Just letting everyone know - M2Audio is now released. You can stream your Mp3's (and ogg/wma/midi) to almost ANY vision phone...and make ringtones instantly from your music...

WE have finally set everything up - still fixing things here and there, so excuse our mess, however you CAN register on the site.

http://www.m2stream.com/

Because we love the sprint users community, we set up a promocode - use "sprintusers" and get an extra 3 weeks on the trial. We hope you guys enjoy it, and we are always available to help, you can IM me personally on AIM at M2StreamChris if you have any questions or need help getting set up.

Thanks everyone! This program wouldn't be possible without the support from everyone here at sprint users. Have fun with it - and look for M2Security - a webcam monitoring program soon.

Oh - and we just got 2 mm700's in the lab over here and are working on streaming AAC. CD Quality audio anyone??? :)

Screenshot:

If you guys have any suggestions or comments, let me know and I will take care of them personally.

That is great news! This program has been awesome. I might just have to pick up another A700, just for the streaming music, on my secondary line!

If anyone had trouble signing up this morning, we fixed the reg scripts. Thanks for the support guys! After a lot of testing on the mm-A700 yesterday we found a lot of new errors. In the next 2 weeks we will release a MIDP 2.0 compliant client for the newer phones with adjustable AAC support. (You can set the bitrate). Also the Audio Enhancement is broken on some systems. Fixing this also.

I cant login to the forums, it gives me "Sorry, we could not find a member using those log in details.". When I try to run the server (using xp sp2) it gives me an error. I tried putting it in win 98 compatability mode and still get it.

ctnchrisw - You need the Microsoft .Net Framework.
You can download it at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en

Install this and then restart the program.

You may also need MDAC 2.8:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en

That should get you up and running.

Keats - you MAY be able to use this with virtual PC - does it support DirectX? If you need help feel free to message me and we can try some things out.

We do have a guy working right now on a MAC and Linux port of the server ;)

In testing the a700 client we discovered that pop-up dialogs are not being displayed. We have to convert the MIDP 1.0 code over to MIDP 2.0 to take advantage of some of the phone's newer features. M2Audio 2.5 will be released before November with variable bitrate AAC streaming enabled. (No gaps in the song! (unless rebuffering)).

The server can already spit out AAC (as well as mp3) streams, however the clients are only aware of the QCP.

Sprintguy - when did you download the setup? We figured out the problem with the rigntones - looks like the browser rejected URLS with "|" characters in them. Anyway we made a quick switch to use "?" and it worked like a charm. This was done on Wednesday morning. Did you download after Wednesday morning?

eclipxe - Absolutely brilliant piece of work! I'll need to get that extended battery for sure. The only issue I've had so far (haven't tried making ringtones yet) on a VM4050 is an empty page when scrolling through a new set of songs- by pressing "show more".

BTW- Unless you are giving Sprint a share of the revenue, I can't imagine them being too thrilled about this app.........

If you are having ringtone issues then please go to your login at http://login.m2stream.com then go to M2Audio, Download and download the server again and re-send the client to your phone.

We are fiixing other small bugs and releasing a new "patch-installer" that won't require you to rescan ;)

An apaptor should work, but just search for "Kyocera Stereo Headset for Kyocera 7135 Phones" at Amazon. I found them yesterday after a tip from SpineDoc. They are only $10.99! Not sure if the call function (answer/hangup button) will work for the VM4050 though.

I would like to know what the headset issue is (was?) as well. Good luck.

Funny = Sitting at my computer listening to mp3s that are on my computer through my phone, just because i can.

One suggestion to the m2audio people.
Why can't the next song buffer as the current one is playing. I notice that by the time the song gets to the end it's no longer connected to vision, so i assume it's done downloading already... maybe not.

thanks

It would be great to have the next song queued up when another finishes. But this program doesn't buffer like your typical PC media player does though- it loads and serves songs up in 30 second pieces (on my phone there is typically a barely perceptible hiccup every 30 seconds).

I'm really having fun with this program and look forward to future developments. I don't know if M2Audio has Sprint as a paid partner, but hopefully they have Sprints blessing. Otherwise there is a risk Sprint might come down on them for profiting off of their network.

eclipxe
09-10-2004, 08:52 AM
Don't worry about the data download - this program uses less bandwidth than MobiTV and 1KTV (no images).

I guess if you leave it streaming for hours at a time Sprint MIGHT become a bit peeved...but they can tell the difference between vision usage from a phone and from a computer. You pay for unlimited vision right? There is nothing in their terms of service that says you can't use that unlimited vision from the phone...Just not from a laptop or other computer. :)

Sprint does indeed know about our program and we are unable to be listed in the content catalog because we require the server. However - we ARE releasing M2Radio which will be a streaming radio station (with commercial music and independent artists and bands) which most likely WILL be listed in the content catalog next to Mobi and 1kTV.

Have fun streaming!

If Sprint does give any M2Audio users trouble then please let us know and we can take care of it, we have friends at Sprint. Regarding the buffering of the next song - We might implement this feature for AAC on the 2.0 clients, the problem is that on current phones M2Audio is maxing out the CPU and it made the program very buggy when we attempted to pre-cache. A combination of a lack of memory and processing power killed that feature ;(

Sorry!

chris was gonna help me with this yesterday but i think he got busy so maybe you guys can help.

when i get to the "checking configuration" part in the setup it says, "status: unable to connect to m2stream server."

now i am behind a firewall so i forwarded port 4500 like it suggested. still got the same error though.

my belkin router allows me to put the computer in the "DMZ" zone, so i tried this but it still said no connection to server.

all the windows xp firewall stuff is turned off. i do not have any other firewalls running.

any ideas?

Delete it from the music library , but not the actual physical file?
I don't understand what you are trying to do.

Correct, dialup is much too slow, so if you dont' have cable or DSL you may consider the hosted solution. If you think you would be interested in that option, please post in our forums located here: http://www.m2stream.com/community/forum/viewtopic.php?t=395

currently we are gauging whether or not people would be interested in something like this.

We do not officially support dialup, however SEVERAL users have been able to stream just fine with dialup..M2Audio is very light on the connection, only about 1.4kb/sec upload speed is needed for a constant stream.

One thing to make sure to do on a dialup connection is to go to tools then refresh my ip address anytime you re-connect to the dial up and you will be fine. :)

User manual - none yet, however I am working on one. (And the help page!)

As far as not being able to remove songs from the library - I will take a look at that Saturday and release a patch if needed.

And to obendega and anyone else I was unable to assist today, I am truly sorry - got a flat tire after work and I've been stranded in Orange County, far from my main system...

Gotta get my work environment set up in the office out here :)

I'm trying to set up my M2Audio. I'm have a Linksys router, got the port configuration correct, and even had the phone working and it picked out a random song to play, so I know it will work. But, ever since then, whenever I have the program running on my computer and I sign on the M2Audio on my cell phone and I log on, all I get is a screen that has the M2Audio logo and nothing else. My 2 options are "Exit" or "Login" below. Anyone have any ideas? I tried to IM M2audioJoseph last night w/o a reply, he was probably sleeping since it was late. Anyone have any ideas for me?

Try deleting the app from the phone and redownload. Make sure you are typing your username with caps "S"teelers"F"an

Also make sure it is "S"teelers"F"an on the server -> go to options then account settings and re-login there and restart the server.

Everything looks fine on our servers.

I will test out virtual PC under win2k on a G4 PowerMac when the A700 is working. Right now I can't even login.

Also, instead of all this extra work for Mac and Linux, why aren't you guys making this a web service? Doing a JSP/ASP version can't be that hard. Is it because of legal issues?

I will test out virtual PC under win2k on a G4 PowerMac
Responding to my own post. It works under Virtual PC 6 on OS X 10.3.5 using the virtual switch mode. My G4 PM is running at 1.3 Mhz. The host OS on VPC was Win2000.

The network setup was non-trivial to get working. Step by step:

Virtual PC 6 has two networking modes. One is using the host OS connection in a NAT mode. This won't work with M2 Audio because you need a route to the computer over port 4500. So I switched VPC to use virtual switch mode. This mode causes the virtual pc to acquire its own IP from the router.

Second, my network needs a route to a static IP if I am going to allow inbound port mapping. So, I had to set up Win2K using a static IP.

Set up my router to port map incoming port 4500 to the static IP reserved for the VPC host OS.

Add a rule to the built-in OS X firewall to allow inbound connections on port 4500 using the System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall panel. It turns out that this step isn't necessary. VPC bypasses the OS X firewall in virtual switch mode.

At this point, I could set up the M2 Server and have it connect. I was able to add a song to the music library and play it and convert it to a ringtone.

Complete success! Now when you support AAC you will have something--qcp just doesn't cut it :)

This is a very cool program IMO... As easy to install as one could expect, even going so far as to have a walkthrough on how to set up your router/firewall which would be a big help to someone less savvy. Sound quality is ok, good enough for it's use but not good enough to replace my mp3 player.

Speaking of, any updates on when AAC streaming will be supported? I have an A700, so that would definately make a difference in sound quality!

Reasonably priced if one uses it regularly. The program has a huge amount of potential and shows what can really be done with vision without relying on sprint services. I can't wait to stream video from my computer!

Only suggestions I can think of would be the ability to connect your phone to a computer other than yours, so people could theoretically run a master server, like a radio etc. (I don't know the legal implications here but it would be nice). Second would be AAC support, of course. 3rd would be support for .au playlist files for compatability with other comp based mp3 players instead of manually building a new playlist for m2stream. Final suggestion I can think of for now would be to have a link or reference to quality earpieces that can be used in conjunction with the service. I've been looking for a good hands free kit, preferably stereo, for a long time but can't find many solid recommendations! (Something with external call/answer and mute that works with a samsung would be awesome).

Great job! Can't wait to see what comes next.

Sorry for the double post, forgot a couple things and can't edit my old one. :/

2 last things! Hah.

1) Does anyone know if you can set the a700 to not sleep when the screen is flipped down while an application is running? Kinda sucks having to leave my screen open when streaming.

2) On the same vein it'd be awesome if the track info was displayed on the external LCD while closed.

That's it!

Thanks for the review! As far as 1) This is a problem with the a700 - I think the a620 had the same problem and it was later fixed with a firmware update.

2) Sorry - we have no way to access the external screen. It would be awesome however! Sprint just doesn't give us the option...:)

I got mine all working fine, but something has been happening to me lately. I would leave the computer for a while, and when I come back, the screen saver was not working. I guess I was out of memory on the computer maybe? I have 256k RAM. I was always running the M2Audio program and when I exited the program, then things were ok. I think the 256k ram is the problem :)

Just kidding - right click on the taskbar and go to Task Manager. Look at processes and then M2Audio- how much memory is it taking up? If it's over 40 or 50mb then we might have a memory leak... (We've tested and tested to fix all the leaks but maybe we missed one? )

The memory usage for the M2Audio.exe file is only 1,592K. The program works really good, but the audio quality on my 8200 really isn't that good. There's nothing that the M2Audio program can do for that. Is there any external speaker I could plug in that would give me better sound?

I tried m2 for the first time last night and I installed the server on the pc no problem and got the ap downloaded on my phone and it synced up just fine. I didn't have any mp3's on the computer I was working with so I just googled a couple to try out. Once I had them downloaded they played just fine on the pc, but once I tried to play them on the phone it would freeze the ap on the phone and I would have to re-start the ap. Maybe it was just the mp3's I downloaded were bad but they did play in windows media player. However, I did get some of those sample songs that windows media player comes with to play on the phone just fine and it actually sounded really good. But anyways, I have an mp3 collection on another pc, but havn't downloaded mp3's for a long time now. I have been using rhapsody.
So my questions are,
why wouldn't those mp3's play if they played in media player.Windows media player didn't give an error's or anything.

And my second question is it would be cool if you could someone have rhapsody support. I know rhapsody is actually working on something for the phones as we speak, it's called rhapsody 411, but as of right now 411 can't play music, you can only look up artists and what not, so there is really not much use for it right now. But is that something that would be possible, maybe make it so that the server could read the rhapsody playlist as you can export the playlist, so maybe that would be possible and maybe make some kinda macro that would change songs. I really wouldn't want to download all the songs on my rhapsody playlist. Just a thought

Hey, probably a stupid question but I have an A620 and have hooked up mp3 headphones with a 2.5mm adapter as well as a handsfree and the audio only comes out of the phone speaker. I can hear phone calls through the handsfree, but downloaded ringers or the streaming audio only comes through the phone speaker.

Sim-X - Awesome idea regarding Rhapsody, I love Rhapsody personally. We would have to be contacted by Real, and I doubt that would happen as we are competitors :)

As far as some songs not working - if you can send us a link to the songs we can investigate and probably issue a fix in the next release. Thanks!

Did you ever find a new host for the server? I tried connecting last night with no luck. I am behind a firewall (3com cable router), but even with a direct link to my cable modem im still getting errors. All recommended software was installed too. It doesn't seem to be a problem on my side unless comcast is blocking the 4500 port by other means.

I tried the website, and where the list should be, there isn't.

Wow, you guys are awesome!! I haven't gotten the pc software to link to my phone as of yet, but i know it'll be RAD!!!
One quick Q.
I work with 2 computers and was wondering if I could set both to act as servers (not simultaneously). or if there is anyway I could log onto someone elses music library and browse. I know security is a huge issue, but I cannot set up my PC at home right now but I really really want to try this software!!!!
Anyways, I'm sure the future is very bright for you brilliant people!!!
Thank you and good luck!!!

eclipxe
09-17-2004, 01:54 PM
The sound quality is dependant on the phone. We are working hard with the AAC encoder to get it up for a700 and 7400 users (soon). I'll just tell you this - after testing with aac I have decided to sell my iPod.

I have to run out the office right now but I can answer more questions when I get back, thanks guys!

eclipxe, I realize it's a losing proposition using any current cellphones external speaker- decent headphones/headset are really whats needed. But isn't it fair to say using a 1.5Kbps stream (the rate the m2audio server streams to our phones) requires some serious compression that will never seriously be able to compete with CD quality- whether it's streamed in AAC or anything else? 1.5Kbps is just way too low. I mean there are plenty complaining that the iTunes music stores 128Kbps AAC bitrate is too low and below CD quality.

I'm not complaining by any means, your product is amazing. But if streamrates were to double, what kind of audio improvements would there be?

eclipxe
09-20-2004, 10:55 AM
AAC is streaming at 60kbps and because of the low-quality speaker/headset the loss in quality is less dramatic. I mean, a true audiophile will NOT be satisfied with this, however a true audiophile shouldn't be expected to a) stream music b) stream it to a cell phone. I think in the future the technology will be there so we CAN do very high quality streams (EVO-DV) however with the current technology even doing 1.5kb/sec is pushing it. Remeber a few years ago when color screens on cell phones were the big thing? Then cameras? It's amazing how fast the technology is improving and I'm guessing that once we have the 2nd generation of MIDP 2.0 phones the quality of the chipset and data rate will be pretty much comparable to listening to mp3s on a portable player, etc.

So basically cd quality might be an overstatement, however compared to QCP it is like night and day.

Hey, had problems for a while but it's working a little better except that I lose signal a lot. Then I get unable to stream sometimes after that. I went from dialup to broadband recently and I think I got my router set right with port 4500 with my IP. Every now and then it will try and stream a long recording and it will be in fast forward.

One more thing. I like to listen to recordings that may be 1 - 3 hours long. But the caching times out. Any way to increase? Thanks

eclipxe

Jetblue -

Glad it's working a bit better - unable to stream usually means there is an error somewhere between your phone and the tower - what kind of signal do you get? As far as the "fast forwarding" this is due to the Qualcomm encoder which only accepts 8khz audio files - most likely your recordings are stored at 22khz to save space and our decoding process only has routines to convert 44khz audio (the most common). This is something we have attempted to fix, however it causes a huge slowdown in caching (requires up-sampling then downsampling a huge audio file).

As far as the caching timeout - Post the idea on our forums to make it configurable and we can put it into our next feature set. For now you can click on a song to start it caching, then just go back and exit the program for a while (maybe 5-10 minutes), then when you go back in the app try playing the same song/long recording and it should be completely cached :) (It continues in the background)

Thanks!

So basically cd quality might be an overstatement, however compared to QCP it is like night and day.I have downloaded a 2 MB song encoded with AAC at 60 kbps and it sounds very very good on the phone. Not CD quality but it isn't bad at all. The headphone jack is stereo and the stereo separation was awesome. If m2audio encoding is as good as Quicktime then I think that this application is going to be killer with the A700. The only real problems are battery life and the fact that you can't get a phone call while it is in use for streaming.

P.S. This application does work from Virtual PC on a Mac if anyone was wondering. The setup is non-trivial but it works very well from my 1.2 GHz G4.

You know, there was a time when I thought about getting an iPod. Now I think I use the extra 300 bucks I'm going to save and put it into CD's and a good pair of stereo headphones that'll fit into my cell phone.

Eclipxe was awsome enough to let me test out the streaming ACC for the A700 today. Whatever you've read about it, it's true. Well, no, that's a lie. It's better than true. It works, it sounds great, and my money's going to them. The professionalism and quality at this point is something I didn't expect from anything other than some mega-corp or Sprint itself.

These guys are completely dedicated to getting this program to work for you. I actually had live support while testing it out. These guys are doing all they can to make it fit our un-obtainable standards here at SprintUsers. It's still in beta now, but for a beta it's perfect. Bugs, tiny issues, personal preference... yeah, it has it's problems. But you can tell that all these things are just one step away from being checked off the to-do list. Check it out, try it out, and go gloat to some Verizon/Cingular/T-Mobile/Nextel users and show them something they never dreamed of.

Anyway, it's 4am here on the West Coast and after a night of coding, followed by a few cold drinks and more coding I think its time to hit the sack....Saturday will be a busy day but the dev machines will be up and a new install with aac support should be ready. Still no fix for the skips, however we are thinking it is an issue with the Samsung phone...we'll keep everyone posted on how far we can get with that...

Thanks again guys! You guys (and girls) make it all worth it, it's fun for all of us to make something that everyone enjoys using and we are going to continue this with many more cool things you can use to get the most out of that $400 phone and $20/mo vision package you bought :)

Yes 22khz stereo or 44khz mono both will cause the problem. I have found a solution to this (resampling the original) however it slows down caching. There will be an option for this in version 2.3.

Losing signal every 10 seconds - that is very strange , what phone model and what internet connection on your pc?

I've been playing around with the trial version and this looks like such a cool app. Problem is, it sounds crappy and quiet on my Sanyo MM-7400. The new Pod2Mob software seems to make use of the ringer speaker instead of the handset, so it's much louder and sounds great. Since it can be done with Pod2Mob, are there any plans to update M2Audio to work better with the 7400?

The 7400 should sound spot-on -

We are still working on M2Audio 3 and will be offering M2Audio 2 for free in the next few days.

Does anyone know how to get this to work on MM-8300? I can ge the app on my phone fine, and the servers are set up fine. The problem is, the M2Audio app when i click a song to start playing, it plays the first 3 seconds of the song and that is. When I used the M2Audio DX version, it just sits on the word download for ever... Is there anyway to get this to work???? Thanks!

The 8300 has a lot of trouble with streaming over Java (Pod2Mob has the same issue).

Working on a fix for the new version, but haven't been able to test the 8300.

Will update when we have more to show.

Thanks!

Ok thanks, I just think its weird, it play the first 3 seconds, and then I hear nothing else but it still shows that its playing. Pod2Mob works perfectly for me. I cant get Orb 2 work either come to think of it... Other on here say they have gotten it to... Any pointers I can use?

yeah- it's on our side.

A quick explanation: our host (surpass hosting: they suck) decided to delete all of our subdomains randomly. Why? I have no idea. So the dl.m2 subdomain doesn't exist. I just tried to re-add it again. We'll just have to wait until dns propogates through to see if this fixed it. We will be moving over to dreamhost (where the rest of m2-world is) very soon, especially after this.

On another note, we opened up m2audio and made it free to everyone, so once the download issue is fixed, you should be able to use it at no cost :) We also have plans for an entire site redesign and database merge (so your one account will work with all the m2 software) once we move over to our new host

Well I checked just now and not even the website is comming up, so I guess they are having mayor issues, thanks for giving out the names of the companies so we know not to host there. Listen is there anyway you can send me another link through pm or the file through email or something. I would really apreciate it. Thanks.

cool, thanks for those direct links. that sucks about your hosting company, i hope you get it all straightened out soon, cuz you've definitely got a good thing here.. I use pod2mob all the time w/o problems, and i'm pretty well addicted..

p.s. i think we need the JAR file for it to work on the phone..

We didn't intentionally make it not work... it should work for existing users (works for me) when you launch the server or client.
But yes, the main website is down (new users cannot sign up) until we move everything to dreamhost and/or version 3.
I'll keep you guys updated.

Hey Guys -

Sorry about the issues - like Alex said, we're having major hosting problems.

The app SHOULD work on Power Vision phones, however we aren't supporting it officially. 3.0 will be out in the next few months and will work on every phone that 2.5 supported and all newer Power Vision phones. It will be comparable (better, ahem) than Orb's support (and it will work on other carriers than Sprint).

If your desktop server can't connect - try again later on. We've found that at random times of the day we can't hit our own servers. Our move to Dreamhost should fix this issue. Feel free to email me directly (chris.lang@m2stream.com) and I can try my best to help anyone with individual issues.

Thanks guys!
