so it looks like the palm pre no longer has PAM (phone as a modem) available to allow you to teather your phone to your laptop to the internet.

an option i use ALLLLL the time with my mogul (w/o additional costs). If there is no way to do this on on the pre and its a deal breaker for me

I was REAALLLLLYYYY looking forward to this phone...#)()@(*%)@:!!! i hope i'm wrong!

Eh - nothing else to talk about - might as well be week old "news". On a related note, I'm pretty sure Sprint wants you to pay for that service (Phone as Modem) so I'm not surprised they disabled it on the Pre. (I'm sure it will be able to be hacked to use it just like you can do to WM phones). But technically that's "stealing" to use your phone as a modem if you don't pay the $50 a month add-on that is "required".

They just came out with that commercial about "I know we called it the everything plan before but now we REALLY mean Everything, everything plan for $150 a month. Until of course we come out with Wi-Max and then have to have an Everything, everything, everything plan" plan. You know....the one with good ole Dan..............oh wait, that's all of them

I doubt the option that was previously in the literature had anything to do with the way you are using it so, unless you were willing to pay for it, its presence or disappearence shouldn't affect you one way or another. There is no information on whether it will be possible to use that feature the way you currently use it, either with the base phone or through 3rd-party additions.

There is no evidence the Pre can't tether. Palm's website still lists it as a feature. It's very possible Sprint just doesn't want to advertise it, as they want to push their extra $ service.

Even if it can't tether at launch, it likely won't take very long for someone to write an app that lets it.

Well, if a 3rd-party needs to write one, it will be an interesting test to see if Palm will sign any app that doesn't crash the phone or if they will take a more selective approach.

I have never tethered a phone. How is the speed thru your PC? Is it comparable to a desktop but slightly slower?

If you mean is it comparable to your home internet connection, then that would depend on whether or not you have cable/dsl/fios/etc. If you still have dial up, then yes it would be faster. On my Touch, tethered to my laptop, I can get d/l speeds of up to 80kb/s. I think that's around the highest I've ever seen it. Usually stays around 60kb/s for me. Good enough for me for my casual surfing with my laptop.

Just to clarify -- The Palm Pre is completely capable of tethering. But it checks to see if the Phone as A Modem option is on your account, and fails to tether if you do not have that option. What's more, Sprint has decided the PAM option will not be offered on the Everything plans that are used with the Pre. So, at least for now, there is no tethering on the Pre -- even if you're willing to pay for it, Sprint doesn't want your money. Oh, they'd love to sell you a 3G card and a separate plan, though. But that makes no sense for me, as I rarely tether. I only use it on rare occasions with my Treo 650, but it has saved my butt a few times too. I am going to sorely miss tethering. I might return the Pre and wait for it to come out on Verizon where they may offer tethering.

If they even get it.

Yes, I think this is so true....most people don't want to put up with having to hack into something (not me lol)...they just want to be able to insert and go. I think that it is less people who tether than people who don't so having thousand of customer not to buy the pre vs the millions who will buy the pre...sprint is not losing in sleep or money over this...to the dude that post the original comment...sick with the mogul because it works for you.
