I try to go and buy one and the Mgr., some prick that doesn't know me, doesn't know that i've come into the store phukkin 40 times so far this month waiting for RL to launch and this phone to come out says, "right now we only have 4 or 5 (LIAR!) and they're only for new activations. I'm sorry to hear that. That sucks. I hate when I hear stuff like that. Makes me nervous and upset. Probably not as much as the person it happened to. Geez, I hope that doesn't happen to me... The rest were like "the what? of we don't have that yet" and one even told me to try best buy or radio shack because they sell sprint phones too and I can activate them at the sprint pcs store. I just played with a gray one in a Sprint Store here in NYC, I could have bought one had I felt that that extra $130 above and beyond what I paid for the VGA1000 was necessary. Don't get me wrong, this phone is spectacular, it weighs virtually nothing, the camera and screen is very clear, the video works great, the outer display switches between old school b/w and color, and all that good stuff. But, I don't know anyone else with RL, so I don't need it right now, I don't see myself shooting amateur video with my phone so often as to warrant the extra price, plus the $5 Sprint will no doubt charge me for video mail, so I don't really see why paying $230 after rebate is going to be worth it for a little better camera, that I didn't even notice if it has a flash or not(it must though right?). Great phone, but $380 bucks or $230 after rebate seems a wide gap from the $100 the very capable VGA1000 costs, am I wrong??

When I walked in I asked the first rep who was at the door, she referred to another rep for "new phones." That rep sadi they didn't have the 4500 only the 2000, or not the 5500 only the 5400. However, I told her that was odd because they were supposed to come out today, so she checked with another rep off the floor in the back, who had two of them in boxes in his hand, then miraculously there was one right behind the counter that she unplugged and let me play with!

Well, first of all I agree with you about the VGA1000, it is awkwardly weighted, but it is so small that i don't feel like i am gonna drop it. This phone is very evenly weighted, light no matter what. It is really like having a casette tape in your hand, for those of us that actually remember recording songs off the radio on tape! The thing is so damn light, take the batery out of the VGA1000 and it feels like that does closed

Attention Florida residents!!!
I've called a large majority of Sprint stores here in Florida this afternoon.
No one in Orlando / Daytona claim to have the phone. One store even said they don't have a release date. (which prolly means they have it but wont sell it)
Called a few stores down south. The Coral Springs store DOES have the phone. Too bad thats about 3 hrs away.
Most of the stores say few weeks. I say few hours. Keep trying! Theres obviously people that work at these SPCS that have no idea what they are talking about.

I have $10 Vision on my account. The rep informed me that if I jump up to a Vision + Ready Link plan the breakdown is $15 Vision + $5 Ready Link. That is why they are telling you that RL is only $5.
To answer your question, you cannot add-on RL for $5, you'll have to drop your $10 Vision and pay $20 for both together. ...according to the rep I spoke with.

It's amazing how little the customer service reps know in comparison to sprintusers.com. I just got off the phone with 2 different reps in the store and neither of them knew the Sanyo 5500 even existed, talk less of when they are going to receive them. The sad part is one of them is a friend of mine and I had to play dumb just so he doesn't feel too bad.

It's $15 a month if you just want readylink
If you have a $100+ MRC plan, RL is free as well as vision on the first line, it's then $15/$20 per additional line if you want RL/RL+Vision.
If you have a plan that is under $100 but has vision for free on all lines, you will only have to pay the $15 increase on each line.. not lose your free vision and add on RL + Vision for $20. $15 increase only.

maybe they will even have silver on dec. 7th. i really only like silver phones.

Went to a Sprint Store today to ask about the 5500..the manager told me it would "hopefully be in before Christmas." I said that it was supposed to launch today and he claimed no knwledge of it. Either he is a liar or Sprint is really unorganized. I actually wouldn't be surprised if both is the case.

I just went to two spring stores in Nashville and they both did not have them. I called two others and they are expecting them this week. One guy in the store said that they will have them at 9am tommorrow and only have one demo right now. I asked if he had any in stock and he said no...FU**ING LIAR. I should have asked if you open at nine how are you going to have them at nine without having them in stock right now.

What's the difference between .mov and the 3gpp thing? Just curious. I remember a long time ago that the Apple Quicktime site was talking about this. I know that the Nokia 3650 uses the 3gpp thing. I DID record video on one once. It was oddly 'blocky'. It was not so good. Maybe it's me, but, what I've seen with the 5500's video, it seems better. Could just be my eyes.

The biggest factor is video bitrate..
the 3650 packs it very tight (under 100kB for 15 seconds), while i suspect the Sprint phone size is around 300kB, given the 30 second upload time and nominal 10kB/sec we see on our handsets.

I'll say this, when I get alocated a phone the is extremely sought after, my reps usually tell me to reserve them for new activations. In the end, If I can make a sale though, I'll part with them to an existing cust. This guy is probably just trying to pad his sales.

They have them at the sprint store in the camp creek parkway shopping center near the airport. I got to play with it for a while. Nice phone. Speaker was smaller on the outside than the 5400s speaker. Also the volume settings on the speakerphone were much better on the 5500. I placed a call on speakerphone with both and at lowest setting the 5400 is still loud, the 5500 was quiet enough to hear but not so loud that the whole store heard.

The ringers are nice and clear! I'm not sure how many chords it is ut I think it's 32. They actually sound more quiet than on my old 8100! The Spkr is great! I was talking to my friend (who has a a620) and he didn't know he was on spkr till I told him. Then he was like "really? Naw, it sounds like a regular phone call".

Well, I called bright and early today, and both stores said they didn't have it. Went about 3:00 pm to the Sprint PCS store and spoke with one of the floor representatives. She didn't know about the phone but another rep next to her did. She went to the back and brought out an activated demo model. I was so excited. Then I asked to buy one. She went in the back and came out and said they were not for sale. WHAT?
I left that store and went to the next nearest one (one that I always seem to get better service at). Walked in, and they had the VM4500 on display. Asked the rep if I could buy one, and he said of course. A few minutes later, and I was on my way home with my brand new phone.
And yes, I love it!!!
I used to own a Sanyo 5000 and when I upgraded to my 5300 I noticed that something was different about the phone, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Then I figured it out. The antenna was on the opposite side than the 5000. I took a while to get used to it for some reason. Anyways, I now have the VM4500, and the antenna got moved back to the other side again. What is that all about?
Menus, internet, camera, and other functions, work a lot more quickly now compared to the 5300. Also, the screen is much brighter.
I don't have anyone to RL yet, so I tried a speakerphone conversation with my wife, and it sounds very good. On level 4 the speakerphone volume is very loud. I will probably try it again on 2 or 3 next time.
The phone itself is lighter and slightly more compact than the 5300. I asked if they had any silver ones at the store, but they didn't have any. The longer I look at this navy blue phone, though, the more I like the color. I guess I was used to silver phones so much.
One more thing, the charger connects through a round metal pin style. I put the 5300 charger on the 4500, and it still chargers through the data port too. I guess you can hook a charger and the data cable simultaneously.
I can't wait to upload the Reqwireless html web browser and other apps I had to see how they work.

Most of the stores i DC should have it (I know the 18th street store did)...
And from What I can tell VMail looks to be included if you have unlimited vision already (or maybe because i am grandfathered in due to my vision plan being older...)

The rep that sold me my 5500 said it was inluded w/ picture mail. I have the $10 vision and they didn't add the $5 VideoMail to my account (I checked on Sprintpcs.com). I've been sending videos since I got it so I hope I'm all good ;)

I'm pretty sure that only the first phone (the main phone) gets vision and rl for free. Anyone else have any input?

Bought mine in the Paramus, NJ store. North Bergen wouldn't sell me one even though I knew they had 'em in the back. The Paramus store was mobbed, I guess it's a very high volume store.
Added Ready Link but it doesnt go active until midnight tonight. I am getting an error code when I try to set it up.
Like the phone so far, it works connected to the laptop using the 8100's drivers, however, I cannot transfer my phonebook using snap sync yet. I am going to post a new thread with regards to this.

One more thing, they built the universal charging port right next to the regular data port. Kind of sucks cause you cant charge the phone with a universal charger while surfing the net with the data cable. Oh well, I'll work around it or get a USB data/charging cable combo

oh, no problem. i just thought it was funny because if it DID have a 2mp camera, the heads of everyone in this forum would have exploded from the excitement. as it is, i am surprised to not see more pics from this phone. i don't think we have yet to see a normal, medium size pic from this thing.

Picked up two of them this afternoon at a local Sprint store in Birmingham, although I won't have service for a couple of days since we used WLNP and are moving our numbers from Cingular..
Quick impressions:
Screen quality is excellent. Blue backlit keypad is really nice, but wish the "soft" buttons and the d-pad area were a little brighter lit. Menu system is excellent, and my wife can't stop laughing at the little dog that runs across the screen doing silly things. Speakerphone is great, as well as the voice dial system. You have a flash for pictures AND the light can be used while taking video clips as well (it stays illuminated). Only has 3 game demos (no full versions) for those that asked. The color of the phone is very nice. At first I was hesitant about having a "blue" phone, but I think the color looks really good and that I like it better than the standard silver. It's so dark that it could easily be mistaken for black in color. Most of the big functions of the phone can be used without ever opening it (phone, camera, readylink, etc.) Travel charger included is very small and portable. Looks like RL2500 batteries would work, but they will not match the blue color of the VM4500 making it look odd.
Overall, I'd have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed with the phone. I looked at the cases they offered and couldn't decide on one. I'd prefer a leather one as to better protect the finish on the phone, but wasn't very impressed with the Sprint case for it. I was afraid that if I got the holster style case it would rub off the finish over time in the bottom corners. Anyone seen a nice leather (or non-plastic) case/holster that fits the 5400/5500?
Feel free to ask any questions about the phone as well.

I can back this up and go one step further. I have the $100 2000 minute plan and I activated my 5500 in store today and she signed me up for ReadyLink for free since I had free Vision already. She also found an option for VideoMail for only $5 rather than the supposed $10. I don't know if it's because of the $100 plan or what!

Yea...you can do this...you'll have to wait until the rebate is processed before switching numbers or it will look like the new phone has been active as long as you've had your number. Hopefully the rebate is instant and you can switch within a few minutes!

I have the same plan as you. I called Sprint to ask about my confusion with the VideoMail $5 add-on and he said, in order to not get charged mbytes sending video, I DO need it, but then proceeded to say, "you know, with the plan you have, you can get RL for free.". I am VERY happy about this.
