What program can I use to turn my 5500 phone into a modem for my laptop?

You just need a Data Cable(3gcables.com) and the drivers which they will provide with the cable. If you already have a cable you can get the drivers here:

thesupplynet.com/drivers.cfm

After installing the drivers, just set up a connection using the phone modem, using #777, and no username or password.

thanks for the reply! it took me about 10 minutes to figure out. so with that number, what exactly am I connecting to? what about charges? I've read other threads and it seems like almost everyone doesn't really know if sprint charges. I typically use it just to check e-mail and surf. No big file downloads here. Let me know if you have any info! Thanks again!

I guess I don't know exactly what you are connecting to. That is a good question. I assume it is just connecting to Sprint's Vision Service somehow. I have been using my phone to connect this way for several months and have not been charged anything. I do have the unlimited vision though.

#777 is the backdoor to the vision network. when you connect like that with your comp, you're turning your phone into a modem and acessing the internet through the vision network, at the same speeds and the same charges. but just be careful, it is considered a breach of contract and if sprint notices a lot of usage, they could audit you and either tack on major charges, or just suspend your subscription. if your just using it a little bit like to check email everyonce in a while then it shouldnt be a real problem.
hope that helps

Can Sprint for sure tell what your usage is when you dial in with #777? I assume so, but don't know.

interesting.......what about speeds? At what connection speed to I configure the modem? All bars are up and I do have good reception.

That's good that you haven't been charged. Do you use it just for e-mail, typical surfing, and not downloading? I also do have the unlimited vision plan.

I connect at 230.4 Kbps, and I do have good reception to get that. I guess the connect speed, the speed it shows you, doesn't mean much. I had one phone that would connect at 115.2 Kbps, and it was obviously slower though, and it stop downloading anything at times. I would have to disconnect and reconnect.

I don't use it for long periods of time, but I do use it for downloading because my dialup out here where I live is terrible. I only connect at 26.4 Kbps, and download speeds are under 3 Kbps. With Sprint I can download at around 15 Kbps. I think Kbps is what flashget is telling me for download speeds, if not that is the number anyway. I actually downloaded XP SP2 Network Installation through Sprint, 263 MB's. I had to pause and recharge my phone twice. I don't just connect and leave it connected, but I don't worry too much about it either. Hope it works good for you.

any other good stuff you can tell me about the 5500, programs, problems, etc? what about address book software? I only purchased the cable and not the software. Any suggestions on where to download similar software?

The only software I have used for it is BitPim, it can trasnfer your contacts and stuff for you. I don't remember where to download it, do a search it is easy to find. If you can't find it, let me know.
