I have been using this device for about 14 hours now and I have to say I love it!!
That being said there are a few things that HS missed the mark on but none are a big enough issue to not purchase the device.
I have been a PDA user since my Old Ipaq 3600 and have used both Pocket PC and Palm (Ipaq 3600, HS Visor Pro, Toshiba e755) and I will say that for down to earth everyday usage Palm OS still is king. Sure PPC has more multi media and game capabilities but all in all for the business user Palm is the choice to make.
My last PDA/PPC purchase was an e755 by Toshiba and I used my Sanyo 8100 as my phone, this should give you some idea of what I am currently accustom to using and what the bar is for the T600.
T600 First impression WOW this thing is cool looking. It really does just fit in your hand like it was meant to be!
A little after the wow factor has slowed you will notice that the case they provide has a serious flaw, don’t get me wrong it is great for protecting the device but you can do NOTHING with it except carry it around in your hand. For 600 dollars they could have included a 2 dollars belt clip on the thing and it would have been the perfect case.
Ok to the BIG questions everyone is wondering about (or at least the ones I wanted to know) I will use a scale of 1-10,5 being performing as well as my previous combo with the 2 devices
How is the screen??????
Well I have to give this a 3. I knew it was going to be a 160x160 but I have to say the color is not what I expected. The screen is VERY clear and usable so the usability is NOT affected at all and I believe this is what HS wanted. The color depth is terrible,12-bit in today’s devices I feel is a serious flaw, I know they say they did it for “battery” life but I question this. If you pay attention to HS marketing they know this is s flaw because you will very rarely see them go into any detail on the screen resolution and color depth when showing specs on the device. The biggest reason I have an issue with the screen is that you can’t even look at a photo ou took with it’s own camera and make it look good because of the banding you see. Other than that the screen does the job of displaying the basic info you want from your PDA.
How is the Phone?????
I give this a 8 and this is against the solid Sanyo 8100. Receiver volume is GREAT it is clear and not muffled as you can get on the 8100. The ring tones you MUST hear it is a 10 compared to the 8100 in sound and fullness and a 8 compared to my Toshiba’s speaker. (I would rate it better than an Ipaq speaker for those that know how well the Ipaq does) The integration is wonderful and it is VERY easy to use. There really isn’t much you can say other than they hit the mark on the phone integration.
How is the web????
Against the 8100 it is a 9 against my PPC with Pocket IE I rate it a 5 maybe 6 in some cases because it supports Java. Speed is nothing ground breaking. Enough said.
How is the Camera????
Ok this is s tough one. In low light as it has been said it is a 2 BUT in a well lite area it is a 9 and I would say it is a 7 against the 5300 (I did own one for a while) The lens is of much better quality than any camera phone I have seen, it is the software that is hurting. The good thing about that is that can be improved with software updates.
These are some thing that I do NOT like and I hope someone in the DEV team is reading this for future updates.
No voice memo included??? Come on HS my 100 dollar 8100 has this, yes I know there are third party appz but I really would have liked to have seen a well integrated memo feature included like on the Sanyo phones.
Also this phone is in serious need of a BACK button, you will wish it had one trust me!
One last thing, there is no email program included to work even with your sprintpcs mail, that is a big dropped ball there and should be corrected. Again my 8100 had this.
In closing I must say this is the BEST Combo unit out there to date and it will make me so much lighter while moving from place to place during the work day and I guess the bottom line is this
YES I would buy it again and YES I would recommend it
Thank you HS for a wonderful step forward in this field and keep up the great work with Palm
Now my Girlfriend wants one!!!!!
