View Full Version : Weird A680 Ringer volume problem

My A680 just started doing this weird problem. The ringers volume fads in and out while ringing. Sometimes during the ring it sounds as though no sound for a split second. It's so irritating. I took the phone into a Sprint store and had a tech look at it. Like usual they come back saying it's fine. I had them update the firmware but the problem is still there.

Suggestions ?

Maybe going between a strong and weak signal?

thats a feature of the phone. when the flip is open, the phone will ring lower and then increase, that way if you had the phone next to ur ear open, you wouldnt blow your ear out

No, it's not that. I know about that feature. This is different. The ringer is distorted. I would have to show you. I took it into the store today and they agreed. They're sending a warranty replacement. Will that be a refurb ?

How did the Refurb work out for you? Why do they replace with a REfurb anyway you didn't pay for a refurb

I saw your other post and responded there. They replaced the phone with a brand spanking new one. Hopefully this one holds out.

I have missed calls on both my A680 and the work A660 where I either didn't hear the ringer set to 8 and stun on both phones...Both times I was in an area where I was literally under a cell tower waiting for my physical therapy to begin. Another was when I was at Starbuck$ in the morning on the way to work. I only noticed because I remove the phones from my belt and put them on the charger in the car.

this is now a known issue for the A680 thanks to me sending samples in...sprint knows about the ringer problem and is working on a fix...first it plays at odd volumes then the ringer will not work at all...

Over on HoFo, we've been discussing a problem that has cropped up on some of the original A680's. The speaker volume drops out, or else the sound gets garbled and/or staticky. Someone first posted about it a couple weeks ago, and mine started acting up a few days ago while watching MobiTV. It has since done this a couple times while in a call, and also did it a few minutes ago while the phone was ringing.

Popping the battery seemed to relieve the situation for a little while; perhaps a day or two. Anyone else had these issues? FWIW, I'm still running the original software... I didn't get the upgrade yet (XC27?)

My A680 has done this too, and it is my second one. My first one went out right at 30 days so I was able to exchange it out at Best Buy. This second one waited 3 months before it started. Seems like this could turn into a large problem if all the A680 or most of them are like this.

I'm going to switch mine out on Wednesday, my day off.

I had mine in to be serviced and they upgraded the software to (XC27) but that did not help the phones ringer & vibrate feature just died completely. Sprint replaced my defective A680 with a brand spanking new one about 2 weeks ago and it isn't losing it's ring just yet but lost vibrate one day and does weird things with the ringer while your in the menu, settings, sounds, and ringer volume probably have to exchange this one soon too! It's ashame that this phone was supposed to be the upgrade to the "excellent never had no problem with, Samsung A500"
Sprint says they are now aware of this problem, I directed them to the SprintUSERS.com Forum as proof that I was not crazy there is a problem and I am not the only one experiencing this.

you should contact customer service make them aware of the problem they will give you the option of purchasing a new phone over the phone for $299.99 that they will reimburse to you once they receive the defective phone or you can go into one of their big sprint stores where they will order you a new phone from Sprint headquarters (because they can not exchange your phone with their own inventory at the store) which should arrive within 2-3 days.
Spint says they need to work out the kinks of this new phone but
I wish they had done it first before they sold it to us unsuspecting Guinee Pigs

Good Luck to you!

It's called testing. Verizon Wireless does it, and the phones are antiques by the time they hit the market. There seems to be a very short period of time elapsing between FCC approval and product launches with Sprint PCS. There's no way the phones are adequately tested, though it doesn't need to take as long as it does over at VZW.

Mine did that just the other night (it was my second, replaced for the same reason). I was fortunate enough to get to the Sprint Store 30 minutes before they closed, and also very fortunate that they were able to replicate the problem when they checked my ringers, as at the time, the sound was coming in and out and not always cutting out. They promptly replaced my phone with a new one. Well, whether or not it is refurbished, I do not know. I do know that it has the latest firmware (XC27). I hope the updated firmware fixed the ringer issue, but somehow I doubt it did. I am just happy not to have to spend what I did originally to replace this. I am definitely going to shop around for my next phone.

Cheers!

The updated firmware did not fix the ringer issue. In fact it didn't really fix anything important like it should have.

For me they tried updating the firmware and that didn't work so they admitted that it was broken. Plus when I was waiting for my phone to be tested, I overheard a rep tell a customer that the 680 is no longer being sold because it has speaker problems...DOH!

As they like to say, it is "sold out".

I am waiting for them to ship my replacement 680 to the store. I tried to see if another store had one out of chance and the manager told me there that they no longer sell it, so they don't keep it on stock. They didn't tell me it was sold out. It was having major problems, it is no longer being sold. Although I don't see why they have the display model (without the pricetag though) when they aren't even selling it. I'm just hoping they don't get me one that is "almost the same" since they don't sell the 680 anymore.

I am having the same problem with my 680. My original speaker went out so I took it to the Sprint Store and they replaced it with a refurb. The refurb was also broken on the flip part, so I took it back and got another refurb. This refurb also blew the speaker in two days. I took that one back and got another refurb. I have now had that one for less than a week and the ringer is going out again. What do you think that I should do?

Yikes! Sorry that you are having so many problems with your phone kingjuan69. Personally, if my ringer starts going that soon on this new one I got, then I am going to go get a new phone. Probably one of the newer Samsungs, but it is understandable that not everyone can run out and pay for a new phone.

Did sprint find a fix for this problem yet? This is the third phone i received within the past 4 months. The second one went bad within two days and i had to take it back. Will sprint replace this phone with a different model since this one is having so much trouble?

Well I have had this same problem with the ringer not working at all it still vibrates though. Sometimes taking out the battery does reverse the problem. I already spoke to a Cust Svc Rep and they told me I had to bring it in to do some testing the only problem one of the sprint stores close to me no longer has a tech in it. But lately the phone has started ringing again but I know it is only a matter of time before it does it again. I have had mine since last July it started happening back in March.

Try and get them to give you a NEW (not reconditioned) A680. The new hardware version fixes the ringer issues.

This is the first I've heard of a new hardware version for the A680. Are you sure about this? What's the new version?

Your local Sprint tech should be able to give you an ESN range of the new hardware version-ed handsets. Mine was not included, and never blew, always having it on level 7.

I started having the same problems with my 680 2 months ago. I took it to the sprint store. They ordered a brand new 680, which preceeded to drop calls every 10 minutes. And the audio kept going in and out. I took that one back in. After working on the phone for an hour the tech said he would have to order ANOTHER 680. I told him I didn't want another 680. I told him to give me anything of equal value. He stated that strict company policy is to order the same phone. So of course I asked for the manager, who gave me the same line. He told me to relax and not worry because the chance of another new 680 being defective was slim to none. I told him that I had been leaning toward vereizon for some time now and after the events of the past 2 weeks, that I was extremely close to going that way. He gave me one of those "I should call your bluff" kind of looks, before turning to the clerk and telling her to give me a new mm-8300. And I wasn't mad at that decision!! I have you fellas and fellettes to thank for educating me on what has been going on with the 680. I came away with a decent upgrade, and didn't have to raise hell to get it.

I gave up trying with this phone. It seems everytime I set foot in one of the sprint stores closest to me. They never have a tech in that day. I don't mind it as much. Not that many people call me anymore. But I should at least know when my phone rings. I am patiently waiting to see what new phones come out because I am not impressed with what is presently out right now. But you know I wil try and see if I could get a better phone. I am still going to take it to the store and see if I can get if fixed.

My ringer had blown out on my Samsung A680 and I have on going issues that lasted more than a month. I was in the same position and if it wasn't for having the 2 year contract with three lines ($450.00 to cancel) we would have cancelled and gone to Verizon before I even had a chance to contact the BBB. I had to eventually contact the BBB when someone finally called me from Sprint and I got upgraded to a Santo MM8300 like you. Not to bad. Many things about the phone bug me usability wise, but at least it works and doesn't have any known hardware problems.

When I am in the car I have to put my phone in my lap to feel it vibrate or I never know anyone is calling. When you go to choose a ringer they are loud, sometimes very loud, but when the phone actually rings they are very low.

If you are going through Lockline (the accidental warranty) then call them, not Sprint.

For all of you who don't have it and are having the trouble, the only thing you can really do is go to your Sprint Store. Good luck there. My local store has the worst customer service ever. It's worse than actually calling Sprint where half the time the people there have no idea what they are talking about. You may have far better luck than me though.

IMO, Sprint should replace A680's with phones of different models. All these phones do when replaced is just give us (the customers) major headaches. Sprint needs to do "The Right Thing".
