Just wanted to let anyone in the Atlanta are know that, 4G is Coming!! Got confirmation today from clearwire, that May 1st is when the soft roll will start. It will start with connection cards, then follow a few months later with phones on the hard roll. So who is looking forward to this???:music::music::headbang2

...will current evdo capable cell phones be able to use the 4G? like i have a lotus so can that use it or will we have to buy a new phone?

current evdo phones are not compatible with Sprint 4G/Xohm/Clear/WiMax. the new network is primarily (at least initially) geared as a broadband connection... think of it like an alternative to DSL with devices like connection cards for laptops and modems for desktop PCs. dual mode handsets (cdma/wimax) are probably in the works. the only wimax-enabled handset that i know of at the moment is the HTC Max (http://www.yota.ru/en/htc_max_4g/main/) (gsm/wimax) on the Russian Yota network.

back on the soft roll topic, word around the net (http://www.phonenews.com/clear-now-available-in-metro-atlanta-launching-las-vegas-soon-7853/) is that Las Vegas NV will be the next city to light up with 4G/WiMax.

No only the devices that come out with the 4g radio in them will work. Currently there are none. There is a aircard we have that will connect to 3g and 4g though, as long as you have it in your area. Which thank god ATL has it now!!:headbang2

Clear Coverage page (http://www.clear.com/shop/get_clear.php) now listing Las Vegas NV along side Atlanta and Portland.

from unstrung (http://www.unstrung.com/document.asp?doc_id=177412):
Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR) is now selling WiMax services in Las Vegas ahead of an official launch this summer...

"...In advance of our full commercial launch of Las Vegas scheduled for this summer, we are now selling Clear service as part of our operational readiness activities," Clearwire spokeswoman Jennifer Morgan says. "Store openings, advertising, and other market activities will be a part of our full commercial launch, but residents of Las Vegas can now go to Clear.com and order services."

I just ordered a 2 pack - Home Unlimited and Mobile Unlimited from Clear.com. If any of you all know the Atlanta area, you know with the topography and the trees, signal strength can be a challenge. Can't wait til Tuesday to see what type of signal I get as I am in a pseudo bowl just covered with full mature trees.

I sure hope this works cause I am looking for a Comcast replacement.

UPDATE:

Just got my 2 pack today. Yeah!!!

Wait a second, was I suppose to get a signal with that? 'Cause I first hooked up the usb adaptor to my laptop and no signal. I went on the back porch and still no signal. So I drove a half a block and got signal:-(

I then came home and plugged in my home modem on the back porch and hooked the modem to my laptop. NO SIGNAL!!!! I then moved the modem to the front of the house on a window sill and still no signal.

The funny thing about all of this is that the tower is only 1/2 mile north of my house. My house is an older area of Atlanta and the trees are thick and the terrain is hilly, just what you don't want with any type of wireless signal.

I called tech support and they are sending a tech out tomorrow to take a look at the area for signal. My guess is I will end up returning my equipment and canceling service tomorrow evening. I so wanted to get Comcast out of my pocket;-)

Do any of you know if the Sprint 4G cards will now connect on the 4G network in Atlanta (since Clearwire is available here) instead of rolling back to the 3G (assuming there is a good signal)?

Thank you

Why not buy a card and if it doesn't work, take in back!

Update:

Tech came out and determined that due to tree obstruction, signal quality is affected. Well I called and place the wheels in motion for a return/refund. I must say that for each instance that I had to speak or email with a Clear CS/Tech rep I was impressed with their service. Very friendly and helpful. They can't help if ATL is full of tall pine trees;-)
