22 YEARS OLD?!?!?!

Holy crap!

It's cool to see such a companion stick with you over so many years. Seems like people these days treat pets as "disposable." Boy that gets my goat.......now I'm all cheesed off.......

Wow, a lot of cats here.

Zenlore1, I can't believe that cat is 22! We had a cat that looked just like Dboogie's that live to be 18 and I thought that was old.

MrTchMan, our first dog we had was named Sampson too. It was a crazy Dalmatian but, we lost it about 4 years ago to some unknown blood disorder.

Anyhow, here are our two dogs now.

I have it all, dogs, cats, ferrets, fish, and a god damn parrot.

All the dogs are show dogs, including a rescued champion:

http://www.infodog.com/brag/odogimages/oDL78801401.jpg

A page for her show career (infomration is outdated, but we have her now) : http://www.infodog.com/brag/dogpage/DL78801401.htm

We also have a puppy from the breeder who's dog just won best in group (herding) in Westminster, and our collie's father was the #3 collie in the US when we got him.

The puppy and collie are great show dogs, and all 3 are great pets. 2 of our cats are rescues (one from a shelter, one we found with 2 other kittens under a backhoe), and one we bought from a breeder.

It's a big happy house! :D

Our Siamese is like that, too. He *loves* to play fetch, that is until the puppy gets involved.

Yeah, Hailee's got a pretty weird pattern going. I believe her dad had completely black fur but her mother had tan/white patches. So Hailee has this weird mix of all three... her little plume underneath on her chest is mostly white but her fur on top is tan with a white undercoat... but tipped off in black. It's kind of odd when you look at it carefully, but it actually works very well together.

Is Pebbles a little pomeranian too? :) I couldn't tell initially, but I thought she had to be at least part pom because her striking resemblence to Hailee as a pup.

She is indeed a Pom and a handful as well. They do look quite similiar, amazing :) Pebbles' coat is almost exactly as you describe for Hailee. White undercoat with black tips and practically white under her chin/chest area (this is the main reason I've put off getting her groomed, I love her tips!!). And if you notice, she is definitely lightening up all over, nearly orange in some spots.

Isn't she? They look so much alike! Pebbles will be 5 months on March 28th and weighs 3.2 lbs (she was 2 months and 1.3 lbs when we got her). And I'll gladly post pics of her as she matures :)

Freaky, that's about the same weight Hailee was at around 5 months. She's about 7-8 lbs now... I'll found out exactly next month when I take her in for her yearly shots.

Hehe, funny if they turn out to look the same.

Heh, that is quite a coincidence :) I was concerned that she was gaining so slowly, but the Vet said she was perfectly healthy and not to worry. Good to know that they were of similar weight.

Yeah, if she's anything like Hailee, she'll be 7-8 lbs max. Hailee really blew up between 6 months to 1 year, so Pebbles' time is coming. I really don't see Hailee getting much bigger than she is now though.

Oh, and get used to Pebbles jumping around like she's gone mad. I just got home from work, and I think Hailee probably jumped a good 50 times before finally wearing herself out. She's got some crazy up's... even my friends with Yorkies and other dogs say she's got one crazy, crazy vertical leap.

Lol my cat kind of does the same thing. If my alarms are set, and they are going off, and I am still asleep in bed, she will hop on the bed; and proceed to run up and down my back until I wake up.....

Heh, the swat isn't too bad if his claws have been trimmed...otherwise, watch out.

Then there's my in-law's dog...this pic didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, but oh well. I'm still figuring this camera phone thingie out. You get the idea.

Anyway, this punk likes to sleep right in between me and my husband when we house sit, preferably under the covers with his head on the pillow. Then when he needs to go out, he paws you mercilessly until you wake up, regardless of what time of day or night it may be.

give him plenty of attention! always wanted a bird. some of them live so long, though. makes me nervous. i obviously won't be having a child anytime soon. but i did just get a rabbit. can't really have a dog or a cat just yet. actually, i can never have a cat. fiance hates them. here's Pepper. he's as close to a dog or cat as you can get. he's into everything and always wants to be by our feet. and we just got him.

yeah, you gotta cover them up at night or else they wont sleep.... also, if nobody is gonna be around for a long period of time i think you're supposed to put a mirror in the cage so it wont get lonely (yeah, birds are dumb).... anyway, if they get lonely they die!! and make sure if its one of those talking birds... make sure you teach it lots of profanity!!

For her annual rabies vaccination. While I was waiting for the vet, I took a picture of her just as she started to yawn.

I wish my kitty was that calm at the vets. Mine just went in last month for everything, and she was pissed.

Glad the new rabies shot is good for like 7 years now though...

My cat freaks out a little, but as soon as she realizes that she's getting all of the attention, she calms down ;)

give him plenty of attention! always wanted a bird. some of them live so long, though. makes me nervous. i obviously won't be having a child anytime soon. but i did just get a rabbit. can't really have a dog or a cat just yet. actually, i can never have a cat. fiance hates them. here's Pepper. he's as close to a dog or cat as you can get. he's into everything and always wants to be by our feet. and we just got him.

That's an awesome rabbit and FLAT ERIC! Reminds me of those Levi's commercials (flat eric that is).

thanks. this rabbit rocks. i left him out of his cage for four hours last night and not a single rabbit pellet or anything anywhere. he spent a lot of the evening rolling on his back just before getting comfortable and napping for a while next to our big patio door. he's just like a dog. he'll getting a running start from across the room and run right up to my nose at full speed and stop on a dime and push his nose into mine. weird. of course, as soon as he hits sexual maturity he'll probably start marking the whole house with urine. we'll have to try and get him fixed before then.

and flat eric is hysterical. i wished levi's made more of those commercials for the u.s. back then. i hardly ever saw them. nothing funnier than a random muppet.

I had a Austrailian Budgi for 17 years. We named him Scooter. They're basically the same thing as a parakeet, but can talk. He was a smart little bugger and could speak some 20+ words. Anyway, you don't have to cover a bird, you just need to watch them and see what they do. Sometimes birds that "talk" alot at night is an indication that they're not sleeping. Put a sheet over their cage and they'll stay quiet. Mirrors aren't a necessity either, although they do help to keep the bird entertained. Not all birds react to mirrors anyway. AND DON'T GET THOSE MIRRORS THAT ARE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BATHTUB!!

My mom has had two African Greys, one of which she kept for over 15 years. The bird was around 5 when she got him and she had to give him up because he started destroying her house. They get very jealous!

Hi name is Simba, he was a rescue from the local shelter (name came with the dog). He's part Terrier, part Hound. He's got some wild spots on him, although you can't see them too well in the pictures.

i've heard african greys are about as smart as a 5-year-old human, if not more. those things live for 50 or 60 years or more, right? i imagine they are a lot more effort to take care of because i heard they need tons of attention, intellectually-stimulating attention. i wonder how many people actually keep large parrots for the whole life of the bird? that's one of the problems with pet stores selling such large, expensive exotic birds. they live much longer than most people would like, and they need a ton of attention because they are so social in the wild. you will usually see about 10 sitting together in a tree, grooming each other constantly. i have a feeling a lot of them end up being passed around from home to home or wind up in a exotic bird shelter. though i have to admit, i've always wanted one myself. it just seems like more of a commitment than even a child sinceyou can usually get rid of them after 18 years or so :)

You have to be extremely committed to them. There have been stories of greys that have gone into deep depressions because they've outlived their owners, etc. They're very finicky and very needy. They can be very very entertaining and in the same respect, be annoying or destructive. Greys, Amazons and only a few others are really the only parrots worth owning in my opinion. Macaws, Tucans, and c0ckatoos are horrible birds as pets and are really too large for most homes.

I've even seen reports of people dedicating entire rooms for their birds. Customizing perches, etc. Speaking of which - mdhuber25 - you should make sure you put better branches in your bird's cage (if you care). One thing alot of people don't do is give their birds a variety of resting surfaces. Those store-bought machined perches that come with the cages are the worst thing for a bird's feet. How would you like to have to stand in one spot, on one surface, having to hold yourself up for your entire life? See if you can find an apple tree (crab apple would even work) and take a couple small branches with varied widths for him to rest on. The bark is good for them to eat too.

Oh and another thing I forgot to mention - those store bought birds (ESPECIALLY PARAKEETS) usually have some sort of mite, lice or disease. Check for crusting around its bill and you'll know you have mites. You can buy over-the-counter medicine dirt cheap to cure it.

EDIT: c0ckatoos was blocked out by this forum, so I had to respell it...

i gotta say, i love the c0ckatoos at this one pet store near me. i don't think they are for sale. they've been there for years. but there are two white ones, side by side, each with their own cage, and when you come up to them and put your fingers in their cage, they come over to you and put their head down and lean into you to be petted on their head and back. every single time. but i can see them being a handful.

petco started recently carrying these really cool plastic cages that seem pretty big and have all kinds of perches and stuff molded into them. i think they are supposed to be easy to clean and also great for the birds. might want to look into it. they have a nice display in most of the petco's i've been to. but i don't know anything about birds so i'm not sure if these cages are actually all they are carcked up to be.

actually, here's a link: http://tinyurl.com/3389e

i think it would be ideal for pet stores not to carry pets at all, just supplies. that way if you really wanted an animal, you'd have to go out of your way to get one and be more likely to want it long-term. getting rid of puppies was a good start. although, i guess there are a lot of "puppy farms" that are horribly inhumane to their animals.

OMG - what happened? Did he just kind of sit there and not move?

Sometimes dogs will help other dogs when they're blind. I think you'll be able to care for your dog, he just won't be as active.

Thats really horrible to hear (read). How old is he?

missdiva

Hes 5. His eyes have this blue milky covering , i did some research its a genetic disorder that is common in Akitas over 4yrs old, its pressure buildup that makes the blue color and its total loss of sight, irreversible. Hes bumping into walls, hurting his nose/face, and is totally scared!

My ****er doesnt know whats going on , she keeps trying to play with him! and hes 134 POUNDS so its not like he has room to bump into things.

I'm calling an eye specialist and making an appointment to see what can be done :(

Do you think they can relieve the pressure?

missdiva
04-30-2004, 12:13 PM
its not just pressure, its the genetic disorder, that in turn causes pressure and the damage is irreversible 90 percent of the time :(

Also found this, don't know if the website is valid, its blocked by my work...

Here is a web page that might help.
http://www.interlog.com/~eyevet/info.html

There is a condition called SARD that can cause a dog to go blind in less than 24 hours. This page has information on other eye problems of dogs also. SARD is not connected with a disease: perfectly healthy dogs have gone blind with SARD.
There is also information on handling your dogs blindness at this site.

I hope this gives you some help. I'm sorry about your dog's blindness! But with a little adaptation on your part he should get along fine. My (very) old cat did.
Wishing you hope and health,

I want a ferret. My cousin had one some years ago. How are they when it comes to training them and keeping them healthy?

Here's a picture of one of my two Rottweilers. This one is Smokey. The female, Sabrina, never seems to want to take a picture.

Smokey is about 4 or 5 years old. I can't remember how old exactly.

they are pretty easy to train when thier young tho you have to use some bitter apple to keep them from nipping at your fingers. they learn quick not to bite and baby ferret bites dont hurt at all.ferrets come pretty much litter train they always go in the cornor so if you put a box there they'll use it. if you want a ferret you really need to buy two because they get wierd and anti social if they are alone. males are healthier because the females are prone to addrenile glan disease. also the albino ferrets are usaully blind but it isnt a big issue because most ferrets have poor eye sight but thier other senses are sharp. usaul vet visits should be all they need to keep them healthy.
