View Full Version : Removing faceplate on 8200
I have the 4 screws from the 4 corners of the main LCD out and separated the plastic halves using a credit card. But I am not sure how to the the two ends off of the metal hinge.
Does anyone know how to do this?

I too have a Sanyo 8200 that I cracked the outside lcd screen cover on. I bought a new faceplate on ebay, but I haven't received it yet. I am also looking for instructions on how to remove this faceplate. Did you figure it out yet? Also, how did you get to the four screws? Are they under the little rubber pads at the top of the inside display, and under some stickers on the bottom of the inside display?

I think there are screws underneath the silver caps on the hinges.
Groenjester - yes, you needto remove the 2 stickers on the bottom and the two rubber pads on the top.
Jaggrey - I had removed the silver caps, but all I can see is a round metal bar that does not rotate when the phone is opened.
Im still looking to find out how to get the this faceplate off.

The 8200 does not have screws under the silver cap, that cap is the hing/spring assembly. Give me a day or two and I'll post an instructional with pictures on how to remove the front faceplate on an 8200. If you haven't heard from me in a few days email me and remind me.

Hey, that would be AWESOME if you could do an instructional page for us! They are really starting to sell a lot of these facepltes on Ebay. I did notice, however, that they all say you need a Torx 6 T6 screwdriver. Well, from the description of most of the T6 screwdrivers that I have found say that the end looks like a "Star". That's odd, because I removed the stickers on my phone and found that the screws have THREE points. Not five or six. How do I know where to find the correct screwdriver? I even tried Radio Shack, who said that they had the Torx set, but the ends were FIVE pointed. :(

You need a tri-wing tip screw driver, there are some places that sell them online. Try google...

I just bought a Torx 6 T6 screwdriver and a new faceplate for 5300 on Ebay. The T6 is what you need, it has the three points on it. I am not sure about the 8200, but the 5300 faceplate was very easy to replace. I popped out the two rubber pads, and the two plastic pieces. I unscrewed all four screws. Again, not sure how the 8200 is, but I was able to run my fingernail along the seam of the faceplate and that unfastened the faceplate. The rest is just putting the other faceplate on and screwing it in.
Hope this helps.

The 8200 has four screws that hold it into place. Once you get the tool remove the four screws and use a credit card or finger nail to pry the case open(just use something that is not going to damage the case) Start from the bottom and slowly work your way up on both sides of the phone and the case should separate. Their are not hinges or anything tricky on this model of phone. Just be careful with the instrument you use to separte the casing as not to damage the outside of the phone casing.
The tool you need is a tri wing screwdriver. I think it can be also found at some gaming stores as a gameboy adavanced screw driver.
You do not have to mess with the hinge. The top casing is separate from the hinge assembly.
Remember all four screws are hidden and you need to remove the plastic covers to get access to the screws. All four access points are able to be seen when the phone is open.

Well that's odd, because it sure LOOKS like the entire hinge is part off the top cover faceplate. Also, the one that I bought on Ebay (that I don't have yet) looks like it has part of the hinge assembly on it too. I can see that the FRONT of the faceplate will come off and be sepparate, but it sure looks like you have to take off the two silver caps from the hinge and do something to get the top cover to release itself from it.
Have you taken one of these (PM 8200) appart? I am really sorry if I'm wrong, because I haven't tried it yet. I hope it's not too hard to do! :)
Are we going to get that tutorial with photos? ;)
Groenjester
If you look very closely you can follow the point of separation for the two halfs of the faceplate ill try to post pics later

okay once again im here to save the day with taking this great phone apart.
Tools needed:
Tri wing screwdriver (I have the one listed above so i know it works)
Credit card (thanks fubar for this idea works great!)
Pin or Exacto knife (Prefer Exacto Knife)
Dentist Like Pick at a 45 degree angle
Okay, Step One
Take Pin and pop each sticky pad of the face plate up. **Careful these are soft plastic they scar easily and the bottom of them is a silver sticker so any rips in that will show up when put back on**
Step Two
Take Triwing screwdriver and unscrew 4 corners. Keep screws and sticky pads in a safe place. Ive ended up with those sticky pads on my shirt and walked around all day without noticing.
Step Three
Use pin in corner of bottom LCD to lift up the edge slightly. *note not to apply great amount of pressure just slide the pin in a little* Slide credit card all the way around until edges are fully seperated and peal back.
Step Four
Look directly in the middle of the phone under the speaker in the tube area where the phone bends. There is a piece that will completly come off the phone its very noticeable. *right under the right side of the speaker if phone is facing u inside of the phone!*
Step Five
Unscrew the 4 back screws. *two under battery one openly exposed and one above rubber circle under the sticky pad* slowly with credit card peeling these two edges apart. *note this gets trickier with the buttons on the side be careful!*
Step Six
Now here comes the tricky part. To remove the front faceplate from the phone u need to move out the pins that hold the phone together. Find a tool that has a 90 degree angle that you can use to push on and not bend. *I haven't found a practical tool yet to name* Place point of tool between the two white plastic flaps in the tube part of the phone. Push until metal piece comes flying out. *If having problems try bending one of the plastic flaps a little with something and then pushing it out.*
Once you get those two hinges out the whole phone is basically apart. If you can't figure it out from there u shouldn't have taken the whole phone apart anyway haha. but any other questions or tips are welcome to this tutorial!
P.S. Def. post what you used to remove hinges. I use a tool that is sort of what a dentist uses when he picks at ur teeth. its a a 45 degree angle which is perfect for this job. If ya'll want pics I can do that as well just ask.
*******NEVER FORCE ANYTHING APART******
Forcing two pieces of bendable plastic apart causes a high amount of stress on them and will end up breaking or cracking something on the phone. everything I listed here comes apart relatively easy with light pressure. Except the hinges may take a little work to get out.
Have fun everyone

That sucks that you have to take the hinges apart. I know when the Sprint store does a repair they use an assembled hinge and keypad replacement part. They do not take apart and repair the hinges as the part is considered one piece. Sorry for my previous post as I thought they were trying to replace the internal display not external.

its honestly not that hard. just be careful is what im tryin to say. once you do it your a pro and can do it 100 times right

Well the phone does separate into two different units the back casing and front casing. That just involves more work like taking apart the ribbon cables, etc... If you took the whole phone apart it may be easier to get into the sides but than again these projects seem way to hard for the average consumer and the fact it voids the phones warrenty.

Looks like i need to get a new screwdriver too. When i bought the faceplate on ebay, it said you only need a torx T6 screwdriver (which i happened to already have).
Thanks for the intructions. Here are a couple of tips to note... I would remove all the screws first, make sure the pins go back in the correct way, otherwise the hinge will not lock in the correct position.
Here are a couple of more detailed photos.

Hey guys, thanks for the info on the faceplate removal. Now I just have one question before I attempt to replace mine...
I knoticed that both of you said that you took off the BACK or BOTTOM part of the phone (the part with the keypad) If all that I am replacing is the top outside face (with the window and speaker holes), do I have to take the back off of the phone to get at the hinges to remove them? (again, by "back" I mean the bottom half of the phone with the keypad)

Anyone had any experience doing this with a Samsung VGA1000/A620...?
It doesn't look that hard considering the front face isn't wound around the hinge like on the Sanyo...
It doesn't look that hard...
Those look like the only two screws holding it on...

You can see that the Faceplate does not go over the hinge...
You will need to take the back off to remove a plastic cover. This cover is similiar to the one in the 1.jpg photo. Once this piece is off you can get access to the pin.
The hardest part for me was pushing out the pins. I had to take a small flat screwdriver and push the white tabs closer together so they would come out.

you have to remove everything otherwise you wont be able to change the plates. once you take the hinges out of the phone it basically falls apart anyway. actually i just thought of it the true reasoning behind removing the back portion of the phone is because it removes another section of the tube to gain access to the hinges. you will see what i mean when u take it off there will be a little part of the tube that comes with the back right off.

Its the same procedure as well as the 8200 and 4500. I think there aren't faceplates cause they are trying to phase that phone out with the newer and better phones. But it is the same way I just finished painting an 8100 ill have pics of it in a couple days cause I melted the front plastic strip so I need a new one.

Wow. That was rediculously dificult when all i was trying to do was change the faceplate. I got as far as trying to remove the pin to get the hinges apart, and that was it. I couldnt get that pin out without damaging anything so i just f*** it and put all the many pieces back together. Im just glad my phone seems to still work. I really dont think that its worth the trouble and risk of breaking it--just a warning to anyone who might be interested.

I have to say those instructions were perfect. in my case I actually cracked the LCD which bled black stuff everywhere, rendering the screens useless to read text, see who was calling or surf the web.
unclasping the small chips was delicate work but I was able to do so and reuse a LCD froma friends old 8200 that was no longer in service. wasnt sure it would work, I put it together and oila, there was all my old texts etc.

I bought my two faceplates sometime around Oct 04 with the tri-screwdriver from daydeal on ebay and paid over $20 for everything. Well to this day I cannot get my screwdriver to remove one single screw from my phone the screwdriver seems to start eating up and the screw won't budge at all. Not sure why everyone seems to get the screws off so easily but I am having the hardest time ever. But I see I am not the only one who purchased from that person on ebay but still can't seem to change my faceplate. :-( If anyone can help let me know??? THANKS!
