On the basketball court I'm trying to figure out what that dotted line means in front of the free throw. The line that intersects with dotted bottom half of the circle??
Trying to settle an argument with a friend . By the way if you find the information online could you also send me that link too.
Thanks

I honestly only think it's used to show where players can stand on a jump ball on either side of the court. I can't find anything showing this yet, but that is a good question. I thought I knew everything about basketball.

That's what I thought it was for....

Thats a great question and I found out that its called the "free throw LANE". I didnt know until I googled it, sorry cant post a link Im using opera mini no cut and paste. This is the area where a player can NOT cross until the ball makes contact with the backboard including the rim. Jordan was good for waiting for the free throw shooter to shoot and come out of nowhere and dunk it.Now lets split the cash.

We are talking about the dotted half circle below the free throw line. Not the paint.
I'm waiting to read the answer so that I can then go impress someone with that information lol. :)

Not sure but I also think it's where a jump ball is and it's dotted because it's in the paint. Here's a picture of what the OP is asking.

Sorry guys I thought he was talkin about inside the circle below the free throw line. Ive played for many years and still do but I have no clue at this moment what the DOTTED line is yet! Just when you thought you knew everthing about the sport and here comes a great question.
damn...good question....I've played since 1st grade and I still have no idea! I'm even a center and spent most of my highschool years in the "PAINT!"

Yeah maybe its dotted because its inside the paint but in jump ball situation, players stand outside of it aside from those doing the jump.
