View Full Version : Should I keep the Eclipse X ?

Is there anybody that really likes their Eclipse X?

If so, what is it you like versus the other choices?

Does anybody know if it scratches easily or not?

Just upgraded my wife to the Eclipse X a few days ago. Didn't do a lot of research, just based it on my respect for Sanyo (we've owned many, most recently my daughter had the original Katana, which has withstood 3 years of heavy use).

For the price we paid, I "assumed" the Eclipse would be a somewhat state of the art phone. But instead, it should really qualify as a Free upgrade type of phone in my opinion. The screen is a step backwards, and the camera stinks.

The reception seems decent (not quite as good as original Katana) and voice quality is so-so (original Katana was very good).

It doesn't show the signal strength on the front screen, at least not that I can find, which bothers me.

I'm worried that this phone might scratch easily.

I'm also not sure what alternative I'd pick for her. Maybe the Moto VE20, or the LG Lotus.

We're all going to upgrade this year, and I'm going to try to have one charger type (most likely microUSB), or maybe two types (microUSB + miniUSB).

My wife seems to like it ok. I've got the clunky clear plastic protective case on it for now, at least for the 30day period. I'm thinking if she likes it, maybe keep it, but for not much more $, the Lotus might be a decent choice.

Would really appreciate other opinions.

Hey Clyde

I will tell you that we switched over from TMob after 6 months of billing problems. I chose the Katana Eclipse X for its features, and the fact that they were offering it to us for free.

First issue, the website did not tell us the phone was backordered and we had to wait a week to get them. I know, not the phones problem, but the beginning.

We get the phones, and I call to have them all activated and our TM numbers switched. I was on the phone trying to activate my line 4 times that day. When they activated the phone, I could only receive calls and text messages. Finally got someone who knew what they were doing, so when I went home and activated the other ones, it was a breeze.

Day two. My husband calls me from his Katana and I answer on the first ring I heard. He asked me why I let it ring so many times. He heard 4 rings before the phone actually rang. So, again I call and no one can understand what I am talking about. Told me to turn off and restart.

Day three. My son texted me and I answered. He didnt get text for over 20 minutes. I called him and I heard 6 rings before voice mail and left him one to call me. An hour later, he called me and told me that his phone never rang and he just now got the vm. So I call again, and was told to turn off all phones, remove batteries for 5 minutes and then put it all back together and turn on. Fixed the problem for the first 2 -3 calls. Now its back to doing it again.

I have two telemarketers that call my phone everyday 4 times a day. And again, we took our numbers with us, so I should still be getting those calls. Nothing.

I don't know if it is the phone or the network, but I am missing calls (even though they are calling the phone doesnt ring at all), I am getting a delay in ringing, and can get no one to help me.

The phone itself to me in complicated, but I had a Slide with full keyboard, so that is my issue. My son has issues with it powering off on its own (literally) and he set the LED lights to do certain colors for certain things and they change by themselves. I think the quality of the camera stinks, and I moved my SD card from the Slide and it used up almost all memory with 20 pics????

I am on the fence with the whole thing still, but guess that I am stuck for 2 years.

Not much help I guess, but vented my issues with it.

Doesn't seem like this forum is as active as it used to be, probably a sign of the times.

One thing I notice with the Eclipse is if the snazzy LEDs are blinking to let you know there is a message waiting for you, and then someone calls long enough to register but they don't leave a message, then the "you've got a message" LED doesn't come back on. I think that's a bug.

Thanks tluvsherj for replying. You must have posted at the exact same time I was doing my second post.

I think many of the issues you describe are related to Sprint and not necessarily the phone. But some are related to the phone itself.

We have 4 phones in our family, and we notice that some ring much sooner than others, and I believe that's a matter of reception. My daughter's original Katana was always excellent in this regard, and would ring sooner than my wife's old LG fusic.

From what I can see, the reception on the Eclipse is ok but not great.

Please see the other post I did a few minutes ago about the LEDs. Maybe yours does the same?

If you've had your phones for over 30days, then I agree with you, there's no turning back.

Please let me know how the battery life works out for you. So far the battery life on my wife's eclipse has been pretty good. So looking on the bright side, I'm not so sure this is a "bad" phone, just not a great phone.

One other thing. I know most people look at the fancy LEDs on the Eclipse as gimmicks to attract youngsters. But I think it might actually turn out to be sort of useful. We don't mind them so much.

Another feature is I set my phone to announce the caller or phone # when it rings via speaker. This saves me the trouble of digging my phone out of my pocket when I don't want to answer the call. One push of the volume rocker & it stops ringing. Very handy at work. The lights work great also at alerting you of the type of call.

Thanks GeezerB, good idea. The Eclipse is growing on us, mainly because of how my wife uses the phone. Battery life, good reception and having a common charger are the things she looks for, and this phone seems pretty good for this.

What's ironic is that when we first upgraded 2 of our 4 phones, it was the Lotus that my daugher loved, and the Eclipse we weren't so sure about.

Now it's the other way around. It's the Lotus' battery life that is the issue, and the Eclipse seems ok. I'm going to do a post on the Lotus in a few minutes. She loves it, but it drains too quickly, and we've turned off as many bells-n-whistles we can think of.

How do you turn this feature on?

Same problem here. If I'm out and about, the phone misses calls like crazy. Doesn't even ring. I've just resigned myself to it.

What some people do not realize is a phone is a type of radio and must have a good signal to receive the call. It is best not to put your phone in your pocket next to your body. The antenna is build into the phone and will sometime, in some areas not get a good signal.
Buy a $10 case and put it at least on your belt or on you purse so the phone can recieve the signal. If you know you have a weak signal put the phone on a desk, table or counter on the side or veritically, not flat. This helps in most area because the antennas on the towers are veritical polarized. Try it one time when you have a weak signal, it works. Good luck on getting your phones to ring.

Cancelled Sprint. Katana Eclipse + Portland area = horrible reception. I had constant dropped and missed calls. Sanyo does make a quality phone (even if it's buggy) if it's any consolation.

what i love about it is the navigation, and the option to crop and enlarge photos from the edit section in albums.
not too happy with reception as it lacks power.
having similar delay with calls not coming through amd only getting voicemail days to weeks later, this is a Sprint networking problem.
Love the leds for music player and equalizer when accessed fron memory card to play music.

Well, I have had my Eclipse for about 3 months now and I really like it. I liked my RAZR better with I was with AT&T, but the Katana is pretty cool. I have good reception and I like the multimedia features
