I have come to a decision between the centro or the pearl

Centro:
I like the whole function, its nice and cheap, but i dont want like a dial up version of the evdo rev 0 when theres a rev a

Pearl:
Awesome, looks amazing, kinda expensive, and the bad side about it is the $40/mo which could be a little too much for me

Give me Alot of Info about the centro and how fast the internet is.

I'd go with the Centro. I have one (and haven't seen high school in many years.) EVDO rev 0 (if that's what I'm using) is nothing like dial up. Speeds are great! :headbang2

For a high school kid? Definitely a Centro.

I think it $30 a month thats what my store said. I'm switching from the Mogul to the Curve.

EV-DO Rev A is marginally slower than Rev 0, it is nothing like the jump from 1x RTT to EV-DO.

huh? is that a typo? rev a is faster uploads than rev 0...quite a jump

regardless, unless you need the push email you will probably be happier with the palm...better availability of multimedia programs and cheaper pre month

How much of that jump is one going to notice on a phone though?

true, but saying rev a is SLOWER than rev 0 is a false statement

My fiancee is in love with her Centro. She is not a tech junkie but does just fine with the Palm OS. The internet is pretty fast on the Centro. Especially switching from a non EVDO phone. There are thousands of 3rd party apps from the Centro also, making it easy to personalize the Centro with your style. With all smartphones, there's a learning curve if you're not used to the Palm OS.

Have you looked at the Mogul?

For a HS student, just get a nice flip phone

Whatever you do.. DONT GET THE MOGUL unless your really good with phones, computer and stuff like that. I have one now and it has alot of potential, but I don't know how to use. Thats why I ordered a BB 8330 its supposedly simpler and easier to use. So I guess one could say I am downgrading. Plus it cheaper on the Sprint website with a contract, but it costs more without one. lol

Thats just my 2cents. Everyone has their own opinion...

If this is your first smartphone, then you made a good decision. Personally I believe the Centro is a very stable phone. And the first 3rd party app you should get is NVBackup.

Well, what do you want to use it for? I used a Palm Treo 650/700p during my last few years of college and would use it to keep track my assignments and work/school schedule. Having data and GoogleMaps is also helpful when you're away from home but need to look something up...or you get lost.

If you want something that just looks cool/flash, get the Pearl. I personally like the 755, but you get pTunes Deluxe with the Centro, which is great if you use iTunes (it plays AAC files). Mainly, I like the 755 because, to me, the centro is a bit too small, and the 755 looks more professional.

Well i just found out that the pearl has a $30/mo so im really thinking about getting that too. Im just concerned about the suretype i mean i can learn it easy but im wondering if its gonna keep bothering me with certain types of words. Is the pearl's ui slow? because ive been hearing that its slow like loading webpages and sprint music.

I'm using a Curve. The UI is great and seems quicker than my old 700p. As far as loading webpages, sometimes it'll say it's requesting script, or something like that, but I think you can turn off scripts (whatever they are). I don't think the Treo supports them, so it's something like an added bonus, I guess. Regular websites load pretty quick.

As far as the typing, my dad has a Nextel BlackBerry with SureType and loves it. I think he turned off the "SureType" and just double clicks letters when he needs to use the 2nd letter on the key. I'm not sure if that's easier, but it works for him. My friend with a Pearl, that came from an A900 (I think??) has no problems with hers. She just says it's too high techy for her. It may be going up for sale on eBay in a few weeks, so if you can wait, you can get that. It'll probably be selling around $200-250, so, you may not want to pay that much.

Again, I'd have to ask what you're looking for. I honestly don't like the Calendar function on the Curve as much as I did on my Treo. You can't have different categories, and it just doesn't look as easy to use. I haven't used the Tasks yet, but again, I think it's just one category. I think it might change on the next OS upgrade, but that's undetermined as of now. If you're looking to get organized, I'd go with the Centro.

Well, the real answer to this question will surface once the phone is released and reviewed. However, I can say having owned a Centro for many months now, and having owned many Palm devices over the years, that if you want to be organized, you can't go wrong with Palm. They have many years of experience with it, and Palm OS was first a PDA OS, not a phone OS. The Instinct, to me, seems to be a phone first, with some simple PDA functionality slapped onto it to make it look more like one. But there is no real storage, for instance, on the Instinct, for contact support, and I don't believe it'll sync with Outlook, which is a deal-breaker for me.
