View Full Version : [Pre] Tethering/Using Phone as Modem

I've never owned a Palm phone before (just Palm Pilots) so I don't know how they handle tethering. Right now with my Touch, I can tether either by usb or by bluetooth.
What are some thoughts on whether the Pre will allow tethering?
Also, I have a family plan and both numbers show as eligible for a $150 rebate on a new phone. Does anyone know if that means I can use both upgrades or is it only one for the whole account?

Palm OS phones can tether with USB Modem or PDANet. Regarding the Pre, nothing has been announced that I know of, but I would imagine applications will be released for that purpose.
Also, rebates are phone-dependent not account-dependent, so if both show as eligible, each line can upgrade and each will receive the discount.

you can also tether straight from the phone with sprints software however you would have to pay a monthly fee, but PDAnet is only a one time fee.

Even with the unlimited everything plan?

Yep, PAM (Phone as Modem) is different from just using your phone. Your phone itself will use a lot less data in a month than you will use via a computer within a day.

I'm reading that the tethering/phone as modem feature has been removed from the Sprint feature list. Wondering whether anybody has had a chance to see if maybe tethering works with the "Classic" emulator using USB Modem or PDANet?

As of right now and of course they might come out with apps to tether (I doubt it though, seems everything plans don't include PAM) you can not use PAM on the Pre. I really doubt you will ever be able to.

I just saw this article (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124537659263030163.html?ru=yahoo#mod=yahoo_hs). So I'm wondering where are these tutorials for the Pre, and if they are really possible and easy to do..Anyone know?

It is possible but read some of the warnings that Palm has issued to others about discussing it. I would suggest not mentioning it here on SprintUsers.com since they like to stay on Sprint's good side and not break the terms of service agreements that we all sign when opening a Sprint account.
If you poke around enough in these articles you can find the info but I will link you to the warning page where it is a good place to start.

At least one plan that Pre is allowed on has PAM.
Not being able to tether is what is (or) will keep me from buying one unfortunately. My contract is up this year, I may wait to see if they change there minds, or look into switching companies when the Pre is available elsewhere. It is a shame they are trying to use the Pre to try and get people with older plans to switch to the newer ones. I think they will end up loosing people over this issue. I currently pay for PAM on my Palm Centro. I do not mind paying for the service.

I found this article about how to tether with the Palm Pre. I don't own one, so I can't test it.

It works but you might find this app easier.

Hmm, that "does" seem easier. I like it. I don't have a Pre yet, so I would LOVE to see someone here test it.

It works great. I got the version you donate for and i've been tethering for tthe past week. I have phone as modem as a free add on on my account and my internet is awesome fast. It took me a little bit to setup, but it works grrat now.

PAM as a free add-on? How'd you swing that?
I just upgraded to the Everything Data 1500 share plan and understand it's an extra charge. Weird thing is, on my old plan after signing up for PAM an additional charge never showed on the bill.

Definitely go with the donated version. I am not sure if the non-donater version is actually compatible with Web OS 1.2. The donater version wasn't but the installer has since been fixed to make it work. At least on the version you get doing a restore on the phone. That does not mean it will still work with the over-the-air release. But if it does not I am sure the author will have it working as soon as he can.
I also did the donated version. I'm a little worried with the 1.2 update coming that it will wipe this out. I had some troubles installing it the first time.

True but it does not have all the same features as the donated one. I feel $10 is well worth it for the added features. If you are interested in knowing what extra you get i would check out the website.
