From C/Net:

PalmOne on Monday will release a handheld computer that holds on to data even when the battery runs down, as part of a revamp of its mobile-device line-up. The Tungsten T5, the latest in PalmOne's line of business handhelds, will include nonvolatile memory to make sure the data will not be lost, according to sources. The feature adds flexibility to the $400 gadget, increasing its reliability as a storage device.

And on Oct. 25, PalmOne will continue its highly anticipated product revamp with the introduction of the Treo 650, an update to its smart-phone family that will have a high-resolution screen and a higher-end processor, the sources said.

<snip>
The Treo 650, set for release later this month, will become PalmOne's top-of-the-range smart phone. It will have a case similar to that of its Treo 600 predecessor, but with slightly more rounded edges, and a new keyboard with flatter keys, sources said. It will feature a high-resolution screen of 320 pixels by 320 pixels and a built-in VGA digital camera. Inside, it will have a high-end Intel XScale processor, a removable battery and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

The new smart phone will use PalmSource's Garnet operating system (http://dw.com.com/redir?destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.palmsource.com%2Fpa lmos%2Fgarnet.html&siteId=3&oId=2100-1041-5392842&ontId=1040&lop=nl_ex). PalmOne has said one factor in its decision to use Garnet is its compatibility with the Mac operating system and the community of consumers using it. PalmSource is not expected to create a Mac version of its Palm Desktop for Cobalt--so far, it has developed a Windows version only.

The present top-model Treo 600 will continue to ship but will carry a lower price, PalmOne has said, as part of its effort to create a family of phone devices.

Interesting. I wonder how low the 600's price will go. There are some cool things about the 650, but if the 600 is much less expensive perhaps it will be worth getting the 600 and waiting for a better phone than the 650 (Wi-Fi for example and 64MB Ram, with flash backup and support for the newer higher speed data networks).

Also being able to address the GPS would be nice for mapping applications. I use a Garmin PDA now because my Sanyo 4500 wont calendar sync and I like to have the ability to use routing on the gps when I need to get some where. If my phone couild do this I could be down to one device!

The 650 won't do that.

Just got an email from PalmOne announcing the Tungsten T5.....so I'm assuming that the Treo 650 is "real soon now".....

Release dates are always subjective around here?

Remember, this is PalmOne releasing, not Sprint......but I would imagine the two would be close together.

I would love to see it on October 25... but I'm not going to get my hopes up. The price of the Treo 300 (direct from Sprint) did not drop as much as I would've expected when the Treo 600 was released... so I don't know what to think they will do with the Treo 600 price. The 600 and 650 are much closer together in "value" than the 300 and 600 were back then (IMHO)... so the drop may not be that drastic?

Well thats when Handspring made the Treo I think handsprint alos had a say though on the price cause they also make money from the sales. Now that PalmOne makes the Treo that may be different. Who knows....

This is after rebate. The phone is $600 with $350 rebate. You have to be in our CSA(market) to get this deal though.

I've heard too many false rumors and predictions regarding the successor to the Treo 600, so I don't believe anything until I see it when it comes to PalmOne.

Well I sent a email to sprintpcs:

My Question:

I have the Treo 600 and I would like to get the Treo 650 do you have an
ETA when they will go on sale? if that's true cool and if so will it be on your web site First then you stores? or it will be at the same time ? any info will be nice thanks smile.gif and also what will be the price? will it be the same as the treo 600? about $500?? and will I still be able to use it on the same plan I have now?

And they replyed to me about the treo 650, here's what they had to say:

Thanks for writing to us regarding the new handset from Treo series.

We have not launched the Treo 650 model as of yet. The price can only
be known when we have details for its availability. It will surely be
an improvement over Treo 600. As of now, we plan to launch it by
December, 2004 and not October ending, 2004.

We are rapidly launching new handsets and whenever it is launched, it
will be notified by a high promotional campaign.

When it is launched, you can order the same by calling TeleSales at
1-800-480-4727. They will surely send the handset as soon as possible.

We want to make sure that the handset works fine with the network so
that there are no problems later on. It is better for us as we do not
have to troubleshoot after the launch of handset and better for customer
satisfaction.

Further, you can continue to be on the same basic plan. you will not be
required to change the basic calling plan with the handset.

Thank you for understanding. Have a nice day.

I find it interesting that he said "you can continue to be on the same basic plan. you will not be required to change the basic calling plan with the handset"

I wonder if they are contemplating charging more to use vision? *thinking aloud*

See latgest release information on the Treo 650 at Palminfocenter.com!

Apparently it is going to have a type of flash similar to the T-5 that has been release and a quote the the keyboard; that it will be like a smile allowing larger and flatter keys (hadn't noticed that smile before); Thats good, again the article said next Monday for the release date. Also that it is to out in time for the holiday season. My holiday season starts: Monday the 25th of October. Good luck Sprint Treo users!!! I guess Happy Shopping! And if you buy a new Treo 650; also remember the less fortunate people at Christmas too. Give a gift to the charity of your choice. God Bless!

Treo 650 'Official' Release!?

I have to admit that I am somewhat at a loss to figure out what is going on. InternetNews.com has just posted an article that basically makes the release of the Treo 650 'official' as it is Greg Shirai, director of product marketing for palmOne who is spilling the beans... It's obvious that this was an interview conducted some time last week and prepared for release today. A mistake by InternetNews, an unintended leak or a calculated move by palmOne's PR department?

The whole thing comes as a bit of a shocker as it was very much our impression that palmOne were planning to remain completely mute on the subject of the Treo 650 until its real official release believed to be scheduled for next Monday 25 October (although the InternetNews article may be an indication that this will be done today instead!?). In the article Shirai basically confirms everything that we already knew about the Treo 650:

* Better Camera (1.3MP) + 2x Digital Zoom
* High-res screen
* Bluetooth
* Removable battery
* Keyboard improvements
* Flash memory to ensure that data won't be lost
* Connector changed to match that of the Tungsten line
* New VersaMail to support MS Exchange Server 2003 out of the box
* Blackberry Connect (still not complete but to be added ASAP)

Furthermore, although PalmOne hasn't disclosed which telcos will offer the 650, it will be released in two flavors: a CDMA/1XRTT dual-band radio that can be used over the Verizon and Sprint networks, and a quad-band GSM with EDGE support (is this the EDGE confirmation that we've all been waiting for?), the GPRS protocols used by AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile.

Finally, Shirai said that carriers should announce the availability of the 650 in the next few weeks, with the product actually available before the holiday shopping season.

Read full article at InternetNews and as always you can see our in-depth reporting of the Treo 650 here.

Additionally, a short article in Forbes also mentions that J.P. Morgan "expects palmOne to introduce the Treo 650 on or about Oct. 25" as earlier predicted on Treonauts.

Hey, the first step in the 'recovery process' is admitting that you have an 'addiction'. I came out of the closet years ago - now my wifey accepts who I am. LOL
