I am trying to get an .mp3 I have transferred to my phone to make it a ring tone. I can get it there but cannot get the phone to recognize the format. Does anyone know what format and how I can get the .mp3 converted to work with the phone? Thanks.

Here I hope this helps you I found it on another site. I had to do the same thing with my phone. But I used http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint to upload my mp3's and then send it to your phone via text and that should work. But you can read this also,It was posted on another forum so I hope it helps you...I know how frustrating this problem is... (http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint)
Hello,
I recently received my Katana Eclipse phone. I really love all the new features although I have a few questions that I can't seem to find the answers to anywhere. I already have thousands of mp3's on my computer so I really don't want to purchase them again from Sprint. I have placed mp3 audio files on my micro sd card, but the phone will not recognize these as valid ringtone formatted files - what format does this need to be in? (I have used a workaround by uploading my files to websites like myxer and resending those mp3's to my phone through the site and that works, but this seems like an unneccessary step). Is there a utility I could use to convert these mp3 files to the right format? Or does anyone have any suggestions on how this all works?

Thank you for the help. I do not have text messaging service so I think it costs about 10-20 cents. I would like to avoid that if possible and go the route you are seeking as well.

Oh I see. I have Text so I didn't think about that. Well without sending it via text using Rumkin or another Sprint uploader I don't know another way to do it. I know if you just try to transfer it to the memory card it will not recognize the format..But if you use Rumkin with the same formats to put it on your phone it works..I have no clue why

I just need to know the format of the file the phone recognizes. Then I can convert it and transfer it using Windows/Bluetooth from my computer. I already did this but the phone is not picking up the file. I am thinking the format it wrong. So basically to test further I need to know the format so I can get the proper file converter for .mp3 > ?

Right but what I was saying is that when I tried putting an Mp3 right onto my phone's microsd card my phone would not recognize it and say improper format. But when I sent that same Mp3 file to my phone using Rumkin it recognized the Mp3 file and let me set it as a ringtone. So I don't know if there is another format you would want to use besides Mp3. You could try .koz
Also here is a link to another post on this site that explains how to put ringtone's on your phone without using web downloads..Maby This will help.Good Luck http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=163421

Thanks for the info. Probably when texting/SMS to the phone it interprets and converts at the same time. Do you know if the .mp3 file sent is still accessible as an .mp3?

Update: I used MediaCoder http://www.soft29.com/convert_mp3_to_koz.html to convert the .mp3 file and then transferred it to my phone. I went to Sounds> Ringer Type> Incoming calls> Default Ringer> My Albums> and I do not see any file to choose from "In Phone" or "In microSD". It is in my microSD card and I even copied it to the phone. I can play it too.
Any ideas what I may be missing?

I have spent the last few weeks trying to get an audio file from my Windows PC to my ringer on the phone. I have converted the .mp3 file to various formats http://media-convert.com/ and none have worked. I do get it into the microSD card but the phone does not see it when going to change the ringer type. Why is capability even there? One would assume that's is how it is supposed to work. I called Sprint and spoke to an advanced tech and he admitted that it is a policy issue that manufacturers/music industry do not want this capability. :(

Sorry Long weekend. Sorry to hear that man. But I am positive it does not convert the mp3 when I sent it via text(Rumkin Doesn't Send Via SMS) The phone does not interpret anything and yes...After I send the Mp3 to my phone it works as a ringer and also the file format is MP3...Nothing changes. But you do have a point. My old Samsung from At&t would allow you to out anything you wanted on it as far as Mp3s went. But Sprint did put a stop to that for the most part. Because it confuses people so much how to do it that they give up. It isn't just the Music Industry its SPRINT!!!! Why would they make it easy to put your Music(MP3) That you have already paid for or collected or stole offline(Who cares) On "Your"Phone when they can charge you $1 a song..:thought:
And by the way....When you do pay that magical $1 for a song you must have through Sprint when it downloads as a completely different file(Not Mp3). So It will only work on you phones music player. If you go over to the MASS Storage Player and try to play the songs you downloaded from SPrint it will not recognize them because they are not Mp3.I Believe they are KOZ files.
Sorry again....Unless you find your loop hole your stuck with a useless Mp3 player.

After many calls to Sprint tech support I get the feeling it is Sprint that is hiding the fact that it is possible to do. They just do not want to allow people to have some thing for free when they can pay them. I do not listen to music but I do have personal audio files that I want to experiment with. I want to beat "THE MAN". I hate the fact "THE MAN" has control. This is just a personal battle for me to see if I can do it. I am 36 and in IT and of course only a geek would be so persistent :) I did get closer to my goal yesterday and i will definitely share here when I figure it out. :thought:

go here:
http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html
download and install it.
open the mp3 and crop the portion you want. should be about 25 seconds or so. do this by using the mouse and dragging the yellow lines on the sound graph.
then go to effects -> normalize. set it at 80% and press OK.
then go to effects -> high pass filter. set it at 160 hZ and press ok. this will remove bass which distorts all ****ty phone speakers.
then save it as a mpeg-4 file, or .m4a. choose average bitrate, and select 128kbps.
upload to your phone via whatever method you choose. if you are really going to be that cheap and not pay 10 cents to get a song you want, give me your address and I'll mail you a dime.

here is one way to crop. the more you do it, the more ways you will learn:
click on the sound graph and drag the slider to a spot where you want the ringer to play. click edit -> "trim start". now click again on the graph where you want the ringer to stop. it should be about 25 seconds later. click "trim stop." it will highlight everything outside of that area. press delete on the keyboard. there are numerous other ways to do this with this program. use and learn.

Have you tried emailing Dan (Sprint CEO) and asking him about all this? He says he's all about the 'new' Sprint, didn't he?

i have a katana eclipse x and getting custom ringtones on it took me awhile to figure out. they need to be in a .3g2 file. many converters convert to .3g2 but few work because they use the wrong codec. this is the process you have to use to put custom ringtones on your eclipse x. first make a movie about 30 sec long using windows movie maker which is already on your computer. just use a 30 sec mp3 file and a pic for this. next download http://www.daniusoft.com/video-to-3gp.html yes i know it says 3gp but it converts to 3g2 too, also there is a paid version but just download the trial. ok after you install daniusoft open it and drag your .wmv file into the program where it says "getting started". make sure where it says "convert to" you choose mobile phone video-3gpp (.3g2) . make sure your target path is set to an easy place for you to get your file, mine is set to my desktop. after the conversion is done just drag your .3g2 file onto your phones memory card. now just set it to your ringtone and your good to go, you now have a custom ringtone on your katana eclipse x!
HOPE THIS WORKS AS WELL FOR YOU AS IT DID FOR ME,
