View Full Version : Free Hotspot app (FoxFi) No ROOT needed!

I downloaded the FoxFi app off the GooglePlay (Android Market) last night. It's currently FREE on the market. This app has two features:
1. It will turn your phone into a WiFi Hotspot, and/or
2. You can tether the phone with another device via Bluetooth.

I can confirm that the Hotspot works on my Samsung E4GT which is NOT ROOTED!!! How awesome is that. I only had a 3G signal available when I tested the app. So I will try with 4G later today. Regardless, it allows Samsung E4GT owners to turn their phone into a hotspot.

I posted in this forum because my coworkers, one has an HTC EVO 4G and the other has an HTC EVO 3D, cannot access the hotspot feature on the FoxFi app.

Enjoy it while it lasts....

I wonder what they did to make it work on non-rooted devices

Just downloaded FoxFi to my Epic 4G Touch.

Wifi did not work with my new Samsung Galaxy Tab running honeycomb.
I tried bluetooth and got the extra instructions to download PdaNet Tablet (aka Honeycomb Bluetooth Tether).

Pulled that down, set the proxy as the instructions said (Host 127.0.0.2, port 1234), and WHEEEE!

Not fast, but I don't get 4G ever - nearest spot is about 50 miles away at Tampa Airport.

This will come in handy in the camper.
I know it works with Bluetooth DUN, but slowly.
Still have to test on Wifi with my elderly laptop.

so you are saying you can't get the wifi hotspot to work with your tablet? does it work with your laptop?

I also have the 10.1 galaxy tab. I just can't test it out because I can't get a data connection at all in my neighborhood...3g, or 4g...ugh!!

Did not work on the EVO Design. Kept getting error message.

My coworker's EVO 4G gave him an error message stating that HTC is blocking access when he opened the app.

I wonder if HTC locked down their phones with the security updates after the bad publicity from the Carrier IQ fiasco.

4G shuts down when you turn on WiFi. I've been using FoxFi for a few days on my E4GT and get decent 3G speeds, but 4G turns off. I haven't found any reliable tethering method for the E4GT that takes advantage of 4G. If someone knows how, please share! :)

**** me running, it works!

Hey what's this. Ok I see the FoxFi blue wifi symbol at the top, pulling down the blind and taping on it gives me the FoxFi set up menu. But when the hot spot is turned on a ((.)) Hotspot activated icon is also there in the ongoing menu with "Touch to configure" below it. Taping it gives the Sprint Hotspot menu which we all DON'T want so I am leaving that puppy unchecked.

How can I block or get rid of the ((.)) Sprint Hotspot icon at the top of my phone so I don't accidentally activate it?

Is my phone now telling Sprint that I have a Hotspot activated through an app?

I rooted my phone within hours of buying it. What google android wifitether app? A link would be helpful, please. I would especially appreciate a link that shows that it works on a rooted device with stock ROM and enables 4G speeds. :)

I also have the 10.1 galaxy tab. I just can't test it out because I can't get a data connection at all in my neighborhood...3g, or 4g...ugh!!

To follow up...
today, I discovered that there is a newer version of pdanet tablet which replaces the honeycomb thing.

I deleted the older one, and installed the new pdanet tablet.
Started foxfi on the epic touch and pdanet tablet on the tab.
For each, I chose wifi instead of bluetooth.
Not only does it work well, but the configuration is now just one-click.

I tested for about 10 minutes, and had good speeds.

The only problem I have now is, what do I do with the copy of PDAnet 3.0.2 that I paid for and installed on my epic touch? seems like the whole new setup is free??

--------------------------------------------
Just to be clear...
Foxfi is on my phone - a Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. I never have access to 4G, so i have no clue whether that shuts down when the foxfi hotspot starts.

The tablet now runs PdaNet Tablet, the new version of the Honeycomb thingie (poor memory and no access to my earlier post). Configuration is now trivial, and the the wifi connection to the touch works seamlessly. I haven't bothered to pull the laptop out of the closet - that will have to wait until our guests vacate the gust room/office sometime next week.

I didn't mean to take your thread off topic, harrychimp. I understood the topic to be about FoxFi, which works on both rooted and non-rooted devices. Someone asked if they were able to tether at 4G speeds using FoxFi, and the answer is 'no.' Since it seems there's really no more to be said about FoxFi, I didn't think adding a few minor posts about other options to get 4G would be an issue. Anyway, I'm happy to stick to FoxFi on non-rooted devices.

No big deal. It's great that this site allows us to share our Sprint experiences, the good, bad, and ugly.

To the person who said he/she was able to access 4G on FoxFi, how did you do that? I was only able to get 800dl/200ul using 4G on my Xoom which was linked to my phone.

This app really runs down your battery. I has it on during a 2 hour trip so my kids could watch shows on their tablet. Ran down a full battery to nearly nothing in that time. Phone ran out of charge in the middle of Costco.

From now on I am only running this app when my Epic is plugged in to a charger.

All wifi tethering eats battery. You have both the wifi radio and 3g radio running and constantly transferring data. Whatever streaming usage you normally get, expect half of that time when used as wifi tethering. Sometimes you can't even charge your phone because the phone will overheat and as a safety measure, it'll disable charging.

Even if it kills your battery it's a lot better then payin 30.00 a month I think.

I figured out a way around this problem yes they took it off the market for some reason but if you go to this link

http://www.1mobile.com/foxfi-341284.html

and download it to your pc, and then transfer the file to they sd card on your phone using your computer, I put it right under the dcim folder i just pasted it right onto the file when viewing the sim files through my computer and then open the file it will be called com.apk, your phone may tell you it cannot install the file due to security, you just have to allow your phones security to install it.... all good and it works... I also recommend making a back up of com.apk (foxfi) because who knows when you wont be able to find it anymore.... I say get it all over the web.........

WiFi Tether works. Just have to go in settings and change device profile. Choose the one that says ICS/JB wlan0. Works great for me! You do have to be rooted, though. I forget that my phone is, because I am completely stock, just rooted.

jamiejo830
12-10-2012, 01:12 AM
Just from personal experience, no pro here.... FoxFi stopped working some time ago for me. You did not need rooted for it. An update along the way must have disabled it from working, is my guess. So, I tried WiFi Tether.... It works, but needs root. Wrong thread, technically... But just thought it might help someone looking for a working option.

jamiejo830

If you are looking for easy, search odin stock root. You literally plug in your phone, hit start, then you are rooted. They have options that wipe your phone clean and ones that preserve your data. Your phone remains stock, just rooted. Seems like the most stable to me. I have tried many roms on many phones. Stock always is most stable, in my opinion.
