Today Sprint officially launched its long-anticipated WiMax network in the city of Baltimore. WiMax is Sprint's next-generation wireless data network, and it will be used to supply wireless broadband services, which Sprint says can deliver speeds between 2 and 4 Mbps. Initial data plans available will not require annual contracts and Sprint will offer monthly passes for $25 and daily passes for $10. One Xohm account will cover multiple devices. There is a range of WiMax modems available for sale, starting at $60. Sprint said that laptops and other devices with WiMax built in will be available later this year. Sprint also said that it will launch a dual-mode EVDO / WiMax device that can use both networks later this year. Sprint plans to launch more cities over time.

Can't wait for it to arrive in the Chicago/Milwaukee area. Have they discussed the range that wimax would have from their base towers? At a reported $35 monthly fee, I wouldn't mind switching to Sprint for my internet services--currently paying $47 with Time Warner.

So is Clearwire also going to be doing it's own WiMax network or is it just going to be doing the same thing with Sprint?
Also why on Earth do they call it "Xohm". I mean if it's WiMax why not just stick with WiMax?
Also is this really a viable contender for LTE which both Verizon and AT&T are developing?
I mean from what I've read LTE will be significantly faster than WiMax so unless Sprint and it's allies can boost that speed up I don't see how it will compete.
I wonder how long it takes to expand considering Sprint still has many areas in 1xrtt and the Rev A expansion seems to have stalled.
Little bit off-topic:
Could someone please compare WiMax and LTE for Me?
I just moved back to Baltimore and I'm getting my XOHM card today. :D

Welcome back to Baltimo' :)
I'm getting a WiMax modem here eventually, as I'm a Mac user... Looking forward to testing it out.

WiMax & LTE are basically the same at this point. LTE will be faster, but it won't reach market until something like 2012. At which point WiMax will have had time to grab market foothold, expand and improve. So until LTE is actually available, there isn't much to compare at this point. They are both 4G networks. One is already available (WiMax) and one isn't (LTE). However, chances are LTE will be the larger network as more carriers will be using it than those using WiMax.

I live 20 miles outside Baltimore and I'm trying out the XOHM home modem in place of Comcast cable internet. So far, so good. $25/mo versus $60/mo with Comcast. It's a no brainer
