Can the Safari browser (the same one used in the iPhone) be used in the webOS of the Palm Pre? Does anyone know?

No, but the browser in the Pre is webkit based. Just like Safari and the Android browser.

What does it mean if it is webkit based? I have used the Safari browser and loved it's ability to load every bit of a web page just like a computer browser. Is that what it means? Will the webOS browser be so advanced that it will be just like you are on your home computer?

Yes. It will be a full HTML browser just like your home computer.

Safari is only found in the iPhone and iPod Touch models.

Awesome. That is the most important improvement that Palm could have done to their phones. iPhone finally has some competition. Are there any phones besides the iPhone and the G1 that has a browser as good as the Pre's?

Well, that's a matter of opinion. I don't think any other smartphone browser can beat iPhone or G1 out of the box, but with downloads like Opera Mobile and Skyfire things are pretty close for WM devices.

The Blackberry browser is not too shabby either.

Yeah Skyfire, Opera, and Opera mobile and mini can pretty much render a page as it should be rendered. I use them all on my HTC Touch.

Webkit is simply a rendering engine that is open source. Google Chrome is also built on Webkit.

Opera on my old Sprint Diamond (out of the box) was better than the Safari on my iPod touch. Only thing it couldn't do well was open more than 2 pages at a time which safari handles fairly easily. That's the one thing I REALLY miss about having the Diamond - the web browser/screen combo was top notch. *sigh*. The Pre needs to hurry its ***** up

Come on now. Let's get realistic here. Why would anyone want to run a piece like Safari (Apple) on the Pre? How about giving the Pre's browser a shot. Palm is not going to create a device OS based on HTML/JavaScript etc and not have full rendering of websites.

I agree with what was posted about using the other browsers and the webkit base. That seems to be the wave of the future from what I have seen.

I am sorry, but like the iPhone or not it's hard to deny the fact that Safari is at the top of the mobile browser game. While I agree with give the Pre browser a chance Safari is hardly a "piece".

^^I concure, the safari browser is by far the best I've used on a mobile device. Granted Opera on my Diamond does a decent job, but its still not the same. I am looking forward tho to the browser on the Pre, as its webkit based as well and looks to render pages better than safari did!!!

^Have you tried the Android browser?

I think the only thing that makes the Opera browser "better" in some regard, is the interface - the ability to pinch, etc. Which is something WinMo can't do.

I agree, Multi-touch support on the phone helps out a lot in making the browser easy to navigate. Part of the browser is the navigation (with your finger gestures), etc. Support for multi formats also helps too, so the browser can render the pages correctly.

most of that is because of Adobe not providing windows mobile a decent flash plugin.

Yeah I did, I had a g1 for a little bit, and found it decent, but frustrating. I think my biggest complaint about it was that it was already zoomed in on the page instead of showing the entirety of the page, and there really wasn't an easy way to zoom in and out like w/ safari or w/ opera on my diamond.

Oh that has changed. Now you just long press the minus button and it shows the entire page.

The more I read about how good the browser in the Diamond is, the more I'm thinking that it (Diamond) will be the phone I end up with (provided the Pre doesn't require a SEP plan). Now how about this comparison. Diamond's browser vs. the Instinct's browser. Which one does better job, as in, a Safari-like job?

Doesn't the Diamond just use Opera? I'm using Opera 9.5 in my Touch. I think you can load it on to pretty much any HTC device.

Diamond does use Opera, actually all new HTC devices (running Windows Mobile) have Opera Mobile 9.5 built in, and yes you can load Opera Mobile onto any windows mobile devices, Right now on my Touch Pro the version of Opera Mobile I have came from the Touch Pro 2
