Is WiMax intended for only mobile use or is it going to be a complete internet solution. I would love to be able to replace my cable internet with Xohm. To be able to have a WiMax equipped smartphone during the day and a WiMax equipped notebook at the house would be a great solution. But will they be able to handle users sucking down 200+GB's a month? An honest 5-6MB's downstream is plenty for me. This could be a very nice data solution depending on how it works out in the end.

Since there's a WiMax device to plug your ethernet into they also are marketing it to desktops.

I'm also tempted to replace my cable modem, whenever WiMax coverage begins in my area.

I replaced my cable modem with XOHM. The download speed is roughly the same (8mbit), but the XOHM upstream is huge increase, 4 to 6mbit!

While the mobile cards get roughly the same downstream as the router, the upstream is much worse (only 1-2mbit). I have a strong suspicion that this is power related. The router is rated at 22 watts!

The only downside so far is the router. It is very, very, very buggy. My connection dies several times a day due to a bugs in the router, not the WiMax coverage. My laptop has been able to stay connected for days at a time with either the express card or USB stick.

I should also add that the router had two phone jacks on it. XOHM does not offer VOIP services now, but the router's data sheet on ZyXel's website identifies VOIP as a supported feature.

After plugging in a Baltimore zip to get the pricing(why I didn't think of this before is beyond me) it looks very promising. Get the modem for the house and compatible phone for the road would be a very nice set-up. Even at the full price of $65 is not a bad deal at all.

as far as i can tell wimax is bring touted as the end all for internet access essentially its going to (hopefully) evolve into a service where you pay 1 fee and all your devices (phone, tv, pc/laptop, fridge(yes its been said), etc) will be able to access the web without wires

I’m working with XOHM and based on the products offered, I can tell you that it is indeed intended as a complete internet solution. For mobile usage, XOHM offers the USB plug and the ExpressCard, and there’s the XOHM modem for desktop, at-home computers. You could simply cancel or wait out your ISP and just pay for XOHM if you’re in the coverage areas.

Having done this, there are some downsides. My router is on the fritz (constant reboots) but XOHM won't advance ship a new one. So I have to be without internet for several days...

While I like the service, it's tempting to just call Comcast and return all of the XOHM stuff. :-(

The Xohm Zyxel Home modem is definitely in need of better firmware. Mine disconnects numerous times during the day when my USB Xohm modem works just fine all day long :)

This service is well worth every penny at $50 for life for the Pick 2 option.
