You cannot unlock Sprint phones. You can only activate them with Sprint. You can still use Sprint in Indiana, they do have coverage there.

I've read in other forums about people unlocking their Sprint phones and Verizon activating them with Sprint's ESN, so I guess it's possible. I'm guessing it's really hard though.. You're better off selling your phones here and using the cash to buy phones in India.

Just because you hear it doesn't mean it happened.
Also, nothing is impossible, but it's commonly known that it generally can't be done.
Finally, yes, I know of it happening, but not in this country and that's all I'll say about that.

The topic of unlocking Sprint phones and using them on Verizon's network has been discussed many times on HOFO by respected forum members. Unlocked Sprint phones can be activated on Verizon's network but the features are limited. You can't use the web browser, you can't send pictures or SMS, and you can't install BREW applications on a Sprint phone.
It's true that just because I heard it doesn't mean it happened, but so many respected members have talked about doing it that I choose to believe so.

Yes, I know it can be done, but how many people do you know of that have had it done? Commonly known by word of mouth or people that have had it done first hand? Huge difference in my book.
And exactly what constitutes a 'respected' forum member? I'm not trying to shoot anyone down, but I guess I would just need to know of someone stateside that's had it done.
I know of some people in South America that do it (off the record), but that's another story.

Like Deval said, India is GSM only, per the government ( see http://www.coai.com/telephny.htm )
Since Sprint is CDMA, your phones will not work over there no matter what you do to them.
Sorry.

interesting...everyone i know has GSM there

For what is there, there might as well be none. They are required to be at 800MHz, so as to not interfere with GSM (850 MHz in the country). Of the ones you listed, Only one is active across the entire country, one, isnt active yet, three are spotty at best, and the last has some coverage. You could try to get onto one of the networks, but I would think that you would be paying some serious bucks just to make a single call. It would be much easier just to plink down $25 and buy a cheap, used GSM and bring it over and have it work on the better, high end GSM systems in use there.
Just MHO.

You shouldn't have to unlock them. Here's a list of things that will help you.
#1: Make sure the phones don't currently have service. If their ESN is in Sprint's system, they can't be activated on anyone else's.
#2: Is the carrier that you are wanting to take them to a CDMA carrier? If not, then your phones won't work anyway.
#3. If they are a CDMA network, do they have an open ESN system or a closed one? An open ESN system will accept phones from carriers other than themselves (i.e. - Alltell allows customers to use Verizon phones). A closed ESN system is like Sprint in that they only allow Sprint phones (you can't bring your Verizon or Alltel phone in and activate it on Sprint).
#3. You need the MSL of your phones. If you have a data cable, you can use Bitpim to see your MSL. Search these forums for a forum titled something like "I found out how to read the MSL with a data cable".
#4. Some carriers require that your MSL be all zeros. Verizon requires this because they use over-the-air programming. You may have to change your MSL if that is the case. Searching http://www.howardforums.com will bring up some threads that talk about how to do this.
I hope that helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to post. What you are wanting to do isn't impossible if you are going to an open-ESN CDMA carrier and you have your MSLs for your phones. But it may be more work that it's worth. Check the website of the carrier you are switching to and see how much their phones are. It might be easier to sell yours on here or ebay and buy some new phones there.
What carrier are you going to use over there?

in india, ure gonna be better off using GSM. You can get prepaid sim cards and stuff hella cheap. My uncle was even telling me that with the prepaid, you still get unlimited incoming calls. Just use the old Nokias that everyone used to have

:deal: i work for verizon Customer service - I have actually activated sprint phones under our network - as to the extent of use that the phone will provide the user under our network, I do not know - Sorry that I can not give information on how it is done ( mainly because i don't know how) - all i know is that when it is activated under our network, it is activated under a "dummy" esn, usally as a grandfathered brand name (i.e. Motorola) of the phone they are activating .. very important that the grandfathered phone is listed as a digital phone otherwise it won't work - now this is the part that i'm at a loss - the cust gives me the esn, i don't manipulate the system in anyway on Verizon's side - it just works, of course to anyone that vews the customers acount will not know it is a sprint phone because it is listed as an old verizon phone, and hence will not be taken off the network - but forgett about tech support and warrenty - hope this gives you folks an idea on were to start looking for answers on this particullar question -
