I seems that every other major carrier everywhere is going with LTE for 4G...

Source: Engadget
We think the most exciting thing for us here at Engadget Mobile is not the fact that LTE's finally a standard, but the fact that it finally has a frickin' logo. Seriously, guys, why didn't you hire a couple nice kids with Illustrator experience about three years ago for this? Anyhow, yeah, LTE -- the standard most of the world is counting on to deliver 4G in the next few years -- has officially been rolled into 3GPP Release 8, which means manufacturers and carriers no longer have a moving target for creating compliant infrastructure and devices. Hey, WiMAX, we see those beads of sweat rolling down your forehead all the way from over here. Yeah. Not a good look for you.

WiMAX will have to damn good if it's going to compete...:Popcorn2:

I Think wimax will win because it is already being rolled out and lte is years away.

LTE is not years away, and as far as WiMax winning, I didn't know it was necessarily a competition. If it is, WiMax has already lost in respect to the fact that nearly every carrier on the planet has committed to LTE. Which in turn will mean manufactures will be more inclined to produce LTE capable device as opposed to the limited sales potential of WiMax.

Those are my thoughts... Once again, it looks like Sprint is making the wrong moves

Even Verizon is going with LTE! As a CDMA carrier, I would have called up verizon and tried to stirke up a limited partnership on 4G. If they could have done that that would have given this a chance to work!

For most of the world LTE is years away..

There are over 100+ countries around the world launching WiMAX NOW not next year not 2 years now..

LTE = Old Cellular World = Subsidized Devices
WiMAX = New World = UnSubsidized Devices more choices

The WiMAX community will be getting the cost of a wifi/WiMAX chip the same as a wifi, intern everyone would be putting those chips in everything..

You have to think LTE will not be anything different the GSM / CDMA , the fee's and the cost will Kill if from entering that arena.

WiMax and LTE are not all that different. Clearwire's (who has taken over Sprints XOHM) CEO Ben Wolff has already said, if the market embraces LTE, then we will move to LTE. There is not a competition as to which one will win. Both of these technologies have the capability to work together. Clearwire is taking measures so that if LTE ends up being what takes off instead of wimax, the financial impact to change to LTE will not be very high. Either way WiMax is already here, where is LTE?

WiMax and LTE are not all that different.

Hear, hear! (Or, "See, see!") Both are based on OFDM.
WiMax has the advantage that there are many smaller carriers worldwide
that already have non-mobile WiMax, and Intel already has dual-mode (non-mobile and mobile) WiMax chips out.

Therefore, the pre-existing roaming possibilities are already numerous.

wimax will blow everything away, no one even understands it potential...in 2 years Sprin t will be the #1 carrier...by MILLIONS

Lofty statement. :lmao: Sprint has to actually gain customers in order to become the #1 carrier.

Yeah, and thinking back on all the stupid moves that Sprint has made over the years... I can see this awsome service being fumbled like bettis in Indy :indiff:

hey, if every carrier worldwide, then why did South Korea just gave the go ahead to make the whole country wimax. I just read something on that yesterday. Let's not forget Australia and a few others.

I never said every carrier or every country.

Something is gonna work, maybe both will be successful. Why must it always be an "us vs them" thing with technology?

CDMA and TDMA have both lived together, GSM and CDMA, why can WI-MAX and LTE life together? Intel seems to be investing into WI-MAX, so it has support from the largest chip maker in the world

Just like I said "I didn't know it was necessarily a competition." Some people just have to feel they have the "best".

and WiMax will be on the Centrino 2 platform for laptops too when Intel finally brings it to the market

That's rich. :)

I was shopping laptops a few weeks ago, and noticed that you can already order ThinkPads from Lenovo that have WiMax built into them. That's a pretty strong "here and now" statement to me. WiMax definitely appears to have a pretty big jump on the market at this point.
