View Full Version : does Google Mail/Maps Mobile work on the Kitana DLX?

My trusty Samsung A900 is dead:
how to kill an A900: airplane mode + poweroff? (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166886)
Regardless whether I accidentally bricked it or it died due to a hardware problem, I now need a new phone.
The only freakin' Power Vision Samsung phone Sprint has is the Instinct, and I'm just now ready to drink that Kool-Aid yet. All I want is something as close as possible to my A900:
EVDO
flip/clamshell
web browser
supports Google Maps Mobile (the Java applet you download)
supports Google Mail Mobile (the Java applet you download)
The Kitana DLX looks like it's the best replacement.
BUT: i was fiddling around with the demo model in the store. When I went to download Google Maps Mobile (http://www.google.com/gmm/), I got the "sorry, your Sanyo blah-blah device is not compatible with Google Maps Mobile" error. That doesn't seem to jive with the posts in this forum, though.
For those of you who have a Kitana DLX: does it support the Google Mail Mobile and Google Maps Mobile applets? The latest versions?

Yep, it does; I've downloaded and used both. There's a weird issue with the Google mail app, though. The predictive text mode doesn't work correctly. It applies initial caps to all words. Changing typing modes doesn't help: you can't get it to do mixed case. It's very irritating. I end up typing in words without using predictive text.

You can change typing modes by pressing shift to change between ABC/T9w/123/SYM, and press 0 (zero) to change between T9w, T9W, and t9w.
As for Google Maps, I downloaded it on my DLX and it works fantastically! I have no problems at all.

Would you mind letting me know which source you were able to download it from? I get the same error as the OP.:frustrate

Yeah, I know how to do that, but it still gives me initial caps on T9w, which is the only option I get besides ABC, abc, 123, and SYM. Are you saying you don't get this issue on the Gmail app?

Still doesn't work for my phone. I was able to download the program file to my computer, but still can't get the phone to recognize it.

i can get to it that way but when i enter name of business and then directions, i then enter start address, but i i get a message that says the end address is not recognizable or something like that.
when i click on the business, the address is shown automatically and installs itself in the field so it is not user input error.
btw, is the app just for businesses?
i just clicked on google maps and received message that says does not work on my phone.
probably the reason why when i enter an address as described above, app does not work.
wonder why it works on some DLXs?
the DLX does have some quirks though. so that may be the reason the app works on some and not on over DLXs.

current PRL Available Is 60613.
i am on my third DLX due to previous issues. i have had this one for almost 4 months without issue. i do need a prl update but i can forget about that as some models are quirky regarding updates.
i had issues with my other 2 and so did my brother.
Btw, current software available is 1.010SP

Just spent 2 hours having Sprint techs updating the software and claiming that it still can't get google maps. They claim that only Sprint Nav or Tel Nav will work on the phone (Tel Nav is marginal on my wife's phone, dropping out of service at odd times), so I won't bother with those lousy pay services ever! Could Sprint be blocking my phone from getting Google downloads? If so, how do I find out and get the problem resolved?

You have the older software version of 1.002SP. that way be the reason it works for you.
for the other people who have DLXs and google maps work, what software version do you have?
the 1.010SP was supposed to correct the push email app issues which it did. maybe it was also issued to stop google maps from working and who knows what other apps.

Why would they issue a software update to intentionally make apps not work?
bikerich69
07-05-2008, 06:30 PM
maybe sprint wants you to purchase the GPS app in order for you to use the maps app and saw that there was a work around so purchasing the app. was not necessary. i dont know if that makes sense from an application/program/access point of view.

Sprint is pushing to have all 3rd party apps blocked, if I can believe the people working at the Sprint Store. They repeatedly told me that no 3rd party apps will work on the DLX.

I have 1.010SP with Google Maps, and it works fine. Also got gmail and opera. No problems here except for that text input issue that seems to only happen on 3rd party apps.

I am loading 3rd party apps on my dlx as we speak, and they are working fine. Telenav as a GPS app works great for me.
I'll try google maps when I have the time
EDIT: it didn't work for me either, I have 1.002SP, 60610 prl

Google Maps works fine on my DLX, 1.010SP, only thing that doesn't work is the "My Location" gps. I installed it several months ago, though, maybe Google's made some changes to Google Maps recently which make it incompatible with the DLX?
As far as other apps, I haven't had any problems with 3rd party apps Opera Mini, GMail, YMTiny, skyPOD, or Yahoo! GO. I don't think I could live without GoogleMaps, Opera Mini and GMail.

Has anybody figured out what is happening here? I erased my current version of google maps (which was working!) so I could download the latest and greatest and now I can't get the darn thing to re-install again :(
For those of you who have it working, what version of google maps do you have installed? If I know the working version number, I'll look to see if I can find the .jar file and send it via the uploader. Thanks!

This is a strange thing, my wife, sister, sister in-law, brother in-law (x2) and cousin all have the google mobile maps working on their phones. Then with a brand new DLX that is only a week old, wouldn't take it. I tried google.com/gmm, m.google.com/maps, and the sms, none of those options worked for me either, I got the same message 'google maps doesn't support the scp-8500' so I don't know what the issue is either. It does appear to only work on the older devices.

My DLX is from September of 2007 and I'm still running the original firmware, etc. As I've said before, it used to work... silly me uninstalled the old version before downloading the new version.

Did anyone ever figure out why some Sony DLX phones run Google Maps and others don't? I have one that doesn't run Google Maps, I get the message "Sorry, Google Maps does not work on your Sanyo SCP 8500". There must be a setup that needs to be set a certain way.
Any Ideas?

I just got the update notice the other day using Google Maps, and I chose not to do it at the time since I was in a hurry. Now I know not to do it, ever. I wonder if it's really no longer supported, or if it's just a glitch?
Google maps is a must-have for me. Who would pay upwards of $10 a month for mapping software? Seriously?

i just went to googlemaps.com from my DLX and this is what i just read:
The kmz upload feature Of my maps Is inoperable. We have located the cause of the problem and are working on a possible solution.
For now, unzip your kmz file before upload as a workaround.
Dated 8/20/08
i dont know if this is the problem related to the DLX issue.

My guess is that google themselves disabled the app because sprint had them do it either by legal threats of some kind or they just payed them. Mine works fine on both mine and my wife's phones that have different firmware versions. When hitting the upgrade button it takes me to the same error message you all see when installing.
THERE IS NO WAY I WILL UNINSTALL THE ONE I HAVE RIGHT NOW.

Google Maps worked exactly as I wanted on my MM9000.
The "new" version that I downloaded to my new VE20 doesn't give a search option, only directions from A to B. Grrrrr.
Why dump great functionality? I have to believe that cellphone companies wanting to charge us for nav capabilities had a hand in this change.

It behooves sprint to do this in order to make money. I thought I would be happy getting away from the smartphones and whatnot I have been using over the last few years but it sure doesn't feel that way. I am going to be going back to WM6 or something in the future. Android looks promising but I may wait until it has some degree of market penetration and maturity.
Once my existing install of google maps stops working, I will be much more motivated to get another phone. Other competing software (MGMAPS, AmazeGPS, etc) is MUCH slower. MGMAPS does support the GPS though which is nice.

I'm having the same problems with my Katana Eclipse...the apps just don't seem to be able to install. I also notice that there aren't many apps available in the app store that say they will work.
Anyways,
I was able to install Google Maps. It was listed as an app available for me to download directly from Sprint yesterday.
As far as installing Gmail goes, I had to send this link to my phone as a text. It basically tells Google that you're using a different model phone. Seems to work fine on my Eclipse:
http://m.google.com/a/MailByGoogle.jad?dc=gorganic&make=Generic&model=Advanced+MIDP2&ver=v1.5.0.1193
Hope that helps you out.

I don't have a link...but here's how I found it on my Eclipse:
Go to Apps on your phone
GET NEW
instead of browsing for this app....click SEARCH
type GOOGLE
For me, this brings up the option to install Google Maps.
Now, my Eclipse has not been working perfectly 100% of the time (Software lockups, phone requires reboot, bluetooth audio dies, ringer audio dies) but it does work.
Hope that helps!
