I have an old Sanyo 4900 that still has the Short Mail application. I actually -like- this feature. However, I should probably upgrade, and I'd like to get a Katana II. It's a Sanyo, it fits my current charger, and it's the best buy I can find. However, I am uncertain whether the Short Mail app can be run on the Katana II. Can anyone tell me for certain if it can run on the Katana II.

Note: I do -not- want to use SMS text messaging service. I -only- want to use Short Mail.

:thought:

i would have to say no; you will not be able to use shortmail on the Katana II. its set up to use SMS only. I'm pretty sure the shortmail only exists now at all is for legacy issues for phones that do not support true sms. i don't think sprint supports any way of porting shortmail for anything going forward.

That's a bit disconcerting. Though, considernig it is a web based application, that is run off of the Sprint network, wouldn't it concievably be a simple URL that might be saved as a favorite and accessed through that method? Then again, anyone who tried to message me on the phone would come in through SMS, wouldn't it? A shame.

Except for some gateways, I had thought that the Shortmail service had been shutdown... There *used* to be convergence between Shortmail and SMS in the form of the sprint.com messaging website, but that was disabled (a year ago?), when I guess Sprint got too many complaints from people that their spouses were able to read there secret SMSs online.

Does Shortmail really still work for *sending* from legacy phones ? (phones like the i500 can only receive Shortmails via the SMS gateway).

What is it about Shortmail that you want to retain ? Given that everyone else is doing SMS, you can only expect to send SMS-compatible messages anyways -- (a major diff between Shortmail and SMS is that Shortmail allowed 1000char textmsgs, but there is no point in that anymore). And most phones have email clients now and nearly all phones have email addresses, so... what is it that you want to do with Shortmail that you can't do with either SMS or phone-phone emails ?

The entire reason I was hoping to obtain access to Shortmail is for one reason alone. I pay for unlimited Internet on my current Sanyo 4900. Because Shortmail is a web based app, I don't have to pay the extra 15 bucks a month to send and receive text messages. All my messages go to all SMS compliant phones, and I receive from them equally without problems. So if I could get Shortmail to work on a newer phone, I could eliminate the need to pay 15 bucks a month extra on my bill (also extending my contact for two more years) and have a better more reliable phone. (Even though mine has not failed me.) See my point?

new shortmail users can still be provisioned i found out the other day, but this is all going away with the decommissioning of the sprint pcs email service. so, no sense in trying to reverse engineer it.

SprintUsers.com was created in January 2002 as a resource for users of Sprint PCS products and services to learn about and share information. We have cll phone reviews, Cellular Accessories, Downloads, PDA reviews, Ringtones, all of the latest Sprint PCS news and information, an area where you can find help in creating a ring tone or custom image for you phone, and so much more.
