Sprints 4G is Xohm aka WiMax. Currently marketed as Clear Wireless in some areas.

Verizon, at&t, T-Mobile are going with a technology called LTE.

Xohm is now part of clearwire's new Clear...

On sprints site they show it being Sprint 4G, under there coverage map, so my bet is they will be marketing it as Sprint 4G.

Xohm will be adsorbed by Clear when Clearwire gets there back end system updated and what not...

Hopes this helps its a little confusing..

Tmobile and ATT will Prob go to LTE in the future but nothing right now big red is really pushing hard to have LTE out soon

Why not? Why pay to roll out 3G everywhere when you can just jump right to 4G? No need in paying twice, and the customers end up with a very robust wireless network.

As far as what it will be called, every company will have a name to call it. People talk about EVDO as power vision on sprint, I believe verizon calls it "V Cast" but thats just a marketing name. EVDO Rev 0 and Rev A are just indications of a standard used like wifi wireless b, wireless g and wireless n. Your typical customer doesn't care what name they give it.

On the LTE side and even WiMAX currently and years to follow they will be a Data network, not the Standard Data and Voice.

So if Tmobile was to deply 2G,3G,and4G the fourth would just be for data, and with the speeds and the cost effectiveness of going with a HSPA+ evolution there is no point just yet to go to LTE...

Also keep in mind they dont have the spectrum to do it also, the only reason the have a 3g is due to buying more spectrum in a diff freq.

Careful. T-Mobile has designed their 3G right along with LTE.

Sprint 4G it is.

sprint news release (http://newsreleases.sprint.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=127149&p=irol-newsArticle_newsroom&ID=1269807)

...Sprint 4G offers turbo-charged mobile broadband – peak downlink speeds of up to 12 Mbps in Baltimore today and average downlink speeds of 2-4 Mbps – three to five times faster than today’s 3G service from any carrier.

Sprint plans to deploy Sprint 4G service in many markets in 2009, including:

Atlanta
Honolulu
Charlotte
Las Vegas
Chicago
Philadelphia
Dallas
Portland
Fort Worth
Seattle

where Clear goes, Sprint 4G goes.

and may I add. No carrier has "rolled 3g" into all areas yet.

Yes, 4G is "data only" but that doesn't stop you from having a device that does 4G data as well as 2G voice. Keeping voice and data separate may be a smart move anyways with possibly allowing a voice call at any time to just simply put your data session on hold, or even allow for both at the same time.

I can see a day when sprint will have PDA's that are 4G devices with the 3G network they are running now being used for just voice and sms, and reverting to the slower 3G network for data when 4G is unavailable.

Yeah that will be a great day for us... It make sense for sprint to do 4G,3G hardware..

Especially since "Clear" will be paying for the network build out and not sprint

And if you prohibit your 3G customers from actually *using* it as such, then there is also no point to upgrading 3G yet... (viz AT&T's decision to disallow iPhone Slingplayer users from using 3G cuz it *might* load down AT&T's high speed, high capacity 3G network too much... it just might... even though it is such a good 3G network...)
