Any idea why the name of the phone is "Pre"? Is it meant as like a "pre"-game type thing? When looking up Pre, I get Earlier; before; prior to. What is it prior to?

Guess just something out here to entertain people while waiting for some real news on the device...

From what I've heard, the pre means anticipating, it's going to know what you need before you do.
Like that feature that can figure your location and e-mail that you're going to be late to a meeting.
Either that or that something people can remember easily.

I think Palms thinking of Pre as in many more to come, this is the first iteration of their new WebOS devices

I don't think there's too much to read into it....from the Palm devices at the top of my memory, few of them have significant names...

What does treo mean?
What about T|X? E2?
Centro?
Tungsten seems like it was about the color?
Garnet?

The whole idea behind Pre is PREdicting, PREemption, PREmontion, etc...

They speak of the phone thinking ahead, like with that whole thing where you start typing and it gives you option, and more. Says stuff like that on their site.

It certainly rolls off the tongue quite well! "Palm Pre"...sounds good, doesn't it?

I'm starting to think it is for PREmature - as in we were premature in showing people the phone at CES because we're not ready to release any more information about the phone or a date and its going to be months before you see anything.

Wow and here I thought it was pronounced "pray". You learn something new every day on this site.

Hey - it could be "pray" - as in "You better pray you see it before July"

I could go on all day with these!

It's not uncommon, actually. The Samsung Instinct made a big splash at last year's CES and didn't come out until June 20th. I remember the date because I bought it on launch day. We didn't get all that much information about the phone in between, either.

And as a whole I think most would consider the Instinct a failure. Granted, it wasn't all about the delay in RELEASING the phone and had a lot to do with the phone itself, but still........just saying.

I think it was the perverbial... Iphone Killer statement that plagued the Instint not to mention the limitations that Sprint had on the unit i.e. everything plan.... I knew quite a few people that wanted to buy it last summer, but would not b/c the plan was too expensive
