easy for them to say before its working Nationwide and without tons of people using it.

Might not be a cap, but you would have to think they would "have" to use throttling. I see them setting up pricing using a tiered system. The more money you spend the faster your internet will be, But then again who am i....thats just my two cents i still cant wait for XOHM to be live in Binghamton, NY :headbang2

on the whole throttling issue, via computerworld.com (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=networking_and_internet&articleId=9115905&taxonomyId=16&intsrc=kc_top):

...the acceptable use and network management policy for the Xohm service states: "To ensure a high-quality experience for its entire subscriber base, Xohm may use various tools and techniques designed to limit the bandwidth available for certain bandwidth-intensive applications or protocols, such as file sharing."

The speeds in Baltimore are currently top notch. One hour of playing around convinced me to drop Comcast ($25 vs $45, easy choice!). Downstream is in the ball park of 5-6mbit, and upstream 3-4 mbit. I just finished uploading pictures from my last vacation @ over 400K/s.

The customer service VERY friendly but a bit incompetent. They are still working out a number of kinks in the administrative system. While my Internet works, I had to order and activate the devices through the phone and still can not log in and view my account information.

Just checked out the XOHM website and it lists DFW as a near future market.

What are the benefits of XOHM over my current Sprint U727 USB Modem?

Is it really going to be that much faster?

At least the Modem is cheaper. Only $79 on the website. Now, how about the monthly charge?

It wont give me any info since the market isn't available yet. Will it be billed through my Sprint bill like my current modem, or is it billed on it's own?

Anyone know?

i'm not anywhere near a wimax market (yet), but here's what i gather from available info:

benefits over your current evdo rev. a modem would presumably be the higher speed and lower latency if you happen to be somewhere with good coverage. here's a pcmag link (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2331483,00.asp)to an early review.

as for the pricing, just put in a baltimore zip... i doubt they'll vary much if at all from one market to another. current promotional monthly price for an "on-the-go" subscription is $30, regular monthly after promotional period is $45. and you'll go through XOHM for activation, billing, and any other customer serivce, not sprint.

i hear there's a combo EVDO/WiMAX card coming out soon. surf on WiMAX when you have coverage, EVDO when you don't. and i don't recall the source but this option should be available directly from sprint.

Patience, once the sprint/clearwire "merger" is completed you will start to see wimax grow very rapidly. You can be sure that it will be at least Q2 2009 before you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Looks like sopasesos has the correct info on the pricing. I work with XOHM so I can help you answer the billing question.

Billing is directly through XOHM – you activate, manage, and pay all on XOHM.com. Payment is by credit card, and there is no credit check because you are not required to sign a long-term contract like most cellular providers.

Let me know if you have any more questions and I’ll be happy to help.

I'm interested in it too, at home, but plan on using it to stream movies from Netflix and don't want to be worried about caps and throttling. Does amand have an answer for that

Wirelessly posted (Palm Centro: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/Palm-D062; Blazer/4.5) 16;320x320)

From everything I've gathered, as I've looked into it a great deal since I'm in Baltimore, the service currently is not capped. However, this is expected IMO. It's brand new... I imagine once it has a larger footprint we will see caps. But that will probably be a while from now.

I have a friend in college who streams movies using WiMax now... I don't think he streams from Netflix but that shouldn't make much of a difference. He says it works beautifully.

For me, the biggest advantage to WiMax is (aside from the promotional price of $25/month, which I think is still going on) you don't sign any contract. Your service is month-to-month and you can cancel at any time without penalties. Shazam.
