That's right. I checked my voicemail and I got a call from 555-555-5555. And the message was playing the Sprint Voicemail Options (ex: Press 8 to call, Press 9 to save, ect..). When I called the number back, it please directory assistances. Weird.

That's the way our county's school phone numbers show up. You call back and it says that the number has been disconnected. The only problem with that is if you have children in different schools, you don't know which school to call or who called. :eyeroll:

Business can place whatever number they want on the outgoing calls. I can set a feature in our switch that sets the number and name people see when I call out. I don't work on cell switches but I am sure it's an option there as well.

Right. When my wife calls me from her desk at work a certain number comes up. If I call that number I get the main switchboard. If I dial a different number I get the phone at her desk.

My sister works at a bank. If she calls me from work, that is the number that shows up. The first time she called me, I thought that it was some kind of joke.

Caller ID Spoofing already?

Actually, I saw Kevin Mitnick on the Screen Savers a while back do this, where he called Leo on his cell phone and the caller ID showed the White House general number.

You know, back when TechTV was good.

So this has been around for a while. What puzzles me is that a business my friend works for has their main number spoofed to 818-555-2525, which is definately not legal.

i don't know about an actual caller id being altered but i do know that if you leave a message of a sprint users phone and when your done press # and 4 it will let you change the callback number for the voicemail message.

a while back, before Verizon took over the local TelCo in Dominican Republic, whenever someone called me from down there it would just show up as +001809 (back when I had T-mobile) and on Sprint the same calls just showed up as unavailable.
The area code down there is 809 and is dialed as a regular US long distance call; from your cell just 809-XXX-XXXX or adding a 1 in front if your market requires it

As sysadmin for my job, one of my roles is administration of our Cisco VOIP system. It is *very* easy to change your external number mask, only takes like 3 seconds and I can change it around as often as I want.

But I don't.

I am guessing a lot of these calls are from simaler systems.

I've gotten a lot of calls from 555-555-5555 and all the voicemails either don't say anything or sounds like whispering.
It's getting annoying. :irked:
