View Full Version : [Pre] Arguments That webOS Applications Are Just Web Pages

I see it over and over again, in nearly ever forum, (especially on Engadget,) where iPhone groupies say that WebOS is dumb, because it requires an internet connection just to work.

Fairly aggrevating, to me. Doesn't everyone know that you can run web programs without the connection? It's just like any other programming language.

I think the confusion lies in that Apple had a bunch of "applications" that were simply portals to iPhone-screen sized web pages that gave limited functionality--and truly required a connection...

For those of you who don't understand the way WebOS's programs work, they run on the phone, natively, and DO NOT require an internet connection. Your phone will continue to work fine--and is in no way comparable to the web portal "applications" on the iPhone.

I literally see this argument every few minutes when I am browsing for Pre information.

"Lolz, you must be one of the guys who sed that that the iphone wuz stoopid bcaus of its webbased apps! now look, the webos is the hole phone like that! dum idiots!"

bah.

Just doesn't make any sense. I guess people are feeling really threatened by the Pre... but I don't see how CONSUMERS are threatened by it... perhaps they are worried that the Pre will be "cooler," and now they are stuck with [insert phone here] and just want to bash it?

Oh well.

Although I showed the Pre videos to my friend who is nuts about iPhones... and he kept saying "***?!" and "ooh--ahhh," etc... When I told him it would alert people when you are late, he nearly crapped his pants...

So I guess they aren't all hardened fanboys...

I would say most Apple/iphone user aren't fanboys, they just like the products and if it suits their needs then good for them. The ones that go on engadget and bash every other cool phone out there are the fanboys, and there are some weird people on engadget!

I think it's just natural human nature to bash something that improves on something you just invested in and wish you waited a little bit longer before purchasing. Psychologically, the iPhanboys just want to feel better about their purchase so they attack something that obviously addresses all the iPhone's weaknesses. You can't really blame them. It's like purchasing something, getting locked in a contract and having a different company develop something better, cheaper a few years later. As loyal Sprint customers, we just have to sit back, wait and relax - and flip through multitasking apps in front of the iPhanboys.

Really? Are you doing that right now?

How about now?

heh ;)

Yeah I know not all Apple users are fanboys... but I'd say that a good portion are.

I have Windows-everything... not because of loyalty--but because it does what I need, for one-third the price.

I suppose there are people who need Apple, and that's fine.

With that said... I find it funny when people bring up the "but everyone based Apple for having web-base apps!!!" -- all it does is show that they don't know what is going on, at all.

I can understand the aggravation with people making assumptions about WebOS, especially when it hasnt even been released yet (hence my amusement with those that praise it's supposed virtues). Anyone dismissing it is a fool and many of those wont even give it a fair chance when it does come out. All they are doing is potentially missing out though.

Agreed. I don't dismiss anything just becuase it's new (or overpriced.)

I tried the iPhone, but I couldn't get by with their psudo Exchange support.

Otherwise, I'd probably have one on my desk right now, instead of a Touch.

Same goes for the Pre. If it doesn't deliver on the Exchange, then it's gone.

LOL correction...

Can't say I've seen these arguments, as I don't scour the net for Pre information all that much. I'm one of those "just wait and see" kind of people instead of reading rumors and stuff. What I can say is, in reference to the OP's mention that people are saying the webOS is dumb because it requires an internet connection to work, that maybe they're saying this because many of the applications USE data pulled from the web and GPS. Perhaps they are failing to realize these are features and not functions, for lack of better terms. You could very well sync your Pre with your computer to get use these features if you don't have a data plan, it simply won't be "live."

I have to mention, though... what's the point of these people arguing this anyway? I'm sure there may be some people who purchase the Pre and don't want or need a data plan (of course there are the arguments that an SE plan will be required, so if that's true, those people are SOL) but speaking from a majority-user perspective, who buys a phone like this without a data plan anyway? And for those who do, I'm sure they are well aware of the limitations they will face without a data connection. And if they aren't aware of them, shame on them.
