When I had my 2500 I used RL with some members and my hubby. To me it was just a glorified P2P and not woth the hassle.

So I cancelled it, and went back to my A620 :)

I don't have a use for a camera phone...its kinda silly when you have a thousand dollar digital camera =P
BUT I love flip phones and a speaker phone is wonderful, so I bought the RL2500, as overpriced as it is, not intending to use readylink, and I don't. I LOVE the phone but can't wait to get rid of it for the 7300 (the 5400 is TOO DELICATE!!!)

Like myself the novelty has died, many people I had on my RL list have dropped off either because they will not subscribe after the two free month's or just don't have nothing to talk about when being RL'd or vice versa....RL is good for businesses as you have seen yourself while construction workers etc etc use them.
I have NO need for RL, think I will get TREO 600.

cheerios Once I get the VM4500 I'll use it with my other friend that has the phone with RL for 2 months...after that I'm dropping it. It'd be a $10 add-on for me.

NGeorge
02-01-2004, 08:56 PM
Yeah Sprint needs to advertise it more. I also believe it would be in their best interest that every new phone released have ReadyLink as an option... don't have to use it, but if you do, it's there. They should also forge some "PTT roaming" agreements with Verizon & AllTel. I can't see spening $15 /month for Readylink if noone you know has it. At least with Nextel you know everyone who has Nextel has PTT.

Personally I'd like to see a "free Readylink" option... maybe where you can have a maximum of 3 contacts at a time, but any more, and you have to pay. That way people can try it and use it until it gets popular (giving people a reason to use the feature and more people to buy it)... Maybe offer it free for 6 months (since it takes time to get 'used to' and work into your way of life) then charge $3.99 /month for a max of 3-5 people.

I'm paying for RL but I HAVE to disable to sometimes because it gets on my damn nerves, for those of you that dont have RL, when you sign on/sign off vision if goes thru a whole "preparing" stage, and its really annoying when you are using shortmail

When I voted, and I was waiting to see the Results screen pop up, I expected to find that people like me--VM4500 owners who do *not* use RL--constituted a sizable minority. Imagine my surprise when I found out I was part of a whopping majority!

Of course, this is far from a scientific poll, but I'll bet it's not too far off the mark as a reflection of the world outside these forums. And if that's true, then it means that RL is a bit of a flop. Keep in mind, please, that we are at a point right now where most owners of these phones could be using RL for free (2-month trial) if they wanted to. And yet, most don't even bother to sign up for the trial. Not even out of sheer curiosity, or for the novelty of it, or because the cute chick at the Sprint store talked them into it.

I will surmise that this is for two main reasons.

One: most people with these phones don't know anybody else with ReadyLink, or at least nobody with whom they would be likely to talk on a regular basis using the service.

Two: even the ones who do know somebody with the service don't think that they'll want to use it badly enough to spend that much money each and every month for it. Somebody who right now has no Vision service would have to pay a whopping fifteen bucks a month for RL! Folks who already have regular Vision get off fairly easy--just another five bucks--but those with a Picture Pack who opt for the Vision+RL package actually *lose* their PM and would have to pay another five dollars to keep it, bringing the total to ten. And remember, the 4500 is the most popular RL phone, and it's a camera phone. A lot of owners probably have the Picture Pack.

Is having a PTT-style service really worth that much to the average Sprint customer? In most cases, if the answer to that question had been yes, the consumer would have gone with Nextel in the first place.

In other words, I think what's happening here is that there was never a huge, burning demand among SPCS's customer base for push-to-talk. The people who really want/need it (businesses, public agencies, and insecure teenagers) are already with Nextel. Sprint's customers, if you ask them in a telephone poll or focus group whether they want the service, will say "yes"--but when it comes time to actually drop fifteen bucks a month, they balk. Especially if there's nobody to talk to.

Getting this service to take off will be a major challenge for SprintPCS.

I use it with just one other person that I know with it. The thing I like about it compared to the speakerphone option is the mic turning on and off. If you use speakerphone where its noisy, like in the car, it makes it hard to hear the other person if the speaker goes in and out. With RL you can hear great and then push to respond. I dont like how it has to set the RL up everytime you use Vision like stated before. I dont like how you have to open the phone and push a button if there is an error of some kind. I dont like the alert system, I have to say the persons name I am RLing for them to know im there. I do like the phone alot and would not want any other. I would dump the RL service if it were not free with my 100+ plan. If they fix a few things, come down on the price, and give the ability to talk with oter providers it will be a great service. If they could only get it to work with Nextel it would be a big hit.

I used RL once and I liked it a lot. However, the add'l money for the feature and the fact I have no one to RL except for forum members is not worth it; I rather keep my $5 P2P. Another thing I dislike about it, is the use of your number as the RL number. I like Nextel's idea of using a separate number. Anyhoo, the fact that this is the best looking SMS ready phone made me want to keep it.

My wife uses the RL to get me at work and it works great. Its good for her when driving to be able to use just one button and not have to look down and dial a number. How ever, the cost for the service needs to come down. It works in my office when the Nextel won't. I really wish my employer would get rid of Nextel. But, I'am affraid that Nextel is too far into their nickers. :(

Tomorrow will be two weeks since I've had my RL2500. I didn't buy it for the RL. I went looking for a clamshell to replace my 4900. I am only about 13 months into a 24 month contract and they wouldn't offer me a discount until 18 months. So, I added a second line and qualified for the new activation discout. I really want the Treo 600, but also wanted a clamshell. Now I'm going to keep my RL2500 and upgrade my 4900 in July for the Treo 600. I'll probably also replace my RL2500 with the RL7300 when it's released. Currently, I don't know anyone else that uses RL. But, the Sprint rep gave me free RL for the life of the new line. Yes, you read correctly. I thought I misunderstood. Maybe free RL for a few months or the contract. But, no. He gave me free RL as long as I keep the new line. Maybe I'll use it more after more friends/family get it.

Bought mine in early December. Used it with my friend. Then I bought my wife hers a few weeks later. They are the only two I se it with a lot. I have a couple of other friends with RL but rarely RL them. I am very happy with RL and so is my wife. We use it a LOT. Having RL has reduced my PCS to PCS calling. Its quick and convenient for us to use.

Well, I got my phone for the digital camera, camcorder, AND RL feature but I still haven't used it because I don't know anyone else who has it. I'm actually in the process of trying to convince my boyfriend to switch over from Nextel but I don't think that that's going to happen because I had A LOT of problems trying to get my Vision and RL to function properly -- which turned him off to the idea. So I think that after the free trial, I'm going to cancel RL and stay with just Vision and picture mail until some of the people I know get RL and the $15 will actually be worth it. Oh, wait! Or until they link up their walkie talkies with Nextel, which they say is in the works.

I saw the demo at the store when I bought my SCP-7300, and was distinctly unimpressed. Based upon the usage patterns that I've got, it serves no purpose and the ReadyLink capability is superfluous on the phone.

I don't project a need for it in the future, either. Luckily, Sanyo foresaw that the service would not appeal to all users and rigged the phone such that I now have a handy voice memo button on the left side of the phone.

Very pleased that it can be disabled. $15/month for the service is unreasonable to boot.

My gf and I used RL for the free 2 month trial. Then our bill skyrocketed so we decided against it as we could just call eachother on free pcs to pcs. In addition, we didn't know anyone else with RL. It did work great, however, just not worth the price. Personally, I think that RL's pricing should be oriented in a way where it's like a $5 add on. If you have it on one phone you have it on all phones without paying for each phone. Also, it really pissed me off that RL+Vision combo didn't allow you to have the picture pack. You had to pay even more to get picture mail.

I would like to see sprint have a RL+Vision that allows for picturemail, because the Vision picture pack does.

Just to give you an idea, our monthly bill right now is $103 after taxes for 2000 AT, 7PM N&W, F&CA option, Vision Picture pack on both phones. (That includes a 15% corporate discount). Before, with the corporate discount, our monthly bill was $134 after taxes. To have RL on both phones, and that didn't include the picture pack on both phones.

Getting back to the original question, I plan on coming over to Sprint soon. Currently with Nextel because of their heavy duty phones (not their DC). I really like the RL-2000 because it looks like it will not fly in a bunch of directions when dropped, like the i58/i305. RL-7300 also looks "tuff" like the i60/i530 and has 65k colour. Never use DC and would not use RL unless I find a user group.

I like RL and use it occasionally. Most of my contacts I met throught this site. Great people to talk to... and some actually help me with my (sometimes stupid) questions.. Nice feature to have. I am waiting for it to catch on, like most others, so my friends have it. Around here most everyone has US Cellular. They have great customer service. My friends ask how I like Sprint, and they say they've heard that the CS is horrible. (I've never had a CS problem though that couldn't be resolved!).

I cancelled one of my 3 US Cellular lines yesterday and when the CS rep heard I ported one of my lines over to Sprint, she started to laugh!! She said "Sprint???!!!". I could hear her pee hit the floor she was laughing so hard! :hee: But that made me :furious: Not really.

but DC has shorter delays.

Not really. I have to use Nextel at work, and I don't really see much of a difference in delays between RL and DC. With both systems, it depends on how long the other person waits to key their mic and begin speaking. Otherwise, I find them both equally as fast. No real difference between the two.

Those who have never used DC may be a little slow in responding to RL, and I believe that may give the appearance of lag compared to DC where those users are more proficient with it.

At U of Miami a ton of people have the 5500, but I doubt many of them use RL beyond the free trial. But then again it was still $15 / month until recently, so maybe it'll start up again.

I want RL so it's there when it becomes useful for something but my Samsung SCH3500 broken in December 2003 so I was pushed into an 8100 before RL got popular.

Readylink is great when I'm at the store and I need to ask my GF which kind of soda or what kinda chips to get. Also great when we split up in the mall and wanna stay in touch or whatnot. It's less cumbersome than staying in a call.

Some of use that inconvenience to keep the bored idiots of the world from talking to us all day long. All you need is 12 bored friends with ReadyLink and you don't have a life either. If you want to talk, call and say "uhh" a lot. If not, RL someone just as bored as you. To me, free PCS2PCS is much more valuable. All of the uhh-pressure, none of the cost. Free PCS2PCS is available on a Nextel for a stratospheric cost.

I'd rather get all the way through the store and call once for all the items I'm stuck on rather than

RL... potato chips?
RL... meat?
RL... horseradish?
RL... pizza?

You were sent to the store because someone else was busy, not because they want to sit around and field your RL calls the whole time.

If you're not using RL for broadcasting to multiple units, you probably don't have enough to do.

 During the first several months my twin sister was the only one I knew that had Readylink (Which proved quite boring!), but since Sprint is ushering-in all these fly-***** VM,RL, and MM phones I guess more folks are getting with the Readylink program (Although I still want to see a damn Readylink commercial in the near future!). I've met a few people in the forums with RL, and I've found that a few other family members have RL also, so I'm using mine quite a bit more. By the way ... when does the 5600 REALLY drop? Haven't seen a DAMN thing on Phonescoop -- sheesh!

I don't know if I've ever seen an RL spot. Of course, I don't own a TV so could someone send me the audio of such a spot if it exists? Also, I'd use it if I knew folks who had it.

For what it's worth, SMS messages are not voiced nor do they output in Braille so in this case RL is a better option. Additionally as an amateur radio operator and a former GMRS licensee, I have an easier time getting my head round RL and other similar half duplex systems.

Just as a follow on to some of the SMS related comments within this discussion thread: Good old fashion CW will beat SMS messenging every time unless the SMS users are employing some form of predictive text entry. Lets hear it for CW!

AI4I is an amateur extra class callsign from nineteen seventy eight or seventy nine.

BTW...a blind friend of mine recently obtained a Nokia phone which handles the major functions verbally: SMS, Email, WAP text, caller ID. I don't remember the model number of this GSM phone on the Cingular Wireless net.

Yes, CW has been shown to be faster than SMS in most cases, even with predictive text and where all the words are first choice, or defaults.

CW, in this context, is short for "continuous wave", a slightly misleading term which basically mean Morse Code, where the radio frequency carrier wave is interrupted in synch with the dits and dahs. Another - much less used - abbreviation is RT, short for Radio telegraph. CW and RT are not applicabe to the wireline, or railroad, telegraphy of the nineteenth century.

Can I get a Mozilla Email client for my Sanyo RL-7300?

No sir, continuous wave. It's the on off keying of a transmitter to send morse characters.

That will depend on how long it takes to get all the Nextel stuff moved up to 1.9 GHz and intigrated into the 3GCDMA network.

I bought the PM 8200, because I liked the phone. It gave me what I wanted in a phone. The RL is ok, when I can get someone to RL.

I recently lost my VM4050, then they sent me this 5600. I had it for almost three or four days before i realized it was an RL phone. I guess I'll go get my girl an RL phone now. I don't know if i like it though. i saw it in It's very early stages and it sucked, plus i'd been using Nextel. maybe I'll test it out soon.

Sorry I couldn't vote MM-7400 here

I bought my phone because I lost my other one 8100.

I just wanted to be up to date and then the 5600 came out..... :scare:

I'm even thingkng about dropping my insurance because everytime I've purchased a new phone is because I lost the old one :irked:

but as the price of phones rise, maybe i'd better keep it

Yeah Sprint needs to advertise it more. I also believe it would be in their best interest that every new phone released have ReadyLink as an option... don't have to use it, but if you do, it's there. They should also forge some "PTT roaming" agreements with Verizon & AllTel. I can't see spening $15 /month for Readylink if noone you know has it. At least with Nextel you know everyone who has Nextel has PTT.
--Nat

I personally don't use ReadyLink. I tried it for two months free on my 4920, and can honestly say that it sucks. It's no wonder why Sprint doesn't advertise it on TV. Every time you turn your phone on, finish playing a game, or finish using the web, it takes 10 seconds to ''prepare.'' Also, when you initiate a conversation with someone, it takes between 5-10 seconds for them to hear you. Sure after that it's instant, but with the initial lag, it's easier just to make a regular phone call to them (especially if you have free PCS-PCS calling). I think that if Sprint were to run a huge advertising campaign now, ReadyLink would not live up to the expectations of customers, and leave a bad taste in their mouth. To do this before the merger is complete, when Nextel actually becomes Sprint (and YES, within the next year they WILL drop the Nextel name), would be a really bad strategy. It's in their best interest to just let people think ''oh, well if I want push-to-talk, i have to go with nextel, because they are the only ones that have it.'' (yes, I know verizon has push-to-talk too, but they don't promote it that heavily either) Nextel would live up to their expectations, because, frankly, they are the only phone company that was built from the ground up for push-to-talk, and they are the only ones with truly ''instant'' direct connect.

Now, if those Nextel users can just be taught how to DC with the speakers muted, a lot of people will be a lot happier!
