Now that a fair amount of people have their hands on this phone, let's open up a thread for tips and tricks. That way, those that don't have this phone yet can advance to "power user" status more quickly, and those that do will hopefully learn something useful.

I'll start:

1. A shortcut to saving phone numbers (it's actually highlighted in the manual, but I wouldn't have found out otherwise): Type in the number you want to save, and simply press the "OK" button, instead of "Options">"Save". Either way, the phone immediately pops up a dialog asking if you want to create a new entry or edit an existing one.

2. Browse channels while watching video clips: When viewing multimedia in the Media Player, press up or down to view other available clips on the current channel.

Any others that you think are useful? Maybe if someone figures out how to download AAC ringers, that could go in here, as well. Have fun with it.

Ok, since everyone is trying to figure out how to download AAC ringers, im gunna help a bit in hopes that someone starts a site hosting them...the file extension for *either* an AAC ringer OR an MP4 ringer is .m4a so all that needs to be done is to create a gcd file with .m4a as the extension of the file. Good luck to the first person that tries this and succeeds. Of course, post here if you do. BTW, there are already over 100 AAC ringers on sprintpcs.com @ $2.50 a pop (2 free a month w/ download credit). I have downloaded a bunch on our demo phone and they sound excellant.

Most GCD Creators wont accept file type .m4a if anyone knows what to define in .htaccess i can work on the site part. i tried AddType aac m4a

i tried this : Content-Type: audio/x-quicktime-movie

I have been working on this. I do not have my samsung to see if the format works, but I have successfully downloaded it incompatibly to my vm4050.

First, if you have access to the .htaccess file edit it and add the line...

"AddType audio/aac .m4a"

Minus quotes of course.

Once you have done that create your aac/m4a file and then create a gcd file for it that looks something similar to....

Content-Type: audio/aac
Content-Name: ringer
Content-Version: 1.0
Content-Vendor: creator
Content-URL: http://www.url.com/ringers/ringer.m4a
Content-Size: 86812

(Note: you don't need a gcd file creator program to create it, you can make your own gcd file in notepad with the above simple text and change the .txt extension to gcd. That is what I do personally.)

Doing that I can tell you the phone will successfully download the file, then it's up to the phone to play it :)

Well, it downloaded fine, and I have it on my phone, but a specifici handler is required to play the m4a file. When I clicked the link to get the handler file, it forwarded me to the Content Manager to purchase Sprint's ringers. So technically, I suppose, the m4a ringers are only compatible with the phone after you buy Sprint's AACs at least once.

Any thoughts? Anyone know what kind of handler we might need?

the only difference when going to properties is the size of course and the sprint downloaded AAC says "Description: AAC Ringer for Samsung A700" so just add that and it will work fine. heh. i wish.

does sprints vision site work with PC wap browsers? maybe you could just like "view source" in a way and see how sprint does it exactly. i'd think then you could see what the file type is exactly and how it gets to the phone maybe. i dont know. hopefully someone figures this out soon.

Replying to myself since I figured it out. The site doesn't have an AAC mime type so the file is coming in as text. I copied it to my personal site and it downloaded without any problem. Just like everyone else, I also get the "No handler" message when I try to play it.

Since I have my website working, I now have the ability to try creating various AAC files in different formats. I will try a bunch to see what happens.

Ok, folks. Here it is. A successful ringer for the A700. Also, it broke the barrier of the file size I have been told, I don't know how big the phone will accept, but this one is 131K. Enjoy, and don't worry about what song I picked for a test, it was random. :p

Ok, here ya go. This is what I have done so far, I haven't played much with different settings. I used dbPowerAmp to convert it with the nero aac codec (both can be found here http://www.dbpoweramp.com . Here are the settings for the file.

48kbps
44.1Khz
Encoder Quality High
Low Complexity

Now, here is the REALLY important part as far as I can tell. Contrary to my previous post, you need to edit the .htaccess file to say:

AddType audio/mp4 .m4a

It MUST say mp4 NOT AAC. (note: you may copy and paste the above direct line as well) once you have done that, just make your gcd file look something like the following:

Content-Type: audio/mp4
Content-Name: Ringer
Content-Version: 1.0
Content-Vendor: author
Content-URL: http://www.url.com/sprintusers/ringers/author.m4a
Content-Size: 134679
Content-Folder: Ringers

You follow those steps, and you should have it. :D

viper685
08-24-2004, 08:49 PM
Also, on another note, the actual size for making your images for the phone is 176x165

Ok, I just made the change to audio/mp4 from audio/aac and it works with the setting I used which was Mono, 16khz, 32kbps, Ecnoding quality of Good, low complexity aac. It worked fine. The anthem example previously posted with is Mono, 22khz also works.

So, the key here is using a mime type of audio/mp4. It looks like the AAC decoder in the phone is smart after that to be able to parse the AAC atoms and playback nearly everything.

I will experiment further to see if there are limits but this looks very very good right now. The sound quality is so far and beyond the .qcp format that it is pretty exciting.

Following up my own post. I just created a very large 30 second AAC and was successful at downloading and playing it. The file size is 241k.

AAC Tests (http://www.thoughtsimple.org/~jdb/gcdtest.html)

The large one is the second link, Jamming. This file is 64 kbits/sec, sample rate of 44.1 kHz in stereo. Encoding quality was Good, and optimized for Low Complexity AAC.

I should also note that this was done in Quicktime on a Mac running OS X 10.3.5.

I think this pretty much proves that the AAC on the Samsung MM-A700 has no real limits in terms of AAC download. This file isn't very practical because it is so large and in stereo but it was trivial to create (much easier than the .qcp format).

Like I said before this is very exciting. Thanks to Viper for figuring out the MIME issue. I was pounding away at different AAC formats to no avail and it never occurred to me that the MIME type might be wrong.

You need to add the following MIME type to your webserver:

text/x-pcs-gcd gcd

How you do that varies depending on the webserver. But the symptom you are describing is exactly what happens when the webserver doesn't know what a .gcd file is--so it just displays the file as text.

If you are using Apache, do a web search for .htaccess. If you are using IIS do a search for adding MIME types to IIS.

Personally, I just added the above line to the apache webserver's mime.types file but it is my server so I can do administrative things that are not possible if you are using a hosted server.

I haven't tried that yet but theoretically the server won't care as long as you add the type to the mime settings:

audio/mp4 m4a

Becomes:

audio/mp4 m4a mp4

Wether or not the phone can deal is a different question.

This is a symptom of the fact that you don't have an aac setting in your mime types. You need to add aac to your mime types just the way you did with the "text/x-pcs-gcd gcd". Add this:

audio/mp4 m4a

ill

My theory seems deficient. I can't make it work but it might just be late and I'm not thinking clearly but for now it looks like you need m4a and not mp4.

Ok, got it to work. The problem is that the extension mp4 is video and not audio. So to make it work you need to add the mime type:

video/mp4 mp4

This was already on my server so the conflicting one in audio/mp4 was a problem. With this video/mp4 mime type in place, change the gcd file:

Cache-Control: no-cache
Content-Type: video/mp4
Content-Name: filename
Content-Version: 1.0
Content-Vendor: jdb
Content-URL: http://www.url.com/filename.mp4
Content-Size: 246903

The key here is the Content-Type is now video/mp4 instead of audio/mp4

This downloads to Other. It looks like it might work for video too. Going to give that a shot next :D

MP4 Video works!!!!!!!!

I downloaded a video and it plays correctly on the phone. Awesome.

Details:

You need the following MIME type on your webserver:

video/mp4 mp4

The GCD file is formatted as follows:

Content-Type: video/mp4
Content-Name: filename
Content-Version: 1.0
Content-Vendor: jdb
Content-URL: http://www.url.com/filename.mp4
Content-Size: 394620

You can see it working here:
MP4 Tests (http://www.thoughtsimple.org/~jdb/gcdtest.html)

The last link is the video. It is big: 385k so be forewarned.

GCD is just a text file with a URL as a pointer to the real file and a MIME type. Read some of the earlier posts in this thread, they describe the contents of a GCD file.

The GCD format is just text and can be made with Windows Notepad if you want. There are various GCD tools available but I haven't researched them since it wasn't necessary for the kinds of experiments I was doing.

Hope this helps.

...how does

Cache-Control: no-cache
Content-Type: video/mp4
...
Content-Size: 246903

in the microsoft wordpad transform the file into gcd??You need to host both files, the file you are interested in sending is linked in the GCD file. They both need to be online. The GCD file is just a text file that the Sprint Vision service uses to find the file you want to download. That is what the "Content-URL: http://www.url.com/filename.MP4" is all about. The Content-Size is also critical. If the size is wrong, you get a 905 error. If the file isn't where you said, you get a 907 error.

TurQ

I should post one more thing before I go to sleep. The SprintPCS Vision web service appears to use a very aggressive caching system. In order to fix problems that arose while I was testing, I had to keep changing the directories where I was hosting the GCD and media files. If I didn't change the directory after a 905 error, I would always get a 905 error even after fixing the problem on my server.

If you are experimenting with this stuff and you get a 905 error, the only way I could get the download to succeed was to change the location of the GCD file on my server. Hope this helps someone avoid a bit of aggravation.

I just tried to get a mp3 file downloaded but I got the same "No Handler" message that we got for the original AAC tests. I'm trying to use the MIME type:

audio/mpeg mp3

The mp3 file was 40kbits/s, mono, non-VBR.

I'm not even sure that the MM-A700 does MP3. Anyone know for sure?

Rumkin is really good, and really bad. At the same time. Heheheh. I use rumkin too because I'm too lazy to write my own. All he really needs to fix though is his folder option when you upload stuff. so like if you upload a midlet it will always go in the Applications folder, or whatever.

Content-Folder: tag needs to be added itno the descriptor file.

I have one in the works right now. A FREE ringtones site with locker and WAP access. No charges, no donations required...100% FREE.

If anyone would like to help the cause, you can email me ringers and I will add them to my database.

Launch date will be around mid-September.

hi i am soooo new to all of this stuff. I am THRILLED with my a700 after getting rid of my treo 600. but i do have a question. all of the instructions to make a aac, or m4p, mp4, or whatever file into a qcp or cmd or something is confushing as heck. I read and attempted about how the guy was able to take an aac file nad put it in his phone, and how he did the same with video, but just looked at it like it was chinese, and scratched my head for a few hours, then got a headache and went for a drink

. I would love to be able to do this, but I don't understand anything of what you hightly versed people are saying... I am soooo sorry for being so ignorant on all of this.

i have over 6000 LEGAL aac files on my mac, and some of them I'd love to have as ringers, but i have no idea how to edit .hsxatms or whatever files, and convert them to qcp or cmp or .ass files (lol joke) then how to get them on my phone. i realize that typing the directions out abeit :"converting aac files for dummies" could be long winded, but i'd be soooo grateful if someone did, you can call my office, i'll call you, whatever, i just want to be as knowledageble as all of you on this forum are... i iknow someone should be able to convert it to me and upload it, but i'd love to know how to do it myself.

teach me....

lol.

let me be your padawan learner... lol

oh and to make it more difficult, i'm on a macintosh. :-)

with access to a PC.

so can anyone help me?

bueller? bueller?

I am not an Apple user, but I asked a co-worker, and he said to do this:

To use iTunes with an mp3 player:

1) Download and run "hymn" on your protected iTunes files (found it here http://hymn-project.org/download.php ). This will generate unprotected versions in the AAC format.

2) Open iTunes (and if necessary, reload the newly converted music files). Select all the files you want to put on your mp3 player and choose Advanced->Convert to mp3 from the menu bar.

3) Locate the converted files (sorted into the iTunes directory structure) and copy them to your mp3 player.

Easy as 1, 2, 3! (Supposedly....you be the judge, since I don't have a MAC!) :D

Well, I think (?) that the GCD file that is downloaded is just the information that tells the phone what and how to download the file you are downloading. So if you can make an AAC into a GCD format, it would work. But I dont know another way of getting any file to your phone (without a working USB cable and software of some kind), other than downloading via Sprints network, which wont accept most other file types, except for the ones they allow. Have you tried sending one directly through http://www.sprintusers.com/focus yet?

umm if you read the thread from the beginning you'll kno that the aac/m4a file is not converted into anythin the gcd file is a pointer file for the phone it instructs the phone what to download and from where.. the gcd is just a text file.. just follow the posts in the thread its explained...now the real trick is gettin the hosting server configured right.. thats explained as well and if you have some background in web sites you'll kno how to configure everythin if not jus ask a friend who is well versed in web site code and they will explain it to you..

On a mac the best way to edit an AAC file is with Quicktime Pro. Pay the $29 and you can edit files using Quicktime Player. It works flawlessly with the A700. Just drag the .m4a file to the player and use the editing commands.

How can you tell it is actually a true acc file and not just an extention?

Are gcd's always aac's?

aac is the actual ringer.. gcd is just a text file that points the phone's browser to where the file is on a server and gives the phone information on the file..

At this time the aac ringers are too new so there is no simple “newbie” way to just go to a site, click the ring-tone, and have it zipped over to your phone. In time they will become more available but for now it is more for the intermediate to advanced users in my opinion.

OK, check it out.. It was hard for me at first too. I'll try to keep this as simple as I can get it. Your phone can only hold certain types of files.. Unfortunately mp3 is not one of them. So, in exchange for mp3, it can hold aac, or m4a(mp4) files. (much like how iPods have aac/m4a music instead of mp3). after thats over with.. there the the "GCD step". OK, a .gcd is not really a file.. its more of an extension so that the sprint phone can find it. as far as "how to convert the files"? Heck, don't ask me, I'm still trying with NO successful attempts. Hope this helps.

Kinetic2k3
08-30-2004, 10:21 AM
to convert an mp3 into AAC/mp4 the tools you need are dp poweramp with nero aac plugin and any sound editing software such as adobe audition or sound forge do a search for these in google.. once you have these installed you can start the conversion

first load the mp3 into your sound editor next simply select the section you would like to clip. then copy and paste that selection into a new wave file. use 44.1 khz stereo 16bit format for the wave file.. now save the wav file.
next load up dbpoweramp with nero aac plugin installed..load the file to be converted adjust the settings so they are this:

48kbps
44.1Khz
Encoder Quality High
Low Complexity

now just hit convert the file will save .mp4 as the extension simply change it to .m4a

all the converting has been now done

now you need to upload the .m4a file to a hosting site so find someone who has access to one if you don't and add this line to the .htaccess file of the hosting server AddType audio/mp4 .m4a

also be sure to add the MIME types to the webserver they are: text/x-pcs-gcd gcd and audio/mp4 m4a ask whoever the admin of the server is to do so they'll know what to do

next you need to create the gcd file..as has been stated before the gcd file is simply a text file.. so simply create a text file.. in that text file paste these fields and edit as necessary

Content-Type: audio/mp4
Content-Name: name of the ringer
Content-Version: 1.0
Content-Vendor: whoever the author is of the file
Content-URL: url of where the .m4a file is uploaded
Content-Size: size of the ringer without commas in bytes

once you have these fields inputted into the file save the file with extension .gcd

now upload this to a hosting site and point the url in your phone's browser or upload the .gcd file to your phone via an upload tool such as Focus.. and thats it.. until someone comes up with a simple upload tool that takes care of the hosting part of the m4a file these are the steps you have to go through to get an AAC ringer on the a700

Mine doesnt at all. It matters what you are doing. Are you saying it gets hot when:

a. You are on a phone call
b. transferring data
c. accessing the web

All of these functions have differnt strains on the processor and battery.

Woah...someone actually figured out how to do this  Thanks OGhugo and everyone else that made this freaking cool thing happen. It sounds pretty darn good on the phone. But I want to be able to upload songs I want. How do I upload my own ringers that fit my likings and everyone elses? I am sorta lost about the whole process but if anyone could repeat it or make it easier.....that would be great!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that posted information on how to get AAC ringers working with the A700, especially Kinetic2k3 for the summary post. It's working great! The only "gotcha" I encountered was an error generated when I had the file size wrong in the GCD file, I had put in the "size on disk" and that's the wrong value.

Now if only someone would start up a site to host AAC ringers for these phones, we'd have a place to pool these files! I'll have tons to contribute in a very short order as I'm going crazy converting my favorite songs over.

Thanks again...

Ok, this thread seems very close to a problem I'm having, and there seems to be lots of people here who know what they're talking about; so hopefully somone can help. I have a site where I host Voice Ringers in the .qcp format, as well as .jpg images.
I've got it set up so that it sends a text notice to your phone and you can download the content much like sprint or 3guploads. It works fine for most phones, but Samsung phones keep getting a "Invaild Descriptor" error. I'm not sure why its just samsung. Odly, I've had someone tell me that when I sent them the QCP file, they used Focus to send it to thier phone, and it works fine; so I know the file format is good.
On my server I have the MIME types defined as
application/java-archive JAR
application/octet-stream *
application/x-pmd pmd
audio/vnd.qcelp qcp
image/jpeg jpg
image/png png
image/vnd.wap.wbmp WBMP
text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor jad

Acutally I host the GCD files and all the files that need special MIME deffs on another site that I get from Digital Sense (http://www.dsensehosting.net/). I just use the Geocites site cause I've had it all set up for a while, and so I have pleanty of room for just ringers and such.

Right click the links I posted and click on properties and copy and paste the URL to AIM by IMing +10000000000 (fill the 0's with your celly) and that should get you the ringer! Just post if you got more questions

Anyone found a way to control the front LED on our a700's? Like change the blinking patterns or turn the blinking off?

Ronkh is correct. SnapSync will work for you with a data cable. We are in stock of both cable and software at www.3gcables.com and yes, the cable comes with the A700 driver.

I just got the A700. I'm loving this phone so far but it could be better if I can do the following: (I tried checking the manual already). Please help if you know how.

1. I want my sub LCD to be lit (or semi lit) at all times.
2. I want to be able to upload pictures from my computer to my phone and use it as a screen saver. Same thing with sounds. BTW, I do have PCS Vision.
3. I'm not able to login to my Ebay account using the web browser.

BTW, I love the voice command on this phone. Hold down "Talk" and find out.

Thanks in advance!

Anyone want some Chinese AAC ringers? I just made some Jay Chou ringers.

FYI: the new Eminem song "Lose It" is now on Deval's site...both a 30 second clip (the chorus) or the FULL 4 minute song (~1mb)...sounds great as a ringer...

Could someone make an AAC ringer out of the barenakedladies song "Another Postcard" (probably using the corus)? If you could make the volume slightly lower than normal that would be great, I've already seen quite a few A700's returned due to the speaker blowing out. It should be loud enough to hear, but not so loud that it crackles the speaker when the ringer volume is at max.

If someone can do this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I didn't see this tip in the thread but, you can make the SAMSUNG blink by starting an upload and when the progress bar starts, close the lid.

Alright... I've been following this thread for a while, and after trying out ill's "Eva", I'm jonesing for some video on this phone.

Ill, what file formats can you take to convert into a video screensaver? Is it possible to cull out from an avi? I have some personal 3d animation I would love to get on my phone, but I don't have a site to host it off of, nor the software required, (I don't think). Is there also a size consideration (as in resolution?) Please let me know... this phone (and what you guys are doing here) rocks! :)

Can someone send ringers to my a700? If someone would do this, would I have to send you the clip in mp3,aac,or m4a?

Careful with this upload tool, it is in beta and it sent a very ugly 5k file to my phone. It was just a screach when I cliked play. I should have been more careful but I didn't pay attention while it downloaded. I admit that I was stressing the tool but given that you can fry your speaker with a bad file, I thought I would give a general warning.

this is what ive been using and my AAC ringtones sound very very very nice. so far ive created and sent about 7 to my phone already. its pretty easy too, i like it cuz now i have a use to all the songs on my computer

and with the free sprint vision trial, im not payin anythin to download these things (cuz theyre huge, like more than 400 kbs which would be 4 bucks without vision, so yeah im gonna load up before my trial ends haha)

i like this site, its really easy and im not much of a person who downloads ringtones, i'd rather download the song on my computer and convert it and send it to my phone.

^ Right, vision gives you free web access and no charge per kilobyte BS. However, there have been other post from some A700 users that claim that they were charged a fee from Sprint because they sent and downloaded a lot of pictures, video's and ringers. However, it is clearly stated on your Multimedia Vision service that everything (save Test Messaging) is unlimited. It should be an easy fight if you do get charged.

how many times do you need to be told this? :eyebrow:

Unlimited Vision means unlimited downloaded data on your phone. Sprint will not charge you anything above the price of vision.

my problem is your ability to annoy. you've been told umpteen times that if you have unlimited vision.....argh, i can't even bring myself to say it anymore.

and i did feel like replying...with the answer that you don't need to keep asking the same question when you've been told the answer

-Awkward Moment-

Um... Well, before we have a Moderator come in here tell us our business...

I love how the MM-A700 will save a Text Message when you exit out of one while typing it. This is handy to me at work when I have to stop what I'm doing for a customer.

Anyone else find some cool stuff about the A700 that belongs under the TIPS AND TRICKS THREAD!!

OK. I just accidently found at trick to allow the sub LCD to stay semi lit. Go to Media Player menu. When the Multimedia menu comes up, close the clamshell and the sub LCD will stay semi lit.

anyone know if u can change the Sub LCD screen to be a downloaded wallpaper?

i know u can make it if your wallpaper is a picture youve taken with your camera, but what about a britney spears wallpaper or somethin. i dont think it works from my experience, but maybe theres a way?

and does the sub lcd always have to be the same as the main lcd?

qwestcell

so far the sub LCD must be the same as the main LCD otherwise it has to be one of the pre-selected ones, i am sure they will add download son the sprintpcs website sometimes for the exterior LCD, but for the moment no way to do what you are asking

Hey Guys/Gals,
I've modified an uploader to accept m4a audio files and mp4 video files. You can find this uploader here (http://www.kivers.com/vision/).
I'll be deleting the files every couple of hours so I don't run out of web space so don't be surprised if your file suddenly goes missing.

Please let me know via PM if you have any problems with the uploader. I'm working on a how-to for making m4a ringers and mp4 videos; it'll be posted on the uploader page when it's done (prob tomorrow).

Enjoy!
