I just want to connect my laptop to my Sanyo 8100 and use it as a modem for brief periods of time. I understand that it should be used carefully to not disturb the Sprint bandwidth gods.

Can I use my existing Future Dial cable to connect my phone to my laptop and use the phone as a modem - or does that cable only work to sync data between the phone and the PC?

Assuming that this works, or if I have to buy a cable from 3G - am I limited to connection via #777 or can I use, for example, the local Yahoo! dial number? From a usage point of view does it make a difference? To me they would just all be minutes off my plan no matter which number I dialed.

I realize that many of these questions may have been asked and answered in other threads but it is difficult to find all the answers in one place.

I just did a search on "8100 Futuredial" (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/search.php?searchid=304291), and there are many posts on this exact subject.

Here is one that should help you.

I use my 8200 for a modem all the time. I have never had them say or do anything to me about the bandwidth I use. I have a unlimited vision plan but I am on line for hours and hours a week. I am online untill my batt on the phone goes dead then I recharge and go some more. I would not worry about the bandwidth gods. I use the Future Dial cable and software. I bought the software for $25 and the gave me the cable for free at Radio Shack. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Once the Futire Dial cable and the drivers are installed you should be able to use the Windows XP dial up software and not have to use the SnapDialer software - is that a correct assumption? (I have SnapSync but not SnapDial.)

Got the point - #777 is the only way to go.

Thanks...

Yes, and it is the same for our cable and driver. You simply use #777 to dail while making a manual dialup connection. You can choose to purchase our cable which is the excact same cable as Futuredial but ours is more than $20 less. BIG price difference.

I would love to buy your cable :hee: - but I already have the Future Dial cable :( . I was looking at that option before I realized that I probably had what I needed.

Thanks for the help - I'll give it a try.

It worked perfectly and the first time! I am not sure if it is stated anywhere but the best way to kick in the hardware wizard is to turn the phone off and then on.

Thanks for all the help.

I wanna pick up the vga1000 sync cable from 3gcables.com. It's ten bucks. Do I need anything, or do I just hook it up to XP and 2000, let them detect adn install, and then dial #777?

Thanks

The cable comes with very detailed instructions that allows you to:

a. install the driver then make a manual dialup connection using #777
b. install the Sprint PCS Connection Manager software and click "connect”

The choice is yours.

Okay, I've got an 8100, an Acer Travelmate 611TXCi, and am about to buy the 3G cable. What about the software, drivers, etc. needed? New to this, but really want to be able to have the ability to get online with my laptop while on the road. (Let's face it, finding things on the cell phone interface scrapes.)

What ELSE do I need? I saw software at the 3G site, but no link to download it.

Anyone else using the 8100 successfully have suggestions? Thanks!

J.
