MID vs PMD ringtones

I found a site that offers a PMD, MID, and MMF version of each ringtone. My Samsung A680 doesn't support the MMF ones but plays PMD and MID. Anyone know the difference between those two and which one do you think I should steer towards?

i honestly thought PMD was an image filetype... I'm really not too sure. Maybe it's image + ringer? I know my phone supports QCP, and Midi (.midi or .mid files). I happen to prefer the midis because in my opinion, they are ALWAYS clearer.

The difference between a midi and, for example, a qcp file can be easily described this way:

Midi files are more like sheet music, they tell the reader (ie the media program, phone. etc) what notes to play, instruments to use, and durations. Midi files will actually sound different from computer to computer because different soundcards use different midi maps (depending on your computer your sound card will have pre-installed... "directions" of how to read the file). The only thing that is really different between the midis though is usually just the instruments being used, because they are stored in the midi files as numbers, I believe, and not all companies use the same instruments to number mappings, but generally they will be in the same instrument group or range. IE a violin possibly sounding more like a viola.

hk0i is completely correct. PMD is a format used for animated images or animated ringers. This format stores separate PNG images and plays the in succession to create an animation. The file can be just an animated image or an animation accompanied by a midi sound file. These can be assigned to a phone phook entry. The midi file format is just the music and hk0i already expained about that. :)

Pmd files are used for ringers on a couple different samsung phones. Yes you can add images to them that show up on your caller id. You can find out how to make them in the files section of http://groups.yahoo.com/group/samsung_pmd_ringer/ . There are also alot of pmd ringers in there also.

And some phones that use pmd for ringers wont let you use them for alarms. But if you change the file extention from pmd to mid, the phone will let you use it for anything.

BTW OP, what web site was that, that offered the pmd ringers?

if you have cmx studio you can also create a pmd animation with a qcp sound, not just midi

Thanks for reviving the thread--I never got it bookmarked :) The part that was not completely correct was that as far as the sound goes, PMD is just a MIDI with an image attached, and if renamed, can be used on a phone that doesn't support PMD extensions.

I make alot of pmd from mp3's that are real voice and/or real songs, not midi's. I can't stand midi's :eek: .

As far as bringing up old treads, I didn't look at the date, just did a google search for "pmd ringtones" and found this forum. Most forums I belong to would rather someone bring up an old tread, than start a new one that covers the same topic. So sorry to offend, sheesh what a grouch.
