It has been requested a few times for a way to keep the sub lcd lit when the phone is closed and no one has given the answer. One person's suggestion to go to media player does not work. Surely some one out there can figure this out.
In addition any other tricks that the average person can do to the phone. 90% of the talk is about special downloads and most people cannot do or understand. Let's get this topic back to basic secrets and tricks of this fanastic phone
There is no way at all to keep the sub-LCD lit. Sorry.

I will tell you there is no way without hacking the firmware or entering a set of commands into the service menu which no one including a Samsung engineer is going to tell you because it goes against his commitment to his job via intellectual property rights and he could be sued.
So I challenge anyone to make the sub-LCD stay lit.

Hey Guys/Gals,
I've modified an uploader to accept m4a audio files and mp4 video files. You can find this uploader here (http://www.kivers.com/vision/).
I'll be deleting the files every couple of hours so I don't run out of web space so don't be surprised if your file suddenly goes missing.
Please let me know via PM if you have any problems with the uploader. I'm working on a how-to for making m4a ringers and mp4 videos; it'll be posted on the uploader page when it's done (prob tomorrow).
Enjoy!
Kevin, you freakin rule. How much webspace do you have? Because it seems to be a real hassle that you have to manually delete files every so often so that you don't run out of space, so I'm really thankful that you don't mind the inconvenience for us. If you want or need a script for an auto delete feature on the server, let me know, I can whip up something for you.

I have a bunch of web space, so I'm not too worried about it. I setup a cron job to erase the stuff every 24hrs. If it gets too full I'll just have the cron run every 12hrs.
Hope it's working well for all of you.

OPEN CHALLENGE
ok...as i stumble along until 'Creating an MM-A700 Ringer From AAC Files For Dummies' (Mac version) comes out, i have another challenge for you uber geeks. below is a link to Terra Blues in NYC - an exceptional, small, dark blues club. on their first page you are presented with a 16 frame .gif image of two bluesmen at work. this might be simple but i already have a headache - can you convert the image down to A700 size, and still retain the 16 frame animation?
http://www.terrablues.com
i would love to have this animated screen saver. if you can do it, the Sedge will buy you many beers when you make it to NYC and we drown our various sorrows @ Terra Blues.

I had an idea to keep the outer LCD lit all the time. When the phone is opened, a switch triggers the lcd's on. All someone would have to do bypass this switch to trick the phone into thinking its opened, when its really closed. Of course, this would leave both the lcds on all the time. Im not sure how long the battery would last like this...

1.) What kind of luck has everyone had being able to SEND IMs via MSN Mobile Messenger and AIM Mobile using their A700? Have you been able to do so?
2.) Also, can you get the T9 text feature to "learn" new words when used in 3rd party Java apps?
3.) Do you have trouble getting 3rd party Java apps such as Reqwireless' WebViewer and EmailViewer to connect to the Internet?

Not at all as far as IM. From what I have learned from other threads AOL has recently updated its software to work only with two way messaging carriers. Sprint and Nextell are the only ones that will not work now.
As far as T9, I didn't know it would learn words. How would it?

Max,
Thanks for the reply.
Learning new words is a standard feature of T9 text - read more about it here (http://www.t9.com/). BTW, if you don't use T9 text, learn more about it, you can type much faster with your phone once you learn it.
The learning feature works on the built-in apps of my A700, but not with 3rd party Java apps like WebViewer and EmailViewer.

There's a way you can hack into the phone to turn the flash on so that it acts like a flashlight. Memorize these steps... It's a handy bright light for finding things.
First press
47*869#1235
In the test mode press
048
3 turns the light on
2 turns the light off
1 trickles the light
To use your phone again, reboot by pressing
#002 or #045
There are many other commands but I haven't had time to document those. If other members in this forum would, I would appreciate it! :)

>>No problem
One more thing...
My friend has a T-Mobile Samsung E715 and he could turn on his flash just by holding down the up/down button on the side of his phone. He could also take pictures with the clam shell closed by holding down the camera button plus see things on the external display. The A700 arrived later but it lacks alot of these common features. :eyebrow:
Does anyone know if these problems will be addressed in future firmware upgrades?

Cool!! See if you can figure out what test menu item turns off the "noise reduction" that everyone is complaining about on this board. Its the issue when the sound cuts in/out if the person you're talking to is in a noisy environment. SAMSUNG said it is in there, but they wont tell customers how to do it. If you figure it out... Please post it on here. You will make A LOT of people VERY happy!!

I joined up with d-d-n because their mp3 ringtone converter (beta version) worked great for me on my A700. But now that i joined the converter doesn't allow for the user to add a bass filter or decrease the volume of the ringer when sending it to your phone. Now all the ringers sound really really loud (even on normal volume setting). Do you know why they took these features out of the final version? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

Deval,
Remember I asked about my name showing up on the caller ID of land lines? Well, I talked to Sprint and they said some phone companies chose to block the name of cellphones and other companies don't.
I tried to explain to him that some Sprint phones show up on my caller ID with the name and some show up "Cellular Call." So it isn't a "phone company" issue, it is a phone setting. Do you have any idea what else I could try?

I had called Customer Care twice before I posted, then I e-mailed them thrice. (hehe Sorry, I like the word thrice). On the third e-mail they said I would need to call and speak with someone personally. But, in all three of my e-mails, I stated that I had called Customer Care twice.
So today on my break, I called Customer Care again. This time the respresentative knew exactly what I wanted and had it fixed within minutes.
Like you said, I guess the first two representatives I spoke with just didn't understand properly.

This is my first post in this forum so please bear with me. In order to view the full picture in your phone, you must size your screensaver to 176X165 (when you save your pictures to your phone it saves it at 176x165 which is also the lowest rez setting in your camera). Also, in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, when using the crop tool (before you select your crop) the toolbar will have an option to set the width and height. In the width enter 176 px and height to 165 px (it is important to put the "px" in the end because photoshop defaults to inches unless you go to your settings and set pixels as your default). After you do that, use the crop tool and select whatever area you want and it box size will always be the correct aspect ratio. When you hit enter (after you select the area you want to crop) the program will automaticly resize your crop to 176x165. Now you're not done yet, you cannot just save as jpg because it will be bigger than 28k in any setting higher than low quality (any wallpaper larger than 28k will not download into your phone (memory issue?)). You must use the File -> "save to web "option. Select jpg and high setting and it will create a smaller high quality file. From there use the Focus uploader and download to your phone. It will be PERFECT. Sorry for the long winded response, it took me a long time to figure this out.

This won't increase the size of the photo caller id? I'm pretty sure you can't becasue samsung shrunk both the outer and main display photo caller id's. The outter photo id is pretty small and I'm pretty sure even with a full screensaver photo id on the main display doesn't fit the width. It's one of the few things that annoys me on the 700. :(

Sorry,
The method only works for the main screensaver. I gave up on the caller id display and the outer screensaver.

No, it won’t increase the caller ID image but it is perfect for the background "screensaver". Thanks for the tip! I had been having problems making a perfect screensaver until I read your tip =) The funny thing is the aspect ratio does not look like it will fit the whole screen until you send it to the phone. The reason is because the space needed for the header and footer.

last night I thought maybe if I delete a contact name and still have the number and photo caller id in my contacts that the photo caller id would be bigger since there would be no name but it says unnisinged. :( One of things I liked about the 680 was the quality and that it fit the entire screen of the outter display even though you could only assing pictures taken with the phone. Not sure why they shrunk it on the 700.

Last time I checked, snapmedia didn't support the a700. Don't want to waste my money or screw up my phone trying to get it to work. Once it is officially supported, I might purchase it.

hey deval,
A while back I had asked you about helping me out with some questions i had about the d-d-n uploader. I had asked about being able to lower the volume and add a bass filter when sending a ringer to my phone. You helped me out some by adding the bass filter option and I thank you for that. Also about a week ago I had another problem with not being able to send screensavers to my phone and you said you would help me out if i emailed it to you. I emailed it and you said that the problem was fixed, but i'm still having the same problems.
I purchased a month of membership to d-d-n because their beta tool worked great for me and I wanted to support their site. Also because i wanted to see how good their service was before i purchased a long term membership. So far my experience with d-d-n has been "satisfactory". My two main issues that i have are:
1. not being able to lower the volume when sending a ringer to my phone (which i posted on oct.31 and was told that it would be fixed)(this feature was available in the beta version and is not now)
2. not being able to send screensavers to my phone.
My membership with d-d-n expires on 11/29/04 and if I can't get help by that time, then i guess d-d-n just lost a good customer.
I'm not trying to bash d-d-n or deval, I am just telling you my personal experience and also trying to help improve their service by giving them some feedback (hopefully I'll be giving them positive feedback in the future.).

that animation is "simply" a gif, not a video. i used cmx studio to create the pmd. with cmx studio, you add images.. jpg, i dont recall all file types it supports. i dont believe it does support gifs..not as a whole animation anyway. i had to save each frame from the gif then with cmx studio you just add each frame. with the newest cmx, not sure if build 3.1.297 is still the newest, but you can edit how long each frame is displayed. the earlier versions did not allow frames to be displayed for very short of a time. it was all like 1 second a frame so it made the animations look horrible. in the newest version you still can not put whatever you want as the time for each frame, but it does allow a wider range of frame rate...so yeah thats basically it. there is other software out there, i dont know what software there is. i havent even made an animation since eva. maybe that'll help with some of the questions?
I keep getting 404 Errors on alot of the ring tones also i really loved the eva screensaver

don't know if you all knew this, but I was messing around with my personal files at 3Gupload.com and uploaded an MP3, and low and behold it converted it into an m4a (AAC) file. It trimmed it to like ~30 seconds or so, but its still cool. Sounds so much better than QCP on my phone.

how do u adjust the frame rate
ill
01-06-2005, 08:00 PM
man, feel like ive been away forever. to adjust the frame rate there should be 3 windows within the cmx studio. resources properties and layout. you can either change it within the layout after dragging and dropping the images there. within the layout window you click on the image box and make it as small as possible. in the properties window you will see the start time and end time of the image change as you change the size of each image box. or within the properties window you can change the start and end time of each image. it wont allow just any frame rate. i believe the length can be as little as .020

Most GCD Creators wont accept file type .m4a if anyone knows what to define in .htaccess i can work on the site part. i tried AddType aac m4a
i tried this : Content-Type: audio/x-quicktime-movie
I can probably host files. I have a reseller account and lots of bandwidth.
The reason you can't get the GCD files to work is because you need to set your server MIME types to handle file types of this nature. Those who have CPANEL can find the MIME icon in their cpanel.

Remember, the GCD file must have the information about the filesize of the actual file you are downloading. it must be the "Size on Disk" I believe, not the rounded size. Right click on the file and do properties for the Size on Disk

It totally depends what phone you have. Your avatar shows you have a VM4500 but underneath it says A700. You might want to change that so that it does not confuse people who are trying to help.
1) It can be done but I need to know what phone model you have.

Now I tried using that profile (the A620) and I WAS able to pull (via file mode) the photo's and videos. Note I've only run BitPim in read only mode, I haven't attempted to write anything. Trying to access the other sections of BitPim returned errors.

As far as I know what you have done is all that can be done. What are you trying to do that you have not done?

I am trying to clarify what the original poster actually did. He/She may have made a typo and stated 670 and meant 620. Easy enough. But based upon the fact that previous versions of firmware+bitpim have resulted in dead phones  , I'm trying to tread lightly.
I'd like to use this in WRITE mode to upload new apps to the phone. As you might expect, writing to the filesystem leaves a huge opportunity for mucking things up. BTW, has anyone notified any of the developers about the new firmware (apparently) working now? Perhaps they can relax the blacklist code on the A700, or at least put in a firmware check.

As a further follow up...
Filesystem mode works well, but I haven't tried to write yet.
Videos are in 3g2 file format. Apple Quicktime 6.5 will play these back directly (my slightly older version of quicktime did not!). I think Sprint converts them when you use the site to upload them because I know I've viewed them before.
Photos are on there in jpg format. I'm not sure, but it almost seems like Sprint may also filter these slightly, or it just may have been what I had left on there. Quality seems lacking more than I remember from those I downloaded before I shut down Vision after my 2 month freebie expired.
Cudo's to 3G Cables for keeping me in his database and alerting me to the fact the A700 firmware seemed to permit bitpim to function enough to grab the media. I'd highly recommend his service! :tu: :tu:
Next Step is to go after the applications...

I believe there is some talk here about the 3g2 videos and streaming media.
My personal cell phone is the A700 but I have the old firmware version so I haven’t been able to mess with it, not to mention things are completely busy around here. I hope soon to get XL08 so I can too play around. You should have no problems with just reading but writing you do need to be very careful.

Hey there folks, I did typo. I went into settings and used the SCH-A670. I open up the file system and right click the file. I choose the save option and direct it to the file I want it sent to. I am not as technical as others on here like 3G. I just wanted to get my pics and videos off my phone and this seems to work very well. I have tried all the phone types seeing if any of them will work to transfer Outlook. Nothing seems to work, however if you do lock your phone on accident you can switch the phone type back to the SCH-A670 and go to "Data" --> "Get Phone Data" this will reset modem mode. Read the log it will show you what I am talking about.

Thanks for confirming. I've been digging in quite a bit deeper and have hooked up with the BitPIM developers. Hopefully I'll be able to make some progress on getting a new profile developed for the A700.
Using the 620 (no type, 620) profile, I can confirm that (so far) it switches from diagnostics mode to modem mode without issues.

dont know what i did, but when i turn my phone on now, it freezes at the blue sprint screen :-( also, when i plug the charger into it when its off it does the same thing. it will however boot into emergency usb download mode, and emergency uart download mode and the computer will recognize a "Samsung USB Modem" in the device manager (Windows XP), but i cant read or write anything to the phone with any programs, i've tried them all. I NEED FIRMWARE UPGRADE, i think. i have ver. YOU MESSED UP. Why did you use Bitpim when your phone wasn’t supported and it was clear here that you needed firmware XL-08 before even trying?
Also how do you have the phone but are not a Sprint subscriber? Confused…

Furthermore, from what info I was given for the MM-A700 and bitpim, the previous versions of the firmware DID NOT impact the usage as a phone. They only impacted the ability to go back and forth between modem mode and diagnostic (BREW) mode. In other words, if you're not trying to go through the USB cable, you would not see any difference.

Correct, however it could make the phone get stuck in Diagnostic mode which could only be gotten out of by a master reset.

Usually to do a master reset, it's ##MSL. There is some option in almost every phone to do a master reset

#2) I plan on using Vision in the car (along with my carputer), and was wondering if anyone tested Sprint's tolerance as far as MB/GB!! downloaded.
Support said that if you have Vision, Internet is free and unlimited (limited by AUP, of course). How accurate is that ?

#1) The default password is the last 4 digits of your phone number. Not sure on the check mem.
#2) Limited by TOS (terms of service). It is NOT unlimited using the phone with a data cable and yes, they can tell. I have used it for years while traveling but watched my usage. I dont keep a MB tally but I connect, check email (hundreds of emails per day) and browse the basic websites that I need to browse and I have never been shut off. Nobody but Sprint knows the actual threshold value and by no one I mean only very high level people at Sprint Corporate. Nobody at the store level knows that info or it would have been posted here a long time ago and I personally worked in a store and no one there knows for sure.

3G Cables, I see you provide your Drivers with your cables. I am currently using a FufuterDial Driver under WinXP. I ran a speed test and got around 90Kbps from my house. In my care I can get up to 130Kbps.
I remember that ~6 months ago, I came across a different driver that allowed me to get up to 160Kbps. I couldn't conclude if it was the driver or *luck*. Now I can't to any further testing because I can't get a hold of it.
Q: What driver are you all using? 3G Cables, what do you recommend? (don't be shy and post some links :o)

I hate to burst your bubble but the driver has nothing to do with the speed you connect at or transfer at. The driver simply tells the computer and phone how to talk to each other, not how fast they talk to each other. Speed is mostly dependant on signal strength so it makes sense that you got fast speeds in your car where signal is mainly better than anywhere indoors.

Hmm, yeah but:
Listen, I know what driver is and if written correctly, different implementations of the same driver should have the same end result. However, in this case we all know there is little or no friggin` support for this phone (As far as connctivity). The FutureDial driver could be writtien for certain models/technology that may exclude the A700. A lot of phone software refuse to interact with the A700, but have every other Samsung phone in their compatibility list.
My point, if a driver "kinda" works because of similarities in hardware/technology, doesn't mean its the prefect match for it.
Question was, what are you guys using/selling and where can I get a copy? And please don't make me buy one of your cables for a simple driver unless it’s copyrighted 3G Cables.
Thanks for your responsiveness man ... youz good ;)!

A driver is very simple, it gives the translation for the phone and computer to talk to each other. There has never been an instance of a driver EXCLUDING a phone. Certain phones however may need special code to communicate with them but for the majority the same driver is used for most Samsung phones. We use the driver straight from Samsung and Futuredial’s driver at times since we are an authorized Futuredial dealer. I do not wish you to buy one of our cables that is not the purpose at all for this discussion. The fact is that you will not get any faster speed with any particular driver. They will all communicate at the same speed.
The software support is totally different. The software needs to be specifically written to address the phone memory registers for transferring the specific data such as phone number, images, etc. Totally different than the driver communications.
There is not and never will be a specific driver for the A700. That is a fact.

Yeppers, makes sense, I just didn't know the involvment of a cell phone driver.
I was under the impression that the driver would do some work itself and not rely on the software to know where everything is located at (e.g. Screensaver, Phonebooks etc.). I was thinking of it as being similar to a Winmodem driver...that's the closest example I can think of.
Anyways ... that being the case, it woudln't make a difference. I would still love to know where you found the Samsung driver (from Samsung). I already got the FutureDial one.

How do you think you will flash your firmware with a USB cable?
Have you done this before? I would be very careful if I were you.
I used to do it daily for Sprint and it was not with USB cables, it was with serial cables and their proprietary software. You are risking a lot when all you have to do is take it down to your nearest Sprint store with a tech.

That depends what phone you have. There are certain programs which can write to different areas of the phone. The software in the Sprint tech labs can write firmware whereas some other programs can not. Also it is likely you need a serial cable instead of a USB to write to more critical areas of the phone. Most cables in the Sprint tech labs are serial because they address more pins in the phone port needed to write to those areas. You may have some success writing java games with Bitpim but I would be very careful because if you write to the wrong area you will render your phone useless. You can download games and send certain data over the air from this website www.3guplaod.com I know there they have games you can send to your phone which are jar’s.
Can the Data Rate be changed on the A700? Like on older phones,##040793.
Which data rate are you referring to? The data rate of the Vision network is the bottleneck not the phone if that is what you are asking so turning up the data rate on the phone would not change anything.

Guyz great info on this thread! Thanks.
I joined RevGTV.com for free, they have a great mp3, aac, wav to ringtone converter for like every phone and carrier imaginable even Verizon. And it's basically FREE if you pay a one time locker fee. I converted like 250 aac files already.
But, HERE's the thing. Later on i joined MatrixM.com (they got like 200,000 things to send to the phone check em out.) and i found out that i could transfer my RevGTV credits to MatrixM... for free - so why is this interesting?
Here's why!
You only need to pay like 4.99 to have a locker on RevGTV so you can do all the conversions you want unlimited - then MatrixM has this rule that as long as you have a balance you have a free locker on there.
Well... if you have a locker on MatrixM there are over 60,000 free items - most of it is kick ass stuff. But the minimum on MatrixM is about 10 bucks.
By getting the 4.99 on RevGTV and then transferring like 3 bucks to MatrixM you can get all the free stuff on MM AND do all the conversions you want on RevGTV.
It's absolutely the cheapest deal for the least amount of dev i have ever seen. Although i don't think the MatrixM.com people have actually noticed this yet. :D

Actually I remember now. It is not possible to stop that. The bottom menu blocks the bottom part of the image. So to combat the issue I played around with padding "empty space" to the bottom of the image and it finnaly worked. Takes a bit of playing around with.

Why don't all the phone manufacturers just adopt some common standards for phone operating software and let quality, features and performance be the deciding factors?

That’s not it. You are trying to do something that is phone was not designed for (sending third party images over the network as a text message).
And as far as adapting a standard, that is not possible with different hardware specifications including screen size and resolution.
