View Full Version : Sanyo 5500 Cracked LCD Cover: How to Fix??

The cover over the lcd on the front of my 5500 is cracked. The LCD still works fine.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Any one experiment with a dummy 5500 and see what parts are usuable? If this a viable solution, where can I get a dummy 5500 for a decent price (ebay on has one listed now and its with 2 other phones, dummyphones.com has them for $38.00 + S&H).
I really don't want to go through Lockline because I may not get a 5500 in return.
Any and all help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

you HAVE to get a 5500 in return. its the only readylink + video phone there is. however it may take a while to get it, and you may be stuck with a 4050 or 8200 for a couple of weeks until they get the 5500s in.

I'll give you a deal on my blue 4500, it cant be activated because I reported it lost, in order to get a newer vm4500 (which had problems and got swapped for a 4050). Both screens are in perfect condition. PM me

Has anyone taken apart a 5500? What is the best method to remove the screw covers on the display (flip) case?

if you reported it lost... I don't think sprint will let him activate it... because then wouldn't it be stolllleennn?

It would just be for parts.

You need to buy the tri wing screw driver first, ebay has some! Or take a T6 driver and file down the first three points to get the tri wing shape you would need for the screws that the 5500 has. To R/R the outer flip cover with the external LCD is easy to R/R, the inner main LCD is a pain to R/R cuz of the hinge. I myself have swapped screens on my 5500. There are 4 pieces of plastic that need to be removed to expose the screws, best to use a safety pin to slightly pop the pieces out, two top by earpiece, two bottom that look like "oval" shaped. Put those pieces and screws on a safe surface, remove the screws and gently from bottom to top pry the two halves apart. Put the replacement cover onto the bottom lower half reverse the procedure and you are done! ;-)

Thanks for the advice. I will give it a try this weekend if I can find the Tri-Wing screwdriver. Gonna check at the computer/electronics parts store.

NO never ever take a 4050 or 8200 for a 5500 you will never get a 5500 4050 or 8200 will be your new phone

The tri wing driver is a hard to find item, try Radio Shack. It is the same size a T6 driver. Ebay is the only source right now that seems to have the tri wing drivers. Or like I said buy a T6 driver and filed down 3 of the points. That will work also. Also buy an air can to blow any dust in the R/R stages, also a towellette or non static cloth helps, if you touch the inner part of the cover screen (not to mention the LCD screen also)!
Lastly a word of caution, if you're not a patient person or don't have steady hands or both. Don't do the procedure, cuz you can jack the LCD motherboard in the top part of the flip. And remember you will void the warranty by doing this!

For those of you that said it couldnt be done.
I did it. Transplanted the cover from a broken 5500 to my 5500. No more cracked LCD.
This is the crack
Good job! Glad my instructions helped ya!

I dont get it. Is that the finished one (after) or the phone before the procedure??

Thats what it looked like before. Actually that cover is on the broken phone I bought. So it is kind of a before and after. My phone no longer has that crack on the LCD.

Did You Remove The Inner Speaker Piece On The Original Top Faceplate? And Then Attach It To The New Faceplate Prior To Attaching It Back Onto The Phone?? When I Took Mine Apart After Getting The Right Triwing Screwdriver, I Noticed There Is A Small Circular Unit Attached By Screws On The Inside Of The Origianl Faceplate.. Looks Like This Is Part Of The Speakerphone And Needs To Be Attached.. Also, I Noticed Its Not A Triwing Screw, Its A Small Ass Phillips Head. Didnt Have That Small Of A Screwdriver So I Had To Put It All Back Together Again Until I Can Get That Small Head Driver.. Any Ideas On This??? Did Anyone Transfer The Thing Im Talkin About Onto The New Face Plate??

Errr, I wish my 'orignial' 5500 would come back to full life. I only use it to charge batteries in between my other 5500's use.
I'm supposedly on this "list" at a Sprint Store to get a replacement LCD for $50, and its been since August 2005...and they have yet to call me. My original 5500 has a cracked internal LCD Screen... Sooooo, I have an extra 5400 now, can I just take both of those phones, and have the techs there swap them out? I can imagine their the same screens... I'd rather have 2 5500 in use, than 1 5500 & 1 5400. THanks...
PS. I did search for the answer....wasnt able to find it. haha, so kick back.

you must really love your 5500...at this point it might be time to invest in something new. my 5500 is cracked at the hinge AGAIN. this is the third one. so I am gonna upgrade.
I dont think the techs would be able to swap out the LCD. It might be to hard of a task.

You can always go on ebay and get a cover for a few dollars plus shipping and put it on yourself as I have. You need to have a 3 point screwdriver (approx $10),available through most of the same people who sell the covers. It's not real hard to change the cover yourself or have a friend help you!

Are you sure it is the LCD screen and not the cover itself?

we cant use 'user' parts on a phone, but most stores do come across 5500 LCDs once in a while...I know 1 of mine is sitting on 10 of each, silver and blue

Ohhhhh yeea...I'm positive its the LCD screen 'itself' and not the cover. I honestly dont know how it cracked, without having the LCD cover crack too. It was a dark and drunken night. I fell on the sidewalk...haha, and I landed on my side, which happened to the same pocket my phone was in.... hahah, that was a crazzzzy night. But, I just want my 'original' VM-4500 to come back to life. haha, thats all I want. Its like finding a needle in a haystack for these stupid LCD screens.

sorta on the topic... if you were to lose/destroy your 5500... and get a replacement phone... that 100% does not hurt your 18-Month phone upgrade credit... I asked a CSR the other day, and she said that many times reps will accidentally screw you, and it just takes a quick phone call to sprint to fix it...
not that I'd ever sign a 1 or 2 year agreement... for anything...

Yes. The phone is up and operational again! I owe you. I left the phone with a Sales Rep and he took it to the back, mentioning that the tech (your friend) was backed up and busy. So, I got back a lil after 6:30 and she was gone. I wanted to personally meet her and thank her. I may call up there tomorrow, to still tell her... If you get a hold of her before I do, please express my deepest thanks to her.
