Has Sprint managed to require all their data phones to participate in this expensive monthly phone as modem plan?

If I reactivate my old Motorola or Sanyo 8100.. will I be able to use the #777 (2400) slow connection... or has the software been changed to block connection without the phone as modem plan.. like Sprint /Sanyo did with the Kantana II..???????
