all the new phones have 2.0 --- rant, highnote, the m520 is out of style, being more than a year old, also the lotus has 2.0, hell even nextel has a phone that has 3.1 .. Why 1.3??? it makes it cheap....

I don't find it all that ugly. I just don't know why Sprint bothers with 1xRTT phones. Kids will like it because it looks like a smartphone. But even kids are all about the youtube on their phones these days. I think it's crazy not to include EVDO on all new phones. Sprint has a really good EVDO footprint, why not use it?

cheaper phones, i think since they dont have a FREE phone on the market, they have to package these crap phones that sell real cheap. These arent the best phones in the world, but are introductory phones, like the rumor, cobra and supra. cheap cheap cheap... sad thing is, we will end up selling a ton of these phones, and then when a customer asks us why thier phone sucks, we have to tell them its because they chose a phone that is tier 1.

there's always room for an inexpensive, entry-level messaging phone in the lineup. not everyone needs/wants (or can afford) all the bells and whistles. i hear verizon's blitz sells quite well.

That's the whole idea. Cheap, cheerful, easy to buy, and basic.

Sanyo put a 1.3 in the eclipse too.

As others have said, there is a market for an inexpensive phone with a qwerty.

Dan

Maybe its a cheap phone because the economy is in the toilet and parents who used to spoil their kids with expensive toys cant now. Since texting is becoming popular here (about 10 years after Asia it seems) the carriers are trying to profit from it.

actually I WANT that phone. Nice screen candy bar form factor and its blue and its sanyo (love sanyo phones still have my 6000 and 6200) but the lack of EVDO is a deal breaker for me. I won't give up my original sero plan for any phone :-)

Hell if they made a color screen 6200 with Bluetooth and EVDO I would drop the fancy phones in a heart beat. I could even live without camera and mp3 player etc.. just give me at least 30-40mb internal memory for my mp3 ringers and such and I would be totally happy.

I really loved that phone. They actually DID make a color screen version but it was a GSM phone for the asian market. I was never able to get one or find a picture of one or anything.

actually with sero, you can go back and forth from EVDO to Rxtt on a sero. just no BB with BIS services.

Hmm I was told I can not that I would have to have a new plan. Now whats this about black berry. are you saying I can not get a blackberry for my sero plan? I have no need for "blackberry" specific functions like "push" mail etc.. is that optional? This is important because I was about to buy an 8830.

Not according to the Exec Services person I encountered (Lori) when trying to move from a Sanyo SCP-7050 (1xRTT) to a Sanyo Pro-700 (EvDO) when the 7050 broke.

She absolutely insisted that if the move was made across the 1xRTT/EvDO line I would lose SERO because the codes were no longer in the system and could not be re-entered, etc.

If you want to see the details of that (http://forums.buzzaboutwireless.com/baw/board/message?board.id=Plans&thread.id=1957), they are on Sprint's BuzzAboutWireless site.

Actually I did this with both of the 7050s on my line (went to the PRO-700s). It only took a couple minutes. Just make sure they put you on the "SERO F&F 1250/Unlimited DC" plan, not the regular SERO plan. I've seen some people switch to a DC capable phone and pay the $10 a month for the DC add-on when it is actually supposed to be included in SERO for free.

If done before they removed all SERO codes from the system, that was no problem, now that they have removed all the SERO codes, the system will no longer accept them as new entries per the folks at Sprint who should know.

(That also means even trying it now can mean if they attempt a change and they can't enter the new code, they also cannot enter the code for the plan one came from, and one can't go back... Again per the folks at Sprint who should know.)

Camera I can live with or without. (I carry a miniature 8.1M camera on my belt, and it does better than any phone.)

I'd prefer a black phone, but I suspect once I see the blue in person it will be sufficiently "reserved" to pass in business.

For my particular uses, plan, and needs, the 1xRTT will be good enough.

Quite honestly, assuming this handset has the old "Sanyo Quality," it should meet the actual needs of a large number of people.

It's not a "Smart Phone" it's a low-end voice and txt device, purposed designed to meet those needs.

Actually the 8400 camera had a issue where some pics turned out green. I understand it's low end but I think a mid or high end model would sell well to. Why not make both??

My daughter wants this for her 8th graduation in june. The down side is no mp3 player, no memory card slot. She is used to having those features. She has had many phones since I got her on my account almost 5 years ago. Nokia 3200, lg-pm 225, fusic, upstage, m-520, and now rant.

I went to sprint store yseterday to have tech look at one of my phones and played around with this phone. The pink is very pretty but the phone is very basic. I was gung ho about getting it but now I don't think I will. It is an ok phone for teens who want to text alot but not for us tech savy people who like features.

So long as folks understand this isn't a "Smart Phone" or even a "Feature Phone" and is simply a basic phone with the addition of a QWERTY keyboard for easier texting, I don't see a problem with it.

That happens to be what some folks want instead of a portable MP3 player/postage stamp TV/web browser/digital camera/video camera/GPS/radio/PDA/walkie-talkie/gameboy/digital storage system/status symbol.

Yes, this unit has some rudimentary features like a low-rez camera, a limited web browser, and GPS, but for the most part it is a texting phone and that's all it is really intended to be.

Personally, it has more features than I need, but it is not as overloaded with features as most of the units the carriers are pushing so hard.

The most important feature of all I have yet to hear anyone even mention: Is is a good PHONE?

If it's performance as a phone is sub par, then none of the other features count at all - and this applies to all those Smart Phones and Feature Phones, too.

Has anyone noticed that some of the "High End" phones are lousy at simply making a quality phone call? Have super-short battery life/talk times because of all the other "features" stuffed in? Have poor call quality? Have low signal sensitivity?

I have friends who's superphones make them nearly unintelligible, while I have other friends with simple phones who sound great.

For me the first criteria is how does it perform as a phone, and if it can't do that well I don't go any farther.

Possibly, just possibly, this might be a unit I will consider.

We'll see. :fingers:

well its a sanyo which usually means top of the line call quality and signal acquisition.

add mp3 memory slot and evdo (plan limitation) and I would be very interested in it and it is a good looking phone. but I like my toys :-)

Well, I stopped by a local corporate Sprint store this morning and looked at the SCP-2700. Both the pink and the blue are decent looking units, and feel better in hand than I expected. The keyboard was MUCH better than I expected, and the call quality was good.

The speakerphone seemed a little weak from what I am used to, which was a disappointment, 'cause that will mean probably marginal audio levels on the turn-by-turn GPS. :(

Other than that, this is a unit I would seriously consider as a basic voice/txt handset.

I actually picked up this phone last Thursday. I have to say so far so good, it pretty much what you would expect from a sanyo phone in terms of quality. I am coming from from Sanyo 4930 which I must say was the best phone I've had on sprint.

The phone is really basic, texting is great on the phone and the menus are really responsive and has loud ringers. The call is really good, loud and clear but the speaker phone is not as loud as I would have hoped it would be. This is really a great phone for teens or for anyone who doesn't want all the bells and whistles. The camera is nothing special, really basic zoom with no flash. I don't care much for a camera on a phone so it wasn't really a big deal for me. The phone has a really decent battery life, you could get by whole weekend without charging the phone. I purchased the phone out right and paid $230, I plan to test this phone out for the 30 day trial period before I make any decisions.
Because of the lack of edvo I would give this a phone 8/10.

Well, Wboo, the 4930 was probably the best quality unit Sprint ever had in service as far as call quality, and the 2700 even coming close to it in that regard is both good and surprising.

The 4900 and 4930 also had the loudest Sprint speakerphones, so I'm not surprised that the 2700 doesn't match up to one of those, but I was hoping for at least as good as the 7050 I have now.

Doesn't seem the speaker in the 2700 has the output level required to actually support turn-by-turn GPS instructions in a moving car. :(

Keep us informed on how the 2700 works out for you!

the first thing that stands out about this phone is how LIGHT it is. the keyboard is fairly decent when typing. the buttons feel funky but i think you would get used to it. the camera isn't terrible for 1.3MP so it does its job. the sound is decent and the speakerphone is much better than the katana lx, but that's not saying much. for $30 it's a nice phone for kids.

there is a bug that i found so far - you can't type in mini.opera.com in the web browser. when you hit enter, the second "i" goes away leaving it mni.opera.com. and i THINK there's another bug when you push the "message" button. it brings up the messaging list, but starts at "2" instead of "1 Voicemail".
