Sprint's Xohm fades away as Clearwire's Clear emerges
Barry West needs a new license plate.
Not just because West, the former top executive of Sprint Nextel’s WiMax unit, is moving from his East Coast enclave to the Seattle area. Another reason is that the “XOHM” on West’s old vanity license plate is the name of a now defunct brand.
Ben Wolff, chief executive officer of the new Clearwire, said this morning that the company will sell its high-speed wireless WiMax services under the brand "Clear."
“Clear was the best choice to represent the robust set of services that we will offer,” Wolff said on a conference call.
The Xohm brand Sprint created for its WiMax services is going away, but the WiMax venture clearly is moving ahead.
Clearwire and Sprint completed the deal to create a new WiMax company. Sprint spun off its WiMax unit and merged it with Clearwire.
The leadership team of the old Clearwire remains in place. They have been joined by West, who served as Sprint’s chief technology officer and XOHM business unit leader. He now is president and chief architect of Clearwire. Atish Gude, Sprint’s former vice president of XOHM mobile broadband operations, is senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Clearwire.
Wolff said the new company still is working out many details, and will announce later its plans to launch new services in new markets. But, more importantly, the new Clearwire already has worked out at least 3.2 billion critical details.
Clearwire has received a $3.2 billion investment from Comcast, Intel, Time Warner Cable, Google and Bright House Networks.
“As we roll out our network across the country, people will no longer have to make the choice between speed and mobility. We are bringing a new mobile Internet experience to customers at speeds previously relegated to fixed locations,” Wolf said in a statement. “With significant spectrum holdings yielding unmatched network capacity, a next-generation all-IP network, and an open Internet business model, Clearwire will deliver a simple value proposition aimed to improve productivity and make the Internet experience more enjoyable, wherever our customers happen to be.”
