Hi,
I'm assuming obviously Sprint checks credit when you sign the contract but do they check it periodically within 2 years?

How good your credit has to be?

Sprint only checks your credit once, when you first sign up for service. If your credit is adequate at that point, you get a normal account; if not, you can be placed on a spending limit (ASL). If you show a good payment history (12 months of on-time payments, I believe), your account will be changed to a normal account. I do not know what the minimum credit score for a regular (non-ASL) account though.

I signed up with Sprint several years ago for the first time. At the time my credit was good enough to get 5 lines, no activation fees, and charging to my account. I left for a couple years, then came back.

When signing up the second time I thought for sure I would be turned down for credit.....nope. Apparently my old info was still in the system and the CSR used that credit info to activate my account.

Only problem now is I can't leave Sprint! LOL. Pretty sure my credit won't hold up for squat at another carrier. Oh well, I'm happy with Sprint.

Good credit or bad credit, the pre-paid plans are offering great deals. The sweet stuff is they have unlimited plans at significant discounts to the post paid carriers (see Boost, Straight Talk, etc etc).

I never got a credit check when I applied for mine, not even a deposit, but I signed up for the SERO plan which maybe was a bit different, they didn't even pull a soft inquiry.

They check every new customer unless you signed up and you already had a phone or you paid full price for the phone up front. They may not have mentioned it but if you gave them you socialist security number you can bet they did. It costs them fractions of a cent to check someone. If you were in business and handing out a $200+ device you would check too.

For the most part I don't think the credit standards for cell phone companies are that high. They just want to make sure they are going to get their money back for the phone they fronted you. If you have really bad credit, buy a used phoned and go in and try to activate it, I bet they will activate it without blinking.

I had horrible credit and they gave me a phone but I did have a credit limit of $125. With a Sero plan I never came close to going over. A year later they sent me a thank you letter for being a good customer and removed my limit.

Yeah, that would be the way to go if I wasn't happy. I've had no problems with service or customer service so far............so not going anywhere anyway. :tu:

They do not make a traditional inquiry like a credit card company would, they use a credit agency that apparently bases their decision on factors including your FICO score.

Don't believe you can't go... I thought I couldn't either and I am approved with T-Mobile and AT&T as well. Sprint put me on a no deposit, account spending limit of $150 per line type account for up to 4 lines... T-Mobile let me get three lines with no deposit, no spending limit, and up to $500 for each device split into 20 payments on Even More Plus... AT&T approved me for a normal account with individual or family lines and they do not say a certain amount of lines but the rep tried for five and I was approved to do it in the store. I didn't take him up on the offer just yet since all I need is one. I am currently with AT&T with no deposit, no limits.

I am a recent college grad and do not have stellar credit to say the least.

I check my credit report every month, they pulled no hard or soft inquiry, I did not already have a phone, I thought it was weird too, but the rep told me at the time SERO does not require a credit check and zero deposit but a year before that they wanted $500 for one line from me, and did pull a hard at that time.. oh well I'm not complaining.

Well to pull your credit score they must pull your credit report, maybe because a year before that they pulled it and never needed another one, the first pull showed right away but never showed another pull.. I just think it was something to do with the SERO account, plus they wanted $500 for one line, applied again with that sero and got five lines with zero deposit. hehe

At least Sprint gives your deposit back after a year.
When I joined DirectTV they wanted a $300 deposit which I went ahead and gave, only to find out that the $300 deposit is "non refundable"!

As with another post I had to put down a deposit of $100 and had a $150 spending limit. After close to a year they upped it to a $400 spendling limit when I added a data line and then a few months after that my spendling limit was removed.

With the number of active cell phones in the country and EVERYONE holding one when you drive through that part of town where you pray to God you don't break down and NEVER venture to take that shortcut after dark, you know their qualifying standards are very low. Maybe there are a lot of ppl who have to make deposits or go prepaid, I dunno. But I can surely see the logic by taking other factors into account than just raw credit score. Things such as time on job, length of time at current residence, maybe the cell companies share other customer behavior details you don't see on a credit report. Who knows. But it sure sounds like there are other factors to determine account eligibility.

Between all the prepaid companies and the various credit requirements of post paid services, you would be hard pressed to find someone who could not get a cell phone. Page Plus will activate any "clean ESN" verizon phone to its prepaid network that runs on the Verizon towers, AT&T customers find out how to get an iPhone on "Go phone" service easily, etc.

Then you have the Cricket and MetroPCS customers who pay for their device and the month of service in advance. If they are late paying, their service is simply shut off. Many people on those services get Sprint phones flashed to their carrier and would appear to the casual observer to have Sprint service.

As long as a person has money and the means to pay for their service, their are multiple options available to even the worst credit customer!
