Sprint has 51% ownership in Clearwire, the new company that was formed to put out the xohm/wimax network for sprint, it is already up and running in baltimore, being tested in portland, and is coming to atlanta in the summer. reight now they have a functioning aircard that works on 3g/4g it switches when it finds service. This aircard is only sold in baltimore right now, but is coming soon for other areas. Theere will be 4g capable phones in the future, dont know when but in America, Sprint will have the fastest mobile broadband speed. Wimax has already been released and out for some time in other countries like Russia, Korea, Japan. After 4g is out though, we will have competitors coming out wiht similar services. Verizon and other companies have already talked about implementing LTE chips in thier devices to allow 4g access. So in short terms- Faster Mobile Broadband IS coming.

It is something that is going to put Sprint over the top compared to any other network that's what it is. It is going to bring tons of people to Sprint more than likely and definitely keep people here. Now we just need to get our CS under control and we will be good to go.

It would take too long to explain it all. 4G (fourth generation) is mostly about data speeds.

Here are some links to Sprint's info about 4G.

As mentioned by someone else, LTE and WiMAX are different types of 4G depending on the carrier. In S.Korea 4G is called WiBro (wireless broadband).

Other than Sprint go here:

my bad the last thing ive heard is they are still testing. On the website you still cant purchase the data card that has 4g on it unless you are from the baltimore area. does the website say Portland also??? South Korea by the way---- THE ENTIRE country IS WIMAX or WIBRo even in the mountains. You always have a wireless internet connection. America is not ready for that technolgy there are still people here that think they are entitled to something FREE from the cell companies. In Korea nothing is subsidized, you want a badass phone-- you have to pay for it, You want wireless broadband- you have to pay for it. Here in America people are still going into the stores asking for free phones and cheap stuff. Thats why the technology is so advanced over there. THEY are willing to PAY for technology.

It's not Sprint WiMax in Portland. It's Clearwire.

http://www.clear.com/

Which, I am sure you know is 51% owned by Sprint. Sprint can still offer their Sprint branded WiMax here though if they so wish.

Sprint Wimax is Clearwire. Clearwire is Sprints Wimax no?

Yeah. It's all the same. Just branded differently.

I have tested it at a Blazers game (they had a booth out front).

It's nice and all but coming from a 20MBPS FiOS connection nearly everything seems slow.

I wish they offered day passes for their service.

Clear does offer day passes... at least according to their site (http://www.clear.com/shop/mobile_internet.php). 24 Hour Pass... $10/day. Unless you were specifically referring to getting a day pass through Sprint instead of through Clear.

Well, you need to live in an area that offers Verizon FiOS internet service. However, that's a different thread.

Will any of our existing cell phones be able to take advantage of this faster speed for the internet, sprint TV, etc? Or will we need new phones?

None of the current devices are 4G compatible.

As I've stated before, there are already 350+ active WiMax sites in DFW. Since the merger, Clearwire just is not guaranteeing them or supporting them. If you have a 4G aircard, it will work here.
