View Full Version : [Pre] Poll - Sooner with bugs, wait and no bugs

So I wanted to put out a poll, since at this time I'm somewhat anxious to ditch my Pearl and move on to another phone, that being the Pre.
So I thought, would you accept the Pre with less features (OTA updates - Wifi or Wireless options - to save on those who don't have data), WITHOUT COMPLAINTS TO SPRINT; let's say:
* Calendar/Email/Notes
* Web Browsing
* Sprint services (SMS, MMS, Talk)
* Application Catalog (Forget if this is the name or not)
Or would you rather wait for the full functionality and features that the Pre is promising?

I'd already posted about this.
I would gladly sign a waver that I do not get any support until it's full release, if I can buy the phone now. As long as I can at least make and receive calls, I'll wait for OTA updates to fix anything else.
They would never do this though, because some jackasses that had it early would start negative buzz about things not working right or bugs.

Good call on that Meat. I guess it's just time to re-hash some of the old stuff day!!! I recall that same thing. I can't believe how much interest I've had all of a sudden out here on this forum since the Pre was announced. Heck, a co-worker just picked up the instinct - still curious on that- but he loves it. I'm looking for something that I can love to use as well!!

I voted to wait. I like my Instinct a whole lot, but I think I'll love the Pre. So, while I'd like it right now...I do have a phone that I enjoy until the Pre comes out.
I'll wait patiently till June 1st. After that, I'll be getting flustered. http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/images/smilies/atwitsend.gif

Would gladly sign a waiver as well. If it didn't work well enough, I could always ESN swap with my old phone until the proper OTA updates came out. Most people don't get that though and would have a conniption fit if every little thing on the phone didn't work perfectly.
I've always thought that cell phone company's should implement some sort of beta testing groups for new devices that came out. Say a couple hundred existing customers could buy it at full price, and you could devise a method of creating a "log" of sorts. This log would automatically be sent back to Palm/Sprint/whoever it was about crashes, times the phone was turned on and off, amount of usage, dropped calls etc. You could even have the users add to the log about issues they had. I'm guessing that doing this might open you up to negative public criticism, but what better way to test out a phone than to let it run for months with "normal usage" - take a month to fix the issues, and then do the full release.
In my perfect world anyway............:tu:

Why pay? If you are doing the testing and helping a company then why pay? Yes we love the Pre we would do that, however, what if Sprint came to you and asked you to test Sprints first android phone? Would you turn them down? Who knows there could be so much radiation coming out of the phone that it will create a second head on your body. Just being stupid here.
But why pay? That would be the perfect world or and Sprint pay for your service during the time you are testing. OK now that would be perfect for me. Ahhhhh (Dreaming...)

Hello, I just found this site today, and I've been a Sprint customer for 12yrs. How do you become a Sprint phone tester?

Because Sprint knows that there are enough nerds out there that want to play with new toys that are willing to pay.

I disagree - there are PLENTY of "nerds", phone-whores, technology junkies etc that would love to be on the cutting edge and first adopters/testers - in my opinion anyway.

Um, that's pretty much exactly what I was saying.
If sprint ever allowed regular customers to beta test, they sure as hell don't need to give the phones out for free. There are plenty of nerds that are willing to pay to be the first to have a gadget, and Sprint knows that.

Oh yeah - sorry, I misread your post. I thought you said there weren't enough nerds. :frustrate My internet forum reading comprehension skills are diminishing with every day that I search for Pre news and getting nothing.

i'm not in a phone crunch.... i'll wait.... who wants to deal with a broke phone....
I voted to wait. I'm surprised more people don't want to wait. Especially the way some trash a device for not being perfect out of the gate. I hope Palm does take their time. The Pre may be a make or break phone for Palm to make a real dent into the iPhone's market share. I like the idea of the iPhone, but I need a tactile keyboard I can actually touch...

I'm torn - like the excitement of updating my aged Katana and making the switch from PDA+phone to smartphone, but wouldn't like the hassle of bugs, etc. [Excitement may win out, especially if I can sell the idea to the boss for finally paying for my phone.]

They're still releasing updates for the Storm, imagine if VZW and BB waited 'till now to release the phone?
Maybe they would have less total sales....
Maybe they would have less total returns....
Maybe if If's and But's were Candy and Nuts....

sad thing is that even if it is near bug free, there will probably be a SW update due to something that they forgot w/i the first 6 months so i day you damned if you do and damned if you dont

Exactly... damned if you do wait and damned if you don't wait. So why wait!?!? The idea of a bug-free launch is unobtainable. All they're doing by saying they're holding off until there are no bugs is setting themselves up to be nitpicked to death when the launch finally gets here. THERE WILL BE BUGS EITHER WAY... give us the phone now.

OK, this is now officially my favorite rationalization for getting it Day 1!

Either way, Sprint/Palm will loose.
Release it now with bugs: People will cry and be quick to bash Sprint and Palm for releasing a buggy phone
Release it later with no bugs: People will cry and be quick to bash Sprint and Palm for taking so long to launch the phone (it's already happening right now on this board)

Any provider and manufacture of cell phones always looses with some people because you can never satisfy everyone, everytime, and everywhere.
Human nature kicks in. People by nature love to complain.

Have you ever worked on development? I am glad you haven't.
First the Pre is not "delayed" and there is no hang up due to "bugs". it is in development. the question is not bugs but implementing and testing features. Testing for bugs is more something that will be done in April.
secondly bugs and problems come in numbers and degrees of severity. handsets have been released and recalled recently due to connectors causing fire hazard.
There will be bugs, but the question is: do you want three to five mild ones, or 25 with five severe ones?
Some people here have been totally spun around by 100% false release date rumors of February or March due to demonstrably confusion with the Pre. Handsets are typically release at the very very end of windows -- and often after. It is an possibility we will see it in April, but don't start yelling and stomping until July.
