View Full Version : Why does it take so long for the PCS phone to ring

opticalc

I get complaints since moving from my N200 to a 8200 that it always takes much longer for me to answer the PCS phone. I did a test when i was at home by calling the pcs phone from my Bellsouth landline, and sure enough, after I heard it start ringing from the Bellsouth line, it took 8 seconds for it to start ringing on the PCS phone!!

*** over? Is this normal.

Yes unfortunately it's a symptom of CDMA technology and the slot cycle thing we have to deal with. This also causes calls going to voicemail without the phone ringing in time.

When you place a call to any wireless phone, the phone gets routed though the router to the provider's network.

Then, the network has to find your phone, what "area" (a.k.a. market, SID, BID, etc..) you're in, then it needs to fin which tower you're using.

Then, it sends the call to the phone, and when the phone "pings" the network (slot cycle as Larry mentioned) your phone will begin to ring.

Sprint probably upped the slot cycle index time so the standby battery time will longer, since the phone is "sleeping" longer.

GSM phones can ring faster because they use a shorter sleep (or slot cycle) time.

In the world of GSM, you have something called Sleep Mode, or more technically, Discontinuous Reception (DRx). The handset can sleep for as little as a couple frames, which is equal to about 1/8th of a second.

DRx2 is 4 checks/sec, and DRx9 is about 1 check a second. Most GSM carriers i know of use DRx2. You cannot really go any further than DRx9, because eventually the phone will lose sync with the GSM framing. It would then have to sync with BCCH everytime it woke up.

CDMA's slot cycles have a very course steps (because its based on 2^n). The most useful slot cycles would be either 2.56s or 5.12 seconds. Others are either too useless or too quick.

IMHO, CDMA slot cycles are poorly designed. A lot can happen between 2.56s and 5.12s. You are given the choice to either double or halve receiver time (which ends up being power consumption), at the expense of doubling or halving the time of being able to receive a call.

If a bit of noise or interference destroys the page for the handset when it finally wakes up after 5.12s, it will sleep another 5.12s before it will even have another chance to pick up it's page. A page could be an incoming call, text message, or even an IP packet via Vision.

I don't really buy the complain that "all GSM handsets have better battery life". Please provide some evidence. I see GSM handsets ranging from 5 days of battery life (a popular motorola handset) to about 14 days of battery life. I see the same range with CDMA phones.

Most talk times are around 200 minutes with both CDMA and GSM.

Here's a random sampling:

GSM
Motorola V300: 6.5 hours talk, 8 days standby
Motorola V66: 3 hours talk, 5 days standby
Nokia 3595: 4.5 hours talk, 13 days standby

CDMA
Sanyo PM-8200: 3.5 talk, 12 days standby (extended batt 5.3 hours talk, 20 days standby)
Samsung A680: 3.2 talk, 9 days standby

Sometimes mine rings within 2 seconds of placing the call, all the way up to 7 seconds...It varries on occasion...

Maokh
08-20-2004, 02:04 PM
That all depends on where you are in the slot cycle.

If the call comes in just before that 5.12 seconds are up, your phone will ring. Likewise, if the slot cycle just started again, it will take up to 5.12 seconds.

If you were 2 seconds away from the slot cycle, missed the page, and had to wait 5.12 seconds to get the page again, it will add up to 7 seconds.

The same applies if you take the bus from point A to point B, and the bus runs every 5.12 minutes. If you just missed the bus, you will wait longer on your journey to point B than if you showed up right when it pulled up to the bus stop.

good analogy with the bus thing. So if I have my MSL code can i manually change the slot cycle timer to 1.28 sec? I realize ill lose battery life but id like to try it.

I heard it won't make any difference if you change that setting because the setting at the tower supercedes any changed made to the phone. Maybe someone else can answer this.

ummmm, i set mine to 1 from 2, then to 3 then back to 2.

slot index cycle is 1-5, if i am not mistaken.

If set to 1 or 3, my phone would give me a message that said "Digital/DATA SV Not Availible" and give the the "uhuhuhuhuhuh" sound.....after returning it back to 2...it went back to normal...It seems as if sprint knows what they are doing, and this is why they have it set to 2....It works nearly flawlessly, with the normal 75% dropped call rate in my apartment....

Hey when I tried changing the slot index cycle, mine was originally set to 2 as well. I changed it to 0 and exited out, the phone then rebooted and when it came back up i was able to make calls out. So then when I called the PCS phone from the landline it worked much quicker! I made 3 test calls and they were all right at 2-3 seconds versus the up to 8 seconds I was seeing.

Thanks for the tip!

Have you filed a trouble ticket with Sprint regarding this? That seems like a very high number of calling failing. What do you mean by an 'out of service' message?

I'm in Orange County and I have two trouble tickets pending right now. I've been getting call backs from Sprint every day including from people right here in the local level. I'm finally convinced that I've convinced them about the calls going to VM problem.

OC here also..I have had so many trouble tickets and know they have tried to work on the problem..the outcome they gave me is that I need to take the battiery out for atleast 2 min a day...witch I think is bull **** since I didnt not have to do that with GSM. I feel liek I am insane and like I am the only one with this problem most of the time.. so congrads that you might have them convinced that there is a problem! cause there is, I think most people just don't care/ use their phone enough to notice it. Give them my name and number and convince them its happening to me too!! lol

Yeah I feel I'm starting to make an impression on them. The key is to keep talking to as many different people at Sprint as possible (not just the cutomer service rep who filed the ticket). And I'm doing that right now. I just talked to a guy based right here in Irvine who was only a mile away from me checking on things. He said he would call me back again in the next couple of days. I"ve also written letters and left them on cell sites in hopes that somebody important would find them. :)

Hi Larry. We communicated before on this subject.

I live in Orange County too by Hewes / Bond. As for my open ticket with Sprint on this subject where about 1/3 of my calls don't ever make it to my phone, Sprint called me back 2 days ago and BS me. They said that another rep checked out my area and all was fine.

I have 4 Sprint phones and sometimes, only 50% of my calls make it from one phone to the other (and visa-versa). Both phones are indentical and same location.

Does anyone know how to modify a VM4050 phone for the Rx thingy?

Joe,

I'm going to send you a PM. There have been some new developments in my case (2 open trouble tickets) in the past couple of days. Let's just say that Sprint is BS'ing me as well. But I'm starting to make some serious waves at Sprint on the local level around here.

Hey Larry and Guys/Gals!

Just wanted to give you an update on calls going into voicemail. It happened again today at 4pm. No ring... just a voicemail alert! No registered "call Missed" or "Incoming Call" in the phone either! This stinks!!!
I too called SPCS after that as I'm sick of it, and transfered over to Technical Issues. A Tech took my issue down and filed a System/Network Trouble Issue on an internal system. I asked about issuing a "ticket" and he said this is better as this will trigger a System Engineer to look into the problem and check out if there are any other complaints on the same issue. I told him there were many. I tried telling him that it appears to be a Nation-Wide issue and I'm in Michigan (N. Metro Detroit Burbs) and I also have the problem at work in Detroit. Friends have experianced the problem in other suburbs and you guys are in California and have the same issue! He said he personally didn't have anyone else report such an issue. Tell your friends if they are encountering this issue to call *2 and try to work their way to Technical Support and issue a complaint. If any of you can figure out who else to make aware of this problem, please post for the rest of us.

Thanks.

I filed two trouble tickets over this which are now closed. One was closed by Sprint and I decided to withdraw the other one for now. For the past 2 weeks I've been talking to Sprint techs/engineers at the local level here in Orange County. The most recent one being yesterday. The man I talked to yesterday was not just an average tech around here. He was a very high level person in the RF dept. and knew details and information about specific towers around here that the average tech would not know. He was surprised at how much I knew about the local towers, PN offsets, pilot pollution, neighbor lists, etc. I even told him which PN offset was picking up at my house and work. At one point he even asked me if I worked for Sprint or in the wireless industry (I don't). LOL But the bottom line is he said they had sent someone out 4 times to the locations (which I know is true) that I filed and they were not able to duplicate the problem. So I decided why beat a dead horse any longer. At least I was able to get them to come out to look into things which was my main goal. I don't have the time or energy to continue to fight this right now so I'll take a few weeks off and see if I want to pursue this some more.

In additional to knowing your location to page/ring your phone, your phone cannot be doing something else. For example, ReadyLink phones update themselves with the servers. So if the phone is in the middle of update (aka using vision), your caller will go into voicemail. So if the calling hears 4 rings before going into voicemail, the system is trying to ring your phone. If the caller goes directly into voicemail, your phone is busy doing some operation which does not allow ringing your phone.
If I see no missed calls on my phone when I get a voicemail icon, I am pretty sure that either my phone was busy or the towers were not able to contact my phone. I have not seen "no ring/voicemail icon" issue unless I have previous lost a signal while traveling (subways, tunnels, etc.). In this case, the towers were attempting to contact my last known location my phone had "registered" unaware that I was in another area. I can deal with 3 or more ring issue because I seen similar issue on other wireless vendors.

Most of us complaining of this problem don't use ReadyLink so that has nothing to do with it. I also always sign out of Vision each time because the network periodically pings the phone when logged in to the web if you don't. Both of these things are usually NOT the cause of most calls going to VM without the phone ringing problems that many of us experiece.

dro1984
08-26-2004, 07:18 PM
Ok... Yes I know I have Ready Link, but I have it turned off. I use Vision all the time, but when I'm done, I turn it off. The calls missed issue is when I've been home for a while and the phone is sitting idle. The problem has gotten so bad, that I've actually noticed and witnessed it in the last couple of weeks. My sister, who has an antique phone (Samsung 3500) has begun to do it too now. Obviously that's not a readylink phone and it's an old 2g phone. Ping time (slot cycle) has not changed on my phone, yet the problem has gotten bad... real bad.

Larry - With all the talking you have done with Sprint. Do you think that it's a problem that can be fixed for the most part?

I have been using my Sprint phone a lot more lately, as my T-Zones was down & I was forwarding my calls to my Sprint phone. And about 75% of my calls are ringing 3 to 4 times then going to VM or they don't ring at all & go to VM. This is all been happening while in SoCal the last 3 weeks, but it was happening in my home area to. It's just so frustrating. :(

From My experience with Cingular over many years, GSM fones ring immediately after I press the last key. Well not immediately but pretty darn fast.

i alsop noticed that when I would call friends on sprint. it would seem to ring 8+ times before it would go to voicemail. I never understood that.

Sometimes its also the ringers themselves. Some ringers, especially homemade ones, take a second or 2 to start ringing versus some of the default ringers. Next time you are in an area where you think your ringing is being held up, try changing the ringer and having someone call you back. I bet it will help a little, maybe even alot.

Joe,

We've talked before about this and I've determined through conversations with Sprint RF people around here that our neighbor list of towers (PN Offsets) is too big here in some places in the City of Orange. So basically what happens is the towers get confused as to which one is supposed to deliver the incoming call to our phones and by the time they decide it's too late because the call has been bounced around too many times between them. The only fix for this is if they add a few more towers so that we can acquire a dominant offset.

slot cycle is fine..its accolc that you can't change
But i have heard if you change slot cycle it does not matter cause thats something the network controls.

From My experience with Cingular over many years, GSM fones ring immediately after I press the last key. Well not immediately but pretty darn fast.

I am so glad to see this thread. I myself miss probably about 75% of my calls due to callers going straight to voice mail or getting a sprint message saying there is no service available. Taking it a step further my text messages are delayed as well. I am scheduled to recieve a text message every morning at 5:15am using Yahoo's sms service. 90% of the time I do not get the text message and when I do it arrives like 10 hours late.

I've taken my phone in to a local store (where it was purchased) and the rep's have updated my software, however we were unable to replicate the problem while I was in the store.

I am so damn frusterated with Sprint right now. My phone is useless at this point. Friends who use sprint as well will come over and visit and they have no issues at all on recieving calls. It's just me.

I live in Spokane, WA and have also had the issue in Seattle, Tacoma and Bremerton. I'm no cell phone techie so I essentially get blown off by sprint reps. I don't believe I should have to hack into my phone to make it function normally. I'm totally clueless on what in the world to do next. Any advice?

Did you have your number ported over from another carrier or did you happen to change your phone number while a Sprint customer?

Yes the network usually overrides any slot cycle change at the handset so there's no benefit for doing that.

Neither. When I left the cricket service and signed up with Sprint I started with a new number. No number changes with sprint after that. Everything worked flawlessly for about a month or so then the missed calls and text messages started.

You might want to call tech support and ask for a phone number reload or account reload (I believe one of those is the correct term for it). Another thing they can do is wipe out your voicemail and give you a new one. (you will lose anything saved). Now I don't know if these things will be of any help but it's worth a try.

If your talking about the vision web, yeah it's neet from what I have played with. But Sllllooooooooooowwwwwww, so slow.

And I never used the web on cingular, so unfortunately I have no frame of reference to compare the two. But even with the low speed I could see it being very convenient at times. Especially the news sites. Definately when we are having all these hurricanes and earthquakes.

I like the web feature, but I hardly ever sms anymore, I can't see myself sending pictures to people and would never use the email feature for a means of contact other than maybe an occasional happy birthday email to avoid the call.

To bad they charge $15 for the vision service. I have a problem paying for it with all the stuff I don't need. Just a nice web package would be nice. But I don't see a base web package on their site.

But yeah,

I'm having the same problem, but with a twist. My phone rings and I get notifications and messages on time while at home. Nothing but problems when I travel. I was in south Florida last month, and my phone would not ring when people called, and I got no messages until I got home, then I got about 25 backed up messages. My voice mails came thru, but the phone never rang. Given the hurricane damage down there, I thought that might be the issue. Since then, I've been to Nashville, TN and had the same problems. Once I landed back in DC and turned on the phone, I got a ton of backed up notifications. Through all this, I'm able to make phone calls. The "Customer Service" at sprint has no idea, and told me to power cycle the phone. Why would this problem only show up when out of my normal calling area in Virginia? Any help, please....

Have you tried calling *18 or *180 (can't remember which one locks out service out of your home area).

Yes, I did this past weekend in TN. Since I wasn't getting any calls, I tried the *180, it didn't help, then I tried the *18. Neither was any help, I called the phone after each time.

I actually got thru to a decent rep thru the business dept. who claims that the source of my problems was that the "out of area" service on my phone was shut off. She said that it had to do with how the account was set up. She claims to have fixed it. I won't know till I l leave town again, but that's ok,since this only happens out of town. She also mentioned that I need to exit out of voice mail, not just hang up the phone, and that should help also. Then to make my day extra special, she gave me PRL 10025. :hee:

I hope it helps.

Yeah it sounds like it was just a matter of your account/phone number being stuck on *18 (no incoming calls out of service area). They should be able to manually fix that. Exiting out of Voicemail doesn't really matter. You can just hang up or push *. Won't make any difference.

This is indeed an ongoing issue. At least 25% of the calls go directly into VM. Sometimes I can call myself repeatedly (Vision off (DDTM off also), full bars, no ReadyLink) and the phone would never ring.

No problem, I am glad I could humor you. I found this thread in a deep dark corner of subscribed threads, after viewing by last post date, this one had the oldest last post date. This gave me reason to breathe new life into it.

The only thing *18 and *180 have ever done is to turn on or off the ability to receive incoming calls while roaming off network. It used to be called the 'follow me roaming' feature or something like that. But it's way outdated now and not necessary to use anymore.

Changing the slot cycle on my Fusic made a HUGE difference. I don't know if the towers will eventually change it back to 2, but on 0, all my calls come though so far. In my basement, incoming calls make it to me maybe 1/4 of the time. Since I put the slot cycle on 0, I get ALL my calls down there. I still can't hold a conversation in the basement, but at least I know when someone is calling and I call back later or run upstairs to talk. Best improvement to the way I use my phone since DDTM (which allowed me to start using the data network).

BTW, on the newer phones, its ##DATA#, older ones don't need the trailing #.

I was told that changing the slot cycle on a phone does nothing as the network will override the phone with the default slot cycle setting.
