What exactly can I do with Sprint and a 650?

I currently have the Samsung a-680 and love it but the new Treo 650 is looking impossible to pass up.

I have same basic noob questions about it, though -

1. Can I browse any website with it?
2. If it has bluetooth, do I still need vision to check email? I'm a little lost on the advantages to bluetooth - can someone fill me in on what this will help me do?
3. I heard something about not being able to text message with the 600 - are there problems with that?

I am a little confused as to how to maximize the 650 with Sprint's service - mainly, what all does bluetooth let me do? Sorry for the noob questions and thank you for your response.

Hi there Tiburon,

1. You can browse many websites with it, but not all. It will not display Flash, and it slightly distorts websites to fit on it's smaller low resolution screen (compared to your computers monitor). Don't get me wrong though, it's definitely usable for browsing 80%+ of the sites on the internet.
2. Bluetooth doesn't replace vision. Vision is basically internet service for your phone from Sprint. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows your phone to connect to other bluetooth devices. So basically if you have a bluetooth module on your computer you could synchronize your data wirelessly. Also some cars now have bluetooth built in, which means that your cars stereo system becomes a sort of wireless headset for you to use. All of your car's speakers become the earpiece and the car has a built in microphone that picks up your voice. Other advantages of bluetooth are that you can wirelessly synch data with other bluetooth devices like other phones and pda's.
3. I've never had a problem sending a text message with my treo 600, so I don't foresee any problems with the treo 650.

there are tons of rumors flying around on the Treo 650/ACE hardware capabilites. One of them is that the bluetooth will be limited to the headset profile (handsfree headset or car kit) only b/c CDMA carriers are worried about the abuse of their highspeed networks. Again these are only rumors and nothing has been officially announced by any carrier yet. The 600 works just fine for txt msg, no need for extra apps or short mail. Where the ACE will really shine is with the new high resolution screen, able to display twice the pixels of the current Treo 600 and 64k colors. The camera has also been enhanced to a 1.3MP so you can get larger (hopefully clearer) pictures.

to highlight the 600, a user can send text msgs (SMS) WHILE on a phone call. Not all phones can do this. Now, this is a good feauture to have. I hope the ACE will follow.

1.Not a substitute for IE. The browser works fine for most basic browsing though.
2. Bluetooth is more popular overseas where u can buy sodas with the cell phone. Its a low power usage wi-fi that's better suited for cell phones and pdas.
3.SMS should work
There's just a lot of great sofrware for chat, news, email, network admin which use the internet capability.

I'm confused. If you have Sprint PCS and a Treo, then why do you want WiFi? The internet is built into the Treo and with Sprint Vision, you get unlimited internet for $15/month. This is much cheaper than any WiFi plan except for the rare "free" hot spots. :confused:

Don't bring up this question on TreoCentral or you will be bombarded with flames. It has been discussed ad nauseum over there. Here are a couple of the main reasons modified to answer your questions:

1) There are a lot of "free" wifi spots. Because you are not using them or are not aware of them does not mean they do not exist.

2) Many people have wifi at their home/office where they are not able to receive a strong Sprint signal.

3) Wifi does not suffer from the latency associated with Vision and/or other 2.5G networks.

4) Vision is not close to even 802.11b in terms of speed.


There are a lot more scenarios in which a wifi connection would be useful. One of which is that around the world, cellular data services as extremely costly. Wifi serves as a stop gap solution.

Initially, I felt the same way you did, but I have begun to see the light.

Well, I just noticed that PalmOne is advertising an 802.11 WiFi SD card for the Treo 650 for $129. Presumably they wouldn't advertise it if they didn't have drivers to make it work... http://www.palmone.com/us/

I already have a PDA with 802.11, and haven't found enough free/low cost WiFi hotspots in the Dallas area to make much use of it outside of home, but for people who live in cities with good public WiFi access, I can see how it would be useful (although then I'd probably make do with my existing PDA / wireless card).

Hmm, looks like you're right. I saw it advertised so prominently right under the ad for the Treo 650, I thought they were advertising it for the Treo. Sorry. :(

With my friends bluetooth phone he is able to remotely control his mp3's on his Apple laptop (play,stop, volume, etc).

Is this software on the mac side that allows one to do this or could the Treo 650 control my music selection on my windows computer, kind of like an ir remote control?

Actually you can use your phone as a modem to get connected to the internet. You just need a cable and a driver and it can be done right on your PC. When I am in the Airport I can use my phone to connect to the internet and get my e-mail on my Laptop. Plus on Vision plan there is no charges for it. You need software like some companies are try to sell. Its a SCAM. I bought a Sanyo cable on E-Bay for $4.00 and it gave the directions on how to get connected.

As for bluetooth all you really can do is get a cool but expensive headset. The inventors of Bluetooth is not yet utilize what use there is for Bluetooth. Its just a wireless chip with longer distance range.

Yup, 640x480 (although a much improved picture compared to the T600 - I have both). The self-portrait 'mirror' is a hack, but at least you can line up your melon before taking the picture.

You wrote a lot of Software files but you did not let us know where how to get them and if its possible to get any of the software for free

I need a program to allow my Palm to play movies.
