JCrewLeif

February third is the date the new SMS system is suppose to go active. Meaning phones like mine (VM4500) with the new SMS built in, will be able to send txt messages without signing on to vision. WILL THIS NEW SERVICE SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL TEXT MESSAGING LIKE VERIZONS PHONES? DOES ANYONE KNOW FOR SURE? IE WILL I BE ABLE TO TEXT SOMEONE IN ITALY? Thanks. Leif

it all good. i have no idea why sprint wouldnt support it verizon does (www.verizonwireless.com) i have friends who text me from italy and the past few months i could recieve their text messages from italy here in chicago on my sprint phone. but then on dec 12th or so the just stopped. i assumed it was because sprint was working on the new system. but as of this week i still cannot recieve them anymore. so what gives their new service blocks what i use to be able to recieve? and why make such a big deal about the new sms service if it only does half of what companies like verizon provide for no addtional cost? i guess well know for sure after this tuesday. maybe ill at least be able to recieve international sms again. heck maybe ill end up being able to message them back. we'll see in a couple days. but i seriously find my new sanyo vm4500 pointless if sprint does not offer international texting. not enough people in the us do it yet and im more interested in keeping in touch with my friends in italy. ill prob switch to verizon. anyway well see. thanks

According to Osiris (on sprintpcsinfo.com) -

On a side note, I've found out something just a couple of days ago that I think I've been saying differently before: the SMS clients on the enabled phones support up to 19 digits. International SMS *is* possible with the new service once it's launched. We have no tools to troubleshoot it, so there's no support for it, but we in Vision tech support have been given a list of a few countries and a few providers with whom we've seen SMS messages work.

And that's what we've been told to say, "We've seen it work with [such and such provider], and you're welcome to try it, but we provide no support for it."

- sheureka (by the way, why doesn't Osiris ever come around here anymore?)

There is a workaround to the international SMSing.

Most carriers allow incoming SMS via an email address.

phone#@provider.com

Find out your friend's format and message away.

I think, from another post I read, that these are companies/countries that have been reported to Sprint as working. As I understand it, others MAY work but they haven't been reported yet. So certainly it would be worth trying even if it's not on the list. - sheureka

I don't think Japan (DoCoMo/KDDI/Vodafone) uses SMS in their networks, all the cell phones have an email address and that's how they message each other.

Not too sure about Korea, but China Unicom's CDMA network does support SMS.

AFAIK Japan (DoCoMo) does use Mo-SMS - but they also have an e-mail addr like a vision e-mail, and you can send e-mail direct to their phone (quasi-sms??)

it's username@docomo.ne.jp for DoCoMo Japan 8180.

True SMS to japan would be nice.. :/

In case it helps anyone, you can sms people in Canada.

I just did it with a Telus customer. All you do is type in the 10 digit number and send. Works fine. I guess we'll see if there's some massive surcharge now for international sms.

Ok, I would like to revive this thread. Please someone tell me what exactly I need to enter in my phone to text the Philippines? Smart and Globe are listed and that's my sister's phone but we are still having problems receiving and sending to each other. I tried 011+country code+area code+number. Is this the format? Is this the same for picture and video mails?
