View Full Version : Will Pre "SEP/EPRP-Only" change once Verizon gets it?

Yes, I know the "No Pre on SERO" topic has been discussed ad nauseam (along with the Instinct series), but it seems the general consensus is that despite Sprint's "they use more data than unlimited, so they need the new plans" line, the real reason they have the SEP/EPRP requirement is that they are both Sprint-exclusive phones (and thus Sprint doesn't have to worry about people leaving for the same phone on another carrier). This rule of thumb seems to be confirmed by the availability of the Touch Pro2 on SERO (as opposed to those that said "no new smartphones on SERO," although the jury is still out on the Hero).

Verizon has been claiming they'll have the Pre in early 2010 ever since the Pre was released. This caused a much-reported brouhaha about how long Sprint's exclusivity is, with Verizon saying 6 months and Dan Hesse saying "it's not 6 months, but through the end of the year" (paraphrased), which all happened in June (aka, the same length of time).

Is there any chance that Sprint will lift the SEP/EPRP requirement for the Pre once Verizon gets it?

I wouldn't get my hopes up. What Sprint has said basically is that these phones are "always" connected to the internet. Constantly sending and receiving data where tp2 does not do that.(Even though I don't think the original Instinct does either).

That seems to be their argument and I don't see them bending on this. But ya never know.

Read yesterday someone over at ppcgeeks indicated he received an email from sprint that the Pre is now available on SERO plans.

Can't remember the exact details of why he emailed them etc, just wasn't paying attention. But the response was, "it's available now".

Which apps on the Instinct/Pre/Hero require constant internet access exactly? Wouldn't that also be a battery drain and if so couldn't you turn that feature off?

Just trying to figure out why they continue to allow WinMo phones on SERO but not the Pre or Hero.

Haven't used it myself but my understanding how it works is synergy updates your friends from the web automatically. Such like if a facebook friend changes picture then it will update from your phone also.

I'd bet this is correct and would like to say... keep this in perspective people.

These new phones are pretty kewl, but it's a very good question to ask "do I really need this?" No matters how big the screens are, seeing whats on the browser isn't easy. Yes you can zoom in and out but you have to pan around a screen that's almost impossible to see first.

And how often do your friends do facebook updates? How many do you have pictures with their voicemail? I know what they look like, I don't need to see a picture ;)

Do you really need push email? I don't that's for sure. It would be nice to have, but it's certainly not needed.

In the end, imho, it's just a phone. I like having one that does the basic phone functions as it should, not one that you have to change the battery every day cuz the screen is so big and it's always connected getting... nothing of any importance ;)

Regards, just my .02, rant off ;)

Damn logic! But you are correct. My Touch does everything for me and actually runs very reliably. Which is why I won't give up SERO for any phone.

Sounds like my situation is a little bit different from yours. My 2+ year-old Mogul is showing its age (becoming more unstable, keys beginning to not work reliably, etc) and will probably need to be replaced in the near future.

As a soon-to-be unemployed (again, 2nd time in as many years) airline pilot, I can't afford any plan more expensive than my SERO (contrary to popular opinion, we don't make much; we're lucky to make better than $20k our first year) and I need all of the minutes and unlimited data that it provides because of living on the road (I need minutes to stay connected with family and friends who are halfway across the country from where I'm stationed, data for my couple of gmail accounts (personal and work-related), data to look up weather and news on the net at times that pulling out a laptop would be impractical, and data/gps for Google Maps to help me find places to eat near my hotel when I stay in cities I haven't been to before). Oh, and my friend are on Facebook constantly.

So, clearly, I need a good, SERO-capable smartphone to stay connected while on the road. What are my options?

Non-WinMo Palms (Treo, Centro): Ancient PalmOS is a non-starter with me (and the web browsers aren't that good)

Blackberries: Don't care for them that much and can't afford to pay extra for BIS

ACE/Snap: I've had non-touchscreen Windows Mobile phones before and wouldn't go back

Touch Diamond: No keyboard, older model, and same price as the Pre

Touch Pro: Never really cared for this model and at $299 after discounts, might as well get the Touch Pro2

Touch Pro2: Nice phone, would probably really like it, but $350, are you kidding me?!

HTC Hero: Again, probably a pretty nice phone (and a deal at $180), but I'd rather have a hardware keyboard

Palm Pre: Nice design, keyboard (would prefer landscape, but still), high-quality WebOS, and actually one of the cheapest options at $150. Only problem is that they won't let me have it on SERO, hence this thread.

So, like I said, it seems our needs are a bit different. If you can get by with a basic phone, great for you, but I need a good smartphone to replace my dying Mogul.

I find myself using a phone or my ipod touch more and more for surfing the web actually. Idkw but atm its just more fun to do on and quicker not having to load up a computer.

That said you are absolutely right these are "luxury" phones that they are limiting to the plans so if you honestly want the phone you need to pay for it. Its kinda harsh thing for Sprint to do to their long term customers but fact is they were apparently not making enough money and needed an overhaul and this is what came to be.

Btw your right about battery my Pre died today. But it was at 70% when I left for work. I did not use it a whole lot though so its a shame that stuff dies so fast.

I must say that is a debocle. Dumb phones are getting smarter and smarter and I actually think a dumb phone can perform all those options adequetly. Although it has been a while since I have used one. Someone else on here could shed some light possibly a lotus or rant could serve your needs.

Could also try free bis for a blackberry? Threads going around it is possible even though I have not tried. Used a blackberry once and it was not for me so traded for the Treo.

Next few months we will get more of a feel for what Sprint will be doing with this plan. So far 2 maybe 3 phones blocked from it.(All Iphone esque phones which is my theory is why they are hiking prices) but when pixi launchs we should know more of what they are thinking.

Heard a cpl reasons as to why they are hiking prices but it would be nice if they would specify to us which will be available. The Pixi is nice looking phone but update to centro, no wi-fi, etc it is no power hitter smartphone and I don't know anyone who might think that could be worth $70+ a month.

Problem with it is one of the responses from Sprint like I said above is the constant sending of data and Pixi with webos will do that. So I will be excited to see what they do there tbh.

My Pre used just over a gig last month btw so its not as "over the top" intensive as they would love you to believe.

If you can deal with a touch-only phone, then Diamond, used again for about $150.

In any case, I would definitely get a phone with Wifi. Many times on the road you'll be able to get Wifi where you may not have Sprint data. Also you can use Skype and have very cheap voice, to supplement the minutes on your SERO plan.

Plenty of Sprint TP's on craigslist and ebay and these forums now, with the TP2 out...

Also learn about custom ROMs if you don't already know about them. For starters, put the TP on a Mighty ROM 4 or 6. Much better than the stock Sprint ROM...

What about the Pixi on SERO?

Pixi on SERO remains to be scene.

To answer the OP:

I seriusly doubt they will change the requirement. Even when Verizon gets it Sprint is still going to be the cheaper option, even with the ED requirement. Yes, it is always going to irritate the SERO users, I know I was. But in the end it is not that big of a deal to Sprint. I can see Sprint doing away completely with SERO sooner than later. It seems the group is getting more and more vocal about not being able to get the phones they want, so I can certainly see Sprint just saying to heck with it and not renew SERO contracts.

IDK I hope they change it. They say they want to market the Pixi to the younger crowd and it is sub $100 so I'm hoping they let SERO users use it.

It would be nice to be able to use the Pixi, Pre, etc. with sero, but I doubt Sprint will allow that. Now it appears that the sero plans are NOT getting the new "Any Mobile" feature. The included any mobile to mobile may have saved you minutes, but it's only free if you are not roaming. That can add up quickly, if you're not sure you are roaming. Good luck!

My FAQ on "anyMobile" should answer any questions about that :)

SERO can activate the TP2, so it's not like they are restricting all PDA's. It can also activate the Treo Pro and the HTC Snap.

When Verizon gets the Pre, maybe Sprint will come up with a $30 data add on for the "select" devices. It still wouldn't be on "SERO" per say as you would have to pay the "buy up" no different than someone on an old plan with free data and unlimited texting. When it comes to Verizon, maybe thats when something will change, if it ever will....

But for $60 total you might as well get the $59.99 EPRP plan.

But with the addon you could always get rid of addon and change phone and be back down to the best phone plan available. If you move off its gone for good.
