I spoke with a data spec and told him I have BOTH shortmail and SMS. He said thats impossible; I logged onto shortmail and sent a test message. I explained to him that I think this is one of the reasons my sms is wrking so poorly.
He sat there for a minute and said "Your not supposed to be able to do that, it's supposed to be impossible. He asked around for a few minutes and when he came back on the phone he said "Well...everyone says your not supposed to be be able to have both". he was as baffled as I am.
Ultimately, he offered no explanation and couldnt do anything to remove the shortmail. He made some acct notes on my open trouble tickets (From Feb) and said he didnt know what to tell me....that those of us who have both sms and shortmail, should not.
If you have both, it mite be a good idea to call and let them know. He claimed this was the first time he had heard of that. After banging my head against the wall with this sms, I suspect having both sms and shortmail mite be the problem.

Since you have a Treo600 listed as your phone I assume that is the one you are talking about? If not, sorry; ignore everything below: :)
Does "logged onto Shortmail" mean Vision/Messaging/Categories/Shortmail, or using the Bowser Browser to go to the WAP site (http://smwl.uc.sprintpcs.com/sml/wap.do?button=OK) as a saved favorite?
The Shortmail option disappeared off of the Messaging Categories menu for me when the Treo600 was upgraded to 2way SMS, but I can still get to the shortmail WAP site that it was linked to, and still send shortmail.
I cant use Sprint's online send messaging page to send anything because there is no [Send] button displayed when using Bowser to see the page. I figured it was an intentional lockout to keep us from sending messages thru the website if accessed from an SMS phone.
Dont know if that helps any...

no..I mean I have a link to my shortmail from the vision homepage via my handset. It's not a bookmark. It is exactly the way it was before Feb 26, and it workes MUCH faster than my sms

If I understand correctly its Vision (home)/ then Messaging/ then Categories/ then choice Shortmail - the first of the methods I described above? My Categories list now has only:
1. Instant messaging
2 Email
3.Chat
4. Biz Connection
Yours presumably still has "x. Shortmail" as well. (I dont remember exactly what it used to say.) One thought: I set my messaging settings on the website phone Vision settings to SMS for default outgoing. It seems to only affect messages sent from that online area, tho. I actually wanted txt msgs sent to my AAPs to be forced to 1way messaging so I could send quick notes, and they wouldnt have to log onto Vision (which still works only about half the time) to get them. It sends them Shortmail anyway, to my annoyance, ignoring my default. You might try playing with the default outgoing choice between Shortmail and SMS if you havent already. Im in SoCal so you'd think things would be the same. Oh well.

Tried all that. The bottom line is, supposedly it is impossible to have both two way text and shortmail. I'm not the only one that has both, there are a few others on the board that have both too.
I'm guessing this is why some of us have so many problems with our sms. I Guess the system isnt designed to support both simultaneously.
I just hope they get it fixed soon.

From "Vision Home" select "0. My Account". You should see "5. Messaging". When you click on it you might get:
1. PCS Short Mail
2. PCS Mail
3. Help
4. My Account Home

I'm not gonna call it a problem in my case, because SMS has been working fine, but yes, I do still have Shortmail and it's still operational. And I'm afraid to call CS to ask about it. They may decide to tinker with it and mess something up.

Thanks for supplying that route. Its not the same as the one I was describing, and trying to get confirmation on how you guys got the option. When I go that route I still have shortmail as well. It works, of course, because it is a link to the same WAP site I first quoted. My SMS sent from the Treo 600 to another PCS phone takes minutes to hours to be received. The same for Shortmail from another phone arriving as SMS on the 600. If I send a msg from my computer via my phone's online Vision messaging page as forced SMS it always arrives immediately on any phone. Shortmail sent from the WAP site arrives immediately. Sounds like the same problem as described, but intermittent.
Since people with other SMS enabled phones (Deval?) reported they could also still access that WAP site(s) for Shortmail, and no problems with delays, I submit it may not be due to having "both" on the phone. Just a thought for consideration - I'm not arguing with anybody, or doubting their experience.

So it looks like everyone has both SMS and Shortmail.
I hate to say this, but maybe patience is the way to go? SMS being relatively new to Sprint and all.

Those of youu with SMS, try this url and let us all know if it works. That will answer the question. Here ya go:

I cannot access the page via that url. I tried both ways, both ways it tells me the page is unavailable or cannot be found. i can only access it via my handset thru my messaging options...not a bookmark, but a link.
i wish there was someone who could explain WHY sms and shortmail are supposedly unable to exist together. ive read time and time again that they cant, but would like to know why.
Correction..I can access it....the only difference is one has my shortlist and the other doesnt

When I was previously using pda apps SMS 600, I got an error message from their server that their implemented version of SMS was not compatible with my shortlist, and to delete it. I was having troubles with slow messaging at the time. A long shot, but thought I'd mention it...
I suspect the "not both" notion is just ecomomics. Why still allow you to access Shortmail for free when we can "charge" you to access SMS?

I can still access both (shortmail via my account options) on my Treo 600, and both generally get through to the recipient in a matter of seconds, not minutes.

It's good to see that I'm not the only one NOT having major problems with either one. There's hope for everyone else afterall.
Was there anything done with your account to make it work, or did it, like mine, just work from day one?

I'm able to access smw.uc.sprintpcs.com/sml/wap.do on my phone but that seems to be the only way for me to access ShortMail.

I was getting SMS and short mail when I switched over from my Sanyo 5300 to Sanayo 8200. When I called Tech Support the first time, I was told it was impossible, and I was like, you calling me a liar? Anyway....
This link helped to get rid of short mail on my phone:

Weird! Works on my Sanyo 7400....but only via that link. It even has my shortMail list! That's cool if it doesn't end up screwing anything up...because I don't understand why having SMS is limited to only 100 (unlimited an ADDITIONAL $10). Short mail was unlimited with Vision.
So with my Samsung a500 I paid $15 for vision, which included unlimited short mail (although I hated how slow it was to access the web on that phone).
With my 7400 I'm paying $25 for the mm pack...and would have to shell out an additional $10?? No thanks.
BTW, can anyone tell me of the alerts I've signed up to get from MSN mobile are considered SMS? Because my plan says I've already used 56 SMS...and I know I haven't even sent or received a dozen. All that spam from Hotmail though....but then again, I got those alerts free of charge when I only had Shortmail.
Again I'm confused...

From MSN Mobile's website: "Note: Your service provider may charge you for text messages that you send or receive while using MSN. Refer to your wireless service plan for more information."
I assume that means they are sending via SMS.

Having SMS and Shortmail will not affect each other. They are two completely different beasts. Shortmail is totally web based and SMS has nothing to do with the web. Those of you that experienced the SMS launch will remember that before you were able to send SMS, you needed to use Shortmail to send but were still receiving as SMS. The only change between a shortmail phone and a SMS phone is that when msgs are routed to your number, it directs them to SMS instead of shortmail. The only thing Sprint did after SMS launch was to remove the shortmail link (which appears to have come back) from your homedeck. This may be related to the browsing problem people are experiencing (page cannot be displayed, etc) because this is the same system that creates your web links on your handset.
Having both will in no way conflict with each other.

I had the shortmail link on my account too, but it disappeared around Oct/Nov... I used it a few times but mixed results, sometimes the messages just didn't go anywhere... I just used the link previously posted and it took me there, I sent four test messages, one to an email address. That one never got to its destination. Two of the messages sent to phone numbers got delivered, one didn't...
Don't like that, but hey, if it doesn't count against my 100 allowance, I will be using it for sending... ;)
