View Full Version : Question: Sanyo 8200 verses 8100 (hands on)

I currently have a Sanyo 8100, but hope to upgrade to a Sanyo 8200 as soon as Costco gets some in...
I'm wanting to see several direct comparisons if at all possible (from those who have tested/used both considerably). Several reviews have been posted on the 8200, but strangly enough, I've seen few users stating that they've went from 8100 to 8200 and love it
Reception (I've read that the 8200 gets even worse than the 8100 - is this true?!)
Earpiece/Voice Quality (I've read that 8200 is disappointing - but, is it at least as good as 8100?!)
Redialing Bug (I've read that it's "still" present in 8200 - were there some 8100's that didn't have this problem and is this even true?! I haven't noticed this too much on any of my 3 8100's - only when signal is lost when attempting to call)
Battery Life (specs show 8200's actually lasts longer than 8100 - is there truly a noticeable difference?)
Size/Weight (several users have reported a big difference - but specs don't show too much - is there really a noticeable differnece?!)
Heat! (8100 gets warm/hot... is 8200 even worse, just about the same, or a little cooler?!)
Ringer/Vibrate functionality (8100 only has VB-ringer off, or VB-ringer high... I've read 8200 has both PLUS VB-ringer low - awesome - further comments on this?!)
Call History (I doubt this is true, but I've read that 8200 doesn't keep last 10 dialed calls in call log - only in phone book... Is this true?!)
I appreciate all the feedback in advance... I may ask a few more questions here and there in the course of this thread - but please, any major pluses & minuses between these specific two phones would be GREATLY appreciated :-)

I Have The 8100 And I Would Like To Hear The Same Cause I'm Wondering To Upgrade To The 8200
regulator

There are several reasons why you would NEED to upgrade to the 8200
Speakerphone- This works well in quite environments
Redi-Link- I dont use this feature bc its not big enough
Camera- this is where the 8100 sucks...the 8200 has a camera with flash and 20X zoom
SMS- EVERY phone should have this feature
THE EARPIECE IS HORRIBLE COMPARED TO THE 8100
The 8200 or the 8100 dont get hot or even warm! I dont know why these rumors are out.
call history is just like all the other sanyos
Bottom line, if you like the 8100...keep it. The 8200 is nice, and if you dont need the above mentioned things, then dont spend the money.
Do you ask people why new cars are so much better than old ones before you buy? You do it bc you have the means and want to try something new.

Thank You I'm Gonna Keep My 8100 Cause The Speakerphone Is Good But Really Don't Need It And Ready Link Definetly Won't Use It I Stay With The Pcs And The Camera So Far On The 8100 Works Good For Me Of Course Would It Be Nice The Flash And Zoom But Really Don't Use It Too Much , But Thanks For The Advise Nice Of You.

good choice, the 8100 is going to go down as one of the best phones sprint ever put out.

Thanks for the great feedback so far :-) Anyone else feel the same about 8200 earpiece - horrible in comparison to 8100?
I personally don't care about ReadyLink (Unlimitted PCS-to-PCS is great for me). I'm not sure about SMS - don't use much Web/Messaging, so probably don't care too much... Even the camera doesn't mean too much to me - works fine for quick little memo's & pics, but I'd even be ok without all-together...
BUT, I really do want a speakerphone eventually... I would also REALLY like to have Blue Tooth technology in a Sanyo phone (eventually) for wireless headset without hassles/bases... Perhaps if I hold out another year or so, they'll finally jump on the BT bandwagon.
I'm not too concerned about the cost of a new phone & things... But if earpiece & reception quality must be sacrificed for purchasing an 8200, I'll definitely stick with 8100 for now :D
On a side note, my 3rd 8100 (purchased a little over a month ago) has some definite software improvements over my other two. For reference, I have Software version 1.114SP on my 1st 2, and version 1.115SP on my 3rd... Perhaps the biggest improvement I can see is the abbreviated dialing feature... For my first two 8100's, I enter last 4 digits, then hit ok-ok (if I hit talk, phone would only try calling the 4 digit number - literally - not phone book entry)... But with my 3rd 8100, I can dial last 4 digits, then hit talk and it automatically dials my phone book entry... There are a few other things here and there too (like state caller ID, picture menu differences, etc.). My question is, will it be worth it (risky?) for me to request/install software upgrade on my 1st two 8100's? I remeber in the past, there's sometimes a risk of loosing everything &/or "frying" phone! Any comments/recommendations on this?
Thanks again for the responses. Keep them coming (please)! At present, I'm now planning on keeping my 3 8100's until another Sanyo phone with more pro's comes along. I'm keeping a close eye on the Sanyo 4920, but haven't heard if it's ever planned for a Costco arrival. Circuit City really burned me with performance plan (since they don't carry Sprint anymore), so I'm ONLY considering phones from Costco from now on...

so....what happends if you purchased a CC phone with the warranty? What do they give you if you bring your phone back to them becasue it is working incorrectly?

I believe they send phone out for repare & you eventually receive a refurbed phone - MUCH different than originally disclosed (i.e., originally swap for whatever's new/in-stock & transfer of warrantee)... :furious:
I'm going to request for the remainder (prorated portion) of my $60 warrantee be refunded on each of the two phones purchased through Circuit City... I know I wouldn't be happy with a refurbished replacement if anything "were" to happen to my phones... I'd rather have kept my $120 and took the chance that something wouldn't go wrong with both phones... Oh well - kind-of a sore subject for me... I'm just, um, writing off these first CC phone/warrantee purchases, and never buying another phone or expensive warrantee from them again!
I'm good to go on my 3rd 8100 because I purchased it from Costco :-) Now I'm covered for life on it as long as I'm a current member...
Please keep the feedback coming! There are so many recent 8200 owners on here who appear to be happy. Any of you come from or also own an 8100?
Thanks.

I'd sure like to have some of what you've been smoking. 8100's get HOT if you're talking for more than a few minutes. Mine gets hot enough that it's uncomfortable to hold up to my ear.
What exactly is HORRIBLE about the earpeice?
Can anyone comment on the battery life of the 8200 vs the 8100??

ok, you are right...what do you want me to tell you...I have been on my 8200 charging it and downloading ringers for the past 45 minutes...and it is only warm
Horrible in the fact that its not as loud as the 8100...I have it on full volume and when Im driving, I can barely hear callers.
Battery life is very similar to the 8100.
THEY ASKED FOR COMPARISONS! there are 100 threads about the things you brought up...I gave them SPECIFICS

Oh - thanks for the clarification... I assumed the earpiece was bad - in the sense distorted, not low volume... Sanyo's have always had very loud (most the time, too loud) earpieces! Strange that the 8200 is not loud enough
Any other 8200 verses 8100 comparisons/comments - especially in Reception & Earpiece experiences?

Any further feedback from 8200 owners?!

Thanks.I upgraded from the 8100 to the 8200:
I found the reception the same as the 8100 on my 8200.
As far as the ear piece, it's fine for me. It does get a little bit distorted at higher levels, but honestly, there is no reason why you need it set that high, and if you do, chances are the other person won't be able to hear you.
The camera is at least 100x time better than the 8100, the zoom that everyone talks about is useless, (it only works for lower settings, but the quality is crap at those settings).
I keep my earpiece at one or two on volume and its clear as a bell. I have only jacked it up one time and even then, no problems.
it gets warm while charging but otherwise, no warmer than any other phone with use.

Computer guy,
I too got burned by Circuit City's bogus phone warantee program. Because of that I vowed to NEVER buy anything from Circuit City again. They permanently lost a customer who used to spend about $600 a year there. I cringe when I see that place.
Anyways...I too am waiting for the 8200 to arrive at Costco. The fact that it has a speakerphone is why I want it. I thought about the Toshiba but have heard the speakerphone is not as good. For some reason, I feel a lot of posters on here don't care too much about the speakerphone function and are more worried about screen/internet etc. Like you, I don't really care all that much about those things and am more worried about the phone capabilities. Speaker phone is a really big deal for me and the fact that it has a nice camera is bonus. I can't imagine the sound quality can be that bad. At least I'm not convinced it is so bad that I shouldn't get it once Costco gets it. But, that is speaking from a hunch, not experience.
As for waiting for a "better" phone to come out.... I have been in that same boat for 2 years now. Because of Crappy City I have had a Kyocera 2255 with a dead screen for over a year now. I keep waiting for something better than current offerings but am always disappointed. These tech companies seem to push out new products with just enough "new" features to entice new customers. I've been waiting for a company to introduce the "perfect" phone for too long. That's why I will be getting the 8200. If not for the speakerphone and camera, then my impatience.

I had the 8100 for about a year and it was the best phone I ever had from Sprint. I called it the "tank" due to it's durability and reliability--not to mention because of its build.
I upgraded to the 8200 about a month ago and I've had no problems at all with it, and I'm glad I got it. All the additional features (mentioned in various other threads here) made the move from the 8100 to the 8200 worth it--to me, at least. I like having a better camera, true sms, and speaker phone (I don't really have conversations using the speakerphone, but it's nice when you've got a few voicemails and can just set the phone down and listen to them).
If you liked the 8100, I think you'll be very happy with the 8200.

This is from another person that got burned by the CC change. When you ask for the refund they will say ok, no problem. This is because they will take an 'administrative fee' out of the refund before they send you the check. THEY changed the coverage but because YOU canceled it, they get a fee. No matter what, you lose they win (the battle. I won the war since I will not be spending ANY future dollars there.)

Thank you all for the great feedback. Now I'm back to considering the 8200 again! I guess I'll have nothing to lose if I don't like the change - can always take it back...
As far as speakerphone - like others, that's my absolute #1 reason for wanting this swap (the remaining pro's are just perks). I'll primarilly use speakerphone for checking VM & quick 1 minute conversations... But it'll definitely be nice just to have one...
As far as volume, I ALWAYS leave my 8100 on lowest possible volume - always... Therefore, I anticipate leaving a new 8200 on no more than the 1st two lowest settings... With this in mind, are you 8200 owners satisfied with these lowest levels? Do you think the lowest of 8100 is comparable to lowest of 8200?
Any further comments on reception of 8200? I am almost always in well covered areas, but buildings & garages frequently cause very low signal strength... Will this be an issue with new 8200? Low 8100 signal strength = no 8200 signal strength?!
Thanks again for great responses :)

I've found the signal strength to about the same with both. I am, however, in a pretty decent area regardless of any Sprint phone. So, my opinion on this may not be a great help to you. Hell, you got 14 days with it. Check it out for a week or so, and see what you think. Like you said, you can always go back. Your biggest decision at this point might be which color you want. :hee:

I switched from 8100 to 8200 as soon as the 82 came out and couldn't be happier... i loved the 81 and all it was and love the 82 just as much... the vision is faster, sms is nice to have but shortmail never bothered me, more memory for ringers/games/pictures... reception-wise i find the 8200 quite different from the 8100, both better in some areas and not quite as good in others... volume is similar to the 8100 in my experience, keep it low and its fine, the 8200 can get a little muffled if it's up high...
the 8200 is a great phone... a huge step up from the 8100 IMHO...
since you arent sure you need the camera have you considered the 7300? seems to be the same phone without the cam for the most part... plus, have you considered updating the software in your 8100's?
So how many of you have been using lockline to "upgrade"? ;)

I've had my 8100 for over a year and NOT ONCE has my phone ever gotten hot. Barely warm, even. And I talk on my phone all the time! (2000 min. plan) I must be lucky I guess. The only gripe I've had is the battery life is so-so, other than that, I've been very pleased with my sanyo.

I Do Have My Sanyo 8100 Over A Year And It Gets Warm When You Talk For A Long Time But Not That Hot That You Can't Hold It, About The Battery I Just Recently Bought The Extended Battery In The Flea Market For 18.00 And Works Perfect Better Than The Reg. Now The Reg. I Use It As A Back Up But Never Have To Use It Cause The Extended Holds Pretty Good Like 3 Days Without Charging

I have noticed it myself, that when you are charging and using the phone simultaneously, yes the phone gets hot. however, when it is not charging it doesn't getting hot, I know it, coz I am a phone heavyu user, There are several reasons why you would NEED to upgrade to the 8200
Speakerphone- This works well in quite environments

OK - that's it... Best of luck to fellow SprintUsers  I asked specific questions on my last "Couple 8100 verses 8200 ?'s" thread that WAS DIFFERENT & MORE SPECIFIC than this thread...
Since few responses were received on my last message, and since Moderators wanted to close thread (and failed to add my new questions/posting to this original thread), I can see I'm headed down a dead-end street.
This was good while it lasted, but I see this will likely be my last posting... I will retreat back to my "guest" status & get what I need just by reading/researching...

My 2 cents: I love the sound quality of my 8200, calls come in loud and clear, the speakerphone is very useful while driving as I don't have to open the phone with voice dial enabled.
It does get a little warm after about 20 minutes of talkiing, this could be the heat from my hand,.
Like the size and weight, battery life is similar to the 8100, hope is as rugged as the 8100 which survived a swim in a bowl of soup and several falls from 2-3 feet to tiled floors. Overall I am very happy with the 8200.

I started out wth the 8100, and loved it. When the 8200 came out I really wanted to upgrade. So i asked around about the 8200 and only heard alot of negative feed back. Sound quality (ect). Its not true, I love the 8200 i have worked for a few cellular dealers and for the most part the 8200 is one of the best phones i have ever owned. I really recamend this phone its has smooth operations and great ringer quality. And its nice having true a signal unlike the 8100. For all and all its a must have.

Not a rumor. I can nearly make a hot pocket on mine after about 10 min of use. :p
It is most uncomfortable during hot weather, and you're pressing a hot phone against your face. This feature will rock during winter however.. :D

Okay, to answer all your questions since I have both phones:
1) the reception is the same (slightly better in some environments) the only thing is that they re-calibrated the meter (shows less bars, still same reception)
2) Earpiece is an 8 out of 10, quality 8 out of 10,
3) Never had the re-dailing bug on either my 8100 or the 8200
4) Battery life is a solid 10 days for me with readylink off, if you have readylink on battery life is lower (down to 6 days for me)
5) Smaller and Lighter, you can tell if the phones are side by side
6) i dont notice it getting hot, definately cooler than the 8100
7) The Vibrate + Hi / Low ringer is great, also has a beep function where the phone beeps and / or vibrates if soemoen calls
8) Call Logs are acceable from the menu
if you still need to buy this phone I have one for sale.
I hope this answers all your questions

I have owned both the 8100 and the 8200...
Reception - the 8100 is better
earpiece/voice quailty - I thought the 8100 was better, louder, and clearer.
redialing bug - i didn't experience with the 8200 i had
battery life - is about the same, i didn't notice any difference
the 8200 is thinner, and wider than the 8100
Heat - about the same
Ringer/Vib - The 8200 does have vib+low. I thought the 8100 is louder (on level 4) than the 8200 (on level 4)
call log - the 8200 keeps the dialed numbers
Is this true?!)

for those compalining about hot phones, are you using original batteries or ebay ones. it is absolutely normal for cell phones to get hot while in use because you are holding it in your warm hand and because its in use. if its burning you then something is wrong with it.

I have had my 8200 for about 4 months and am going to return it (thank god I can do this at Costco!) becuase the handset connection has broken, and the connection for charging it is spotty at best. The sound quality is not great, the camera is very limited and a gimick on any of these phones, and the phone gets very hot when used for a while. I don't really know what's out there to get instead though...

I just upgraded my plan and replaced my 8100 with a 8200, or at least I hope that I will be using the 8200. I started a thread concerning the signal strength of the 8200 as I believe it is considerably worst than the 8100.
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=514610#post514610
As far as all the other features and questions you had... I like the 8200 much more than the 8100, it's just that in my case I need the stronger signal strength that I was getting with the 8100. Right now my 8200 is at the Sprint store to be checked by their tech to make sure I don't have a lemon. When the results are determined I'll update my thread.
Another thing I have noticed about the 8200 vs the 8100 is that the 8200 doesn't seem to be as 'solid' as the 8100. I've beat my 8100 to death (just about everything imaginable except droping in the tolet and running over with a semi) and the phone still works fine, none of the hinges feel loose, and all the buttons are still working. I'm concerned about the 8200 after I accidently drop and kick it a few times.... :-)

I am still in love with my 8100, but I am sorely disappointed in the body of it. I had it for 18 months to the day of my upgrade availability and it fell out of my pocket (raggedy ass clip) enclosed in a leather case, on to a carpet, about 2 ft. and the antenna tip broke as well as the hinge. It still works but it looks like crap now when it's open. It is hanging on by that one hinge and now I have no choice but to upgrade.
I just don't like my options, because I bought that phone because that's what I wanted. Oh well, I wanted and 8200 but I noticed that even on low volume I can still hear people on the other end. I don't like that a conversation should be private not privey to all.

Okay, where at? Cause the dipturds at the Sprint store said they couldn't do it. Because it's white/lavender and they didn't have any, oh yeah, I don't have insurance either. Would that matter?

so....what happends if you purchased a CC phone with the warranty? What do they give you if you bring your phone back to them becasue it is working incorrectly?
Circuit City was, as of last spring (long after they dropped Sprint) shipping only new handsets. They used Lockline to handle the warehousing and shipping of the handsets, but the phones were handled by Circuit City. I've had something like eight replacements. They have never made me bring a phone to a tech. They always had me keep all of the accessories (batteries, charger, manual) and ship only the handset itself. The only downside post-Sprint is that they don't swap the phone in the store, because they don't carry them.

Well, the 8100 was one of the most solid phones that sprint put out there. It could take a beating, had good reception, and was pretty much bug free.
So in terms of solidness, the 8100 is better. In terms of features (camera, SMS, vision speed, speaker phone) its the 8200.
I'm really interested in what might be on the 8300.

As an addendum to my previous post: Don't bring the phone to them. Call 1-888-333-2333 from a phone other than the one having the issue. I've had them ask me to remove the battery and replace or power cycle the phone.

Joined this because of all the trouble with the earpiece on my 8200, it sucks! It worked perfect for 3 months then got a "short" in it so you have to hold the connector in just the right place or it disconnects...then reconnects...big problem if your phone is closed cuz you'll cut someone off. The Sprint store will gladly swap it out, but one problem, no RED. Can't get one anywhere and they've discontinued it. I verified with mamaSprint and other stores, so I'm SOL. Problem here is I really like the phone, only want a red one, only had it for 3 months, and I find this totally unacceptable. Would gladly take a MM7400, cuz it's red, but they're not budging. After reading past posts I see other people have had headset problems and this seems totally model related. Hey, I'd pay to fix the short so I can use the headset again. (once I got the Plantronics headset I never put the phone to my ear...even when not driving;)
Anyone got suggestions on who could fix this or should I beat down the manager for the 7400? Can you tell me there aren't any red 8200's anywhere I can swap out for?
PS Don't call me names for sticking to the color...just ain't a silver girl and that's the only color left.. but mainly feel if I buy something that I like I should get what I want.

thanks (I noted that in my post)...what I would like to do is get one from a Sprint store that's still stocked with one...still dreaming.
I still believe the squeaky wheel gets the oil...and I'll pay the diff to get a MM7400. Guess I'll have to visit the store everyday and see if they'll just give it to me to shut me up.
What cracks me up is they wanted to give me the MM5600 but not the MM7400. What's the deal with that?
And is the anyone who fixes hardware and can swap out the connector in the phone?
Thanks for letting me vent and thanks again for the reply!
they wanted to give you the 5600 but not the 7400!? omg! well thats sprint for you, maybe you should have initially asked for the 5600 so they would have suggested the 7400...

I haven't a clue what goes on in the mind of sprintfolk.
Now if I can only get past that red issue....but it's not just my phone, it's my 3rd arm (work and play).
You like your 5600? Should I negotiate? I've read all the posts on all the phones and since everyone seems happy with either I think it will come down to the color I like. Funny, was going to buy the 7400 initially.

Hello,
I'm pretty much clueless on how to download a ringtone I created. I've followed intructions and no luck. I have a Sanyo 8200. I've tried Ringtone Ripper, I've tried converting file to MP3 , also tried converting to qcp, also tried wav., and no luck.
When I downloaded to my phone, I received an error message. insufficent memory.
Then I downloaded again and this time it only had downloaded 1kb. The name of file was downloaded but no ringtone.
Can someone please help.

The 8200 or the 8100 dont get hot or even warm! I dont know why these rumors are out.
I know this is like a year late, but I don't need rumors to know that my 8100's earpiece get's hot. It has since day one and every person I personally know who's owned an 8100 had/has the same problem.
After about 20 minutes of talking it gets hot enough that my ear is sweating buckets. Beyond 30 is impossible.
I carry an ear-bud headset so I can talk to my clients.

In my experience, the 8100 ALWAYS held full signal, but im not sure about the comparison of the decibels to the 8200 since i never tried it. The battery would also keep charge for days and days.
