View Full Version : Car Keys locked in car???

is this for real?????
LOCKED OUT? TRY THIS??
This only applies to cars that can be unlocked by that remote button on your
key ring. Should you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home, and you don't have "OnStar," here's your answer to the problem!
If some one has access to the spare remote at your home, call them on your cell phone (or borrow one from someone if the cell phone is locked in the car too!)
Hold your (or anyone's) cell phone about a foot from your car door and have
the other person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the
phone.
Your car will unlock. and it works. Saves someone from having to
drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk, or have the "horn" signal go off, or whatever!)

same here, I fail to see how that would actually work... someone try it to see if it works.

I thought that remote keyless entry systems work with infared. I don't see how it would work either, especially considering my phone doesn't have an infared port and our cell network doens't support it either.

I would put all my $$ (20 bucks and some change) that this will NOT work. Its a radio single, not some sort of tone that is sent to the car. Sounds like the internet has struck again.

If it were a tone, (which is the only way this could work) that would be quit scary, as it would be quite easy for someone to duplicate that tone and be able to get into your locked car.

nope, this wont work. cellphones can only transmit sounds. keyless entry systems dont work on sounds to unlock the car. if it did, you wouldnt be able to unlock your car from inside your house. how do you think your able to unlock your car from inside buildings? you wouldnt be able to if it were based on a certain tone. and plus, if this were true. someone could simply play a wide spectrum of tones to unlock your car and that sounds pretty ridiculous. maybe some really cheap alarms use tone technology or something but no decent or new keyless entry system relys on a tone to open or close your car.

all car horns are in the key of A. Totally un-related, but i thought i'd share.

I about fell out of my chair when I read this. At first I thought the OP was telling us that he came up with this, and for that I was going to call him an idiot. But he asks "is this for real???", so maybe I'll let him slide. Some people just have absolutely NO idea what's going on when it comes to technology. They are so clueless and believe anything. One of two things is going on here. A guy somewhere realizes the world is just filled with idiots and decided to have some fun with them. Or two, they guy that came up with this brilliant idea is just a blatant waste of space.
I can assure you all keyless entry systems work via RF, not infrared like one poster suggested. This is why I tell my dad not to f'ing point his little remote at the car, because it just doesn't help...... ROFL, some people.
Have fun guys.

Far from true: my brother drives a Jeep Cherokee with infrared remote unlocking (factory installed). Jeep is the only manufacturer I know of who has used IR in the last 10 years, but there are many cars on the road today that still use the older IR systems. The IR reciever is located right by the main overhead light in the top of his SUV. If you don't point the remote right into a window, or are otherwise blocked by line of sight, it will not work.
However, as many others have noted, I don't see how this could ever work "over the cell phone." I could see how someone who had no idea how radio waves/wireless communications worked might come up with this idea, but even if it was a sound or tone put out by the remote entry system, it would likely be very changed when compressed and sent over the cellular network.
Here's something random that actually works though: if you have a normal remote unlocker that uses radio frequency (mine is on a Chevy Blazer), you will get much farther range if you hold the remote on the bottom of your chin and use your head as an antenna. I read this on another forum, vwvortex.com, and thought it was fake but it works. Try it next time you walk away from your car and need to lock it. :eyebrow:

It's a habit with pointing the keyless entry to the automobile. maybe because we've gotten into the habit of pointing the remote to the tv???
I still point the keyless entry to the auto out of habit at times.

if this whole thing really did work, in theory i guess you would just be able to start recording on the voice memo of your phone and press the unluck button, then save it and always have it on your phone. too bad it doesnt really work that way.

is that safe? it sounds very wierd to use your head as an antenna :hee:
sending RF through your brains directly trying to make it work as an antenna just doesnt sound safe.... but then again, cell phones arent too safe themselves... so im just a bit lost on whats safe and whats unsafe wireless waves.

Tried the cell phone trick, didn't work :( . I wanted it to worked soooooooooo bad. Maybe because I'm an easily amused 17 year old. I think the chin thing works. I'm gonna try it out in the open next time, no matter how silly I look :D

I can believe it, although I've never tried. Ever had to be a human antenna on a TV? :hee: I wanted the cell thing to work too... but I'm just a silly 17 yr old too.

ill second that. i have a friend who has an early 90s cherokee and it has an IR factory installed in the dome light. so he has to point his remote right at it to unlock it.
as far as the holding the remote to the chin, ive heard that before and it does actually work. granted, its not going to majorly extend your range. but it might help a few feet or so. i tried it with my factory remote and it worked a few extra feet. but i have an aftermarket remote start/keyless and it works about 1/4 mile away, so i dont need to worry about that.

If I'm not mistaken, you can see the wheel of a car about 8 feet from where he's standing when he claims to be "far away".
