Hi,

New here. I tried searching for this subject but did not find anything.

I'm using my 8100 as a modem for my laptop. I'm using a futuredial cable/software and the windows dialer. I've been doing this for almost a year, but I'm having a problem being able to hold onto my connection with the sprint dns servers. I tried entering those numbers as static, but it still loses the connection. I used to use the snap dialer utility from futuredial with the same result.

As long as I'm downloading something or browsing quickly, I have no problem. But, if I have to read or type (like this post). I will have to redial to regain the connection.

As an aside, I JUST found out tonight that this is in violation of the sprint contract so I don't think I will be using this connection as my primary ISP. I did call a vision support person when I started doing this to check if I was billed for data minutes on my plan. I even told them I was using my phone as a modem and they said that I would not be billed extra for the data usage. I guess that was wrong. The support agent tonight asked me to give her my number so she could check if I was going over my transfer limit (apparently 99,999kb/mo), but I told her, 'I don't think so.'

Thanks in advance for your help.

You need to creat a bat file that pings an IP once per second and you will never get disconnected due to inactivity.

would that be the -t option for ping?

Thanks for the help. I wonder if since I am not running a semi-continuous ping request, they havent said anything to me yet. I mean I've downloaded some pretty big files so far (OOo was the largest).

Yes, here is an example of a working bat file. A ping is such a small packet of information it is irrelevant to data usage.

ping www.yahoo.com -t -l 1

Ping is the same for macs, and yes, you can use it in the Terminal. If you're running OS X, then look in /Applications/Utilities and open up Network Utility. There are several items in there that can be utilized - Ping among them.

Hope it works for you! I know how frustrating losing DNS can be.
