Specifics: I have owned and used the 8100 for 5 weeks. I borrowed and used the 5300 for 3 weeks.
Bottom line and overall: I want/need a cell phone that receives calls clearly, grabs a signal and holds it tight. This is my paramount concern. In this vein, I'd give a slight edge to the 8100.
9* versus 8*.
G.U.I (User interface): Clear nod to the 8100 over the 5300. The 8100 has a very simple and fast user interface. The 5300 is slower to respond to input.
9* versus 7*
Form Factor: The 5300 is a *large* clamshell phone. At 3.70 inches in length, it's size was a distinct disadvantage. At 3.3 inches, the nod goes to the 8100.
9* versus 6*.
Camera quality: Hands down, the nod goes to the 5300. It takes larger and better quality images. That's not to be considered as saying the 8100 can't capture images quite nicely, it can, and it has terrific low lux image capture ability... but the 5300 is simply superior.
9* verus 7*
Flash equipped 5300 versus non flash 8100: While a flash equipped cam-phone sounds like a deciding issue, in reality, it is not. The 5300's flash is good for 2-3 feet. Yes, there is a way to increase the power flow to the flash, but it voids the 5300 warranty. and the results are not worth the hassle involved in doing so.
9* versus 8*
Voice Dialing: Dead heat... both perform very well.
9* - 9*
Voice Memo Abilities: Dead heat... both perform very well.
9* - 9*
LCD screen: The 5300 is larger, the 8100 is better. The nod goes to the 8100.
9* versus 7*/
Score : The 8100 receives a score of 60. The 5300 receives a score of 56.
Bottom Line: Both phones are great. Period.
If you are willing to carry a large clamshell phone, with a better picture capture capability, but a somewhat slower interface, the 5300 is your phone. If you wish a smaller form factor phone, better GUI, and better LCD screen brightness, the 8100 is for you.
