it works like a wireless bridge. from what i know with wimax it works as a repeater system. since wimax is designed to be mobile each BTS or base station has to be able to handle the handoff as well, so it needs plenty of BTS's to have the better coverage as well as the better speeds. as the technology comes out of its market testing you will see more info in regards to how it works.

dslreports (http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/Xohm-Baltimore-Launch-October-6-97821) has been "tipped" about Baltimore's WiMAX launch... supposedly going live on October 6, with coverage and pricing details coming to xohm.com (http://www.xohm.com/) on September 26.

Any sprintusers in the Baltimore market??

How about doing a Review. But post it in the General Section and we can put it up as a sticky.

As soon as it's available here in DFW, I may upgrade if it's worth it.

this 4gforums thread (http://4gforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=37167#37167) is discussing XOHM WiMAX sightings in places other than Baltimore including DFW area.
user Alex reports: i found it in downtown dallas, just north of downtown, and then much further north than i would have guessed -- north of LBJ/635 !

and for those interested, 4ginfo (http://www.4ginfo.com/wimax-news/75-not-in-baltimore-you-can-still-activate-your-wimax-modem.html) apparently has a work-around (http://www.4ginfo.com/wimax-news/75-not-in-baltimore-you-can-still-activate-your-wimax-modem.html) to register and start using a XOHM device in areas with coverage outside of the officially launched Baltimore area.

Hopefully it will hit Salt Lake City/Provo in the next year or so. We use Sprint EVDO for our MDT's at work, and it works okay, but more speed is always better.

I was at the Sprint Store the other day checking out the Treo 800 Touch Diamond. I was talking to the rep about the Touch Pro. I recall him saying the Touch Pro will support WiMax out of the box and that there will be a firmware update for the Diamond to give it support. I'm not sure how reliable this information is, but if there's any truth to it, that means that more handsets, especially WM devices, will be soon to follow.

I just ordered the home WiMax modem. I live in DC so I'll probably need the work around (hopefully it will come online officially around here soon). I'll post speeds and observations when it arrives, if I can get the workaround to work. I'm a little hesitant to put in the address of a police station but we'll see. I have some friends in Baltimore so I'll probably just ask one of them.

If it works well, I might pull the trigger on the Nokia N810. Does anyone have a non-WiMax N810? Is it worth it?

i highly dought that the pro will have wimax out of the box or ever. i'm 99% sure wimax needs spicific hardware in the phone to work. no phone on the US market yet has it. sorry buddy.

Any idea on actual pricing of either the device (i.e., with contract) or service?

I just ordered a WiMax USB dongle, but the EV-DO/WiMax dongle would be even better.

I have my doubts on how cheap the device and service will be. The current XOHM devices are clearly subsidized, and are targeting consumers. The U300 looks to be targeting bu$ine$$.

I really don't think ANY of Xohm's current products are subsidized at all...
Thats the entire point of WiMax..

I bet the card will be standard pricing as all there other cards...

I see sprint doing a 79.99 cdma/WiMAX plan and be Truly unlimited ...

I agree 100%, but, the current promotional pricing on the modems and cards seem to be lower than what I would expect. The current sales volume has to be roughly none. The modem is quite a piece of electronics to be selling in low quantities for $79. I am certain that in high volume we'll see these prices, and a profit will be made.

I am definitely a huge fan of the contract-free, no-hassle, Internet. I cancelled my Comcast service within 48-hours of XOHM.

HUGE WiMAX news

http://nationmultimedia.com/2008/10/16/technology/technology_30086244.php

Great news Intel is really backing WiMAX

Then, it plans to launch the next release of WiMAX technology - Mobile WiMAX Rel 1.5 (802.16e Rev2) - starting next year to 2010. The throughput of the network is expected to be 125 Mbps. The company will then release Mobile WiMAX Rel 2.0 (802.16m) to the market in 2010 and 2011. The connection speed is expected to be 300 Mbps and higher.

I’m working with XOHM, so I might be able to help you clarify the pricing. The XOHM $50/month option is a limited time offer, where you can get unlimited data service for two devices (modems, data cards, laptops) locked together at that price for life. The $35/month option is the monthly rate for home usage, while $45/month is the monthly rate for mobile usage. For a limited time, both home usage and mobile usage are offered right now at a reduced rate ($25 and $30 a month, respectively).

If you have any other questions, let me know.

With the $50 option, is there any option to switch out the devices? For example, if I had the home / USB but wanted to switch to USB / Nokia N810 could I keep the same pricing?

Also, any word on the DC launch? Oct., Nov., Dec.?

Yes, you are allowed to switch devices, but one device must always be a "home" device, which for now is only the Zyxel router, and the other must be a "mobile device" (USB, Express Card, Nokia N810, Laptop...).

those of you in DFW this work around wont allow you access to the service. You can see the signal but thats about it. Talk about a mean tease!!! Clearwire currently only allows traffic from bts to tower if it is registered on our system. As far as i know they arent doing any ORT in DFW yet. But im sure it will come. And to Astron, Denver is not one of our markets, i dont know if it will be sprint or clearwire though.

rilharri
10-19-2008, 03:02 PM
What do you think clearwires plans are?

Like getting rid of the old pre wimax towers and what not.

I say set up a COW, give everyone that connects to that tower a new WiMAX device ...

Then change out the old pre wimax panels on the tower to full WiMAX...

What do you think they will do?

yesitisrob
10-19-2008, 08:14 PM
Although I cant say exactly how everyone will be transitioned, it will be very systematic. As far as whether or not it will be new markets added first, or existing markets transitioned over... im not sure. I know clearwire is going to make every attempt to make wimax grow exponentially very quickly. So i guess i cant really answer your question. I know it will have to be a transition and not a "take down, put up" approach. If it happened like that we would have a lot of unhappy folks.

http://www.wimax.com/commentary/blog/blog-2008/november/WCAI-Conference-Keynote-from-Ben-Wolff-CEO-Clearwire-1118

Great info

Clearwire's challenges are just beginning. They plan to build 25K cell sites within the next few months with a total of 36K to 37K new sites by mid 2009. Ensuring interoperability and hardware/software integration are other challenges.

Sprint has about 67,000 towers so thats a huge amount for them to get to 25,000

rilharri
11-29-2008, 07:18 PM
My guess would be Power usage....

A home modem can use all the power it needs for the best signal and speed.

But mobile devices have to keep a balance of battery life and usability

FYI, WiMax speeds on an air-card are awesome ;)

I've had Xohm wimax here in Baltimore for about a month now. I've got the Zyxel coffee mug hooked up to a dlink di-624 (pos!) wireless router. On my desktop PC I usually pull 2 - 2.5 mbps download speed over the wireless network, and 1 - 1.7 upload speed. Although that speed is in the advertised range, I was a little disappointed that I wasn't getting the 4+ mbps or higher that I've seen a lot of others reporting. I am in Mount Vernon, smack dab in the middle of the city, so I'm not sure of my proximity to any towers. Nevertheless, it is faster than the Verizon DSL that I had before, so I can live with it until they start releasing antennas that will hopefully boost my signal (other than that $169 monster).

I have my Xbox 360 direct connected to the modem. The results are somewhat inconsistent. When streaming Netflix movies, it is kind of a crap shoot. I get anywhere from 1 to 4 bars of quality at any given time. If I get 4, it will only play for a few minutes before I get the "Your internet connection has slowed" rebuffer message. Anything less than 4 is usually pretty good. I did notice a bit of lag when playing COD4, but I haven't really done a lot of testing in that area.

So yep, I'm fairly happy with it in its infancy, but hopefully better signal and better firmware for the modem are in the near future.
